Just gotta add my two cents worth. I know this guy well. His technique is flawless and in the swimming world I classify him a power swimmer; however the defining feature of his stroke is his ability to streamline. You ought to see it from under water. He is more streamlined than Michael Phelps! Now, about the great swim, the greatest athletic feat I have ever witnessed and probably ever will; I was there for part of the beginning and witnessed the last few miles of the finish. That night at 2 am I awoke at home in a warm bed. It was cold and dark outside. I was thinking that poor guy is still at it, pouring his heart out. How can that be? It’s hard to even imagine what it would be like to be in the middle of that huge lake, cold, dark, lonely, and often rough trying to swim to various destination points that never seem to arrive. It would take a speed boat significant time at full throttle just to get from one bench mark to another much less the whole 42 miles across and back, and he’s doing it swimming! It was nothing but pure determination; utter no give in stubborn determination that got him through this feat. The mental tenacity is unmatched. I bow in awe. I’ll bet there aren’t ten people in the world that could do this - maybe only one - Maury McKinney. And love the finish, a little bit of gas in the engine and almost a sprint.

I've got to comment on this, but had to wait until no one would read it.
Swear this is true. Sitting on a dock Tuesday evening, visiting a friend, and looking at Barndoor and Rattlesnake islands.
Very nice evening; flat water; few boats.
And I'm thinking, "What a great time to swim across the lake." Three loons in view and they seemed at peace and it certainly seemed feasible.
Then I thought, "Wonder of anyone has ever been crazy enought to try it?"
So this thing, today, appears. The answer appears.
I've been dealing with this all day - there is good crazy and not so good crazy.
From now on we'll call the good crazy "damned determined."
Well sir, hope somebody feeds you one terrific meal and you get the damned determined award for 2009.
Respectfully submitted...
