John McCain yesterday said he will take Barack Obama's New Hampshire pledge not to raise taxes for anyone making less than $250,000.

"Not only that, I'm going to cut taxes for literally everybody," the Republican nominee said yesterday in a telephone interview from Washington, D.C.

McCain will appear at today's NASCAR race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon. His visit will follow Democratic nominee Barack Obama's two-day swing through the state.

The reason for all this attention by the campaigns is clear, McCain said.

"It's obvious that New Hampshire will be one of those battleground states," he said. "I think the polling data shows it's very close.

"And on my part, I've grown to love New Hampshire over the years."

Voters here, he said, "take their responsibility with the utmost seriousness. They're used to their first-in-the nation status, and they do examine the candidates, there's no doubt about it. They expect you to be there."

Asked about Obama's criticism of McCain's campaign ads, notably on taxes, as "dishonest," McCain replied, "Let's point out the fact that his ads were the first ones that were negative."

He cited ads by the Democratic National Committee, 527 groups and unions as evidence.

And he repeated his contention that "the tenor of this whole campaign would be different" had Obama agreed to town hall-style joint appearances.

Why? "Because we're two people on the same stage; the discourse becomes much more civil," McCain explained. "That's the experience we've had in New Hampshire, that's the experience we've had nationally."

So how does it feel to have been overshadowed over the past two weeks by his vice presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin?

"It feels wonderful," McCain said, chuckling. "I can't tell you how overjoyed I am to have her as a running mate."

McCain said he loves visiting New Hampshire, especially at this time of year. So any chance he'll make his summer White House here?

"The least I can do is go stay at (Mitt) Romney's place," he quipped. "I've heard it's a beautiful home."

YOUR COMMENTS

Jeff - Don't presume to put words in my mouth and I won't presume to put labels on you and your comments.
Who said anything about McCain being homeless? His wife was extremely wealthy when they were married. It's in the prenuptial agreement that people of extremely different financial backgrounds work out. The only home in his name is apparently the one they live in in Washington.

By cutting taxes, the economy is improved because people will spend more, thus stimulating the economy.

How hard is it to accept that McCain will cut taxes for everybody? He can and he will. Amen!
How long do you think it will take Obama to go over the Federal Budget line by line? Forever!

I don't care how many houses John McCain has. I care to have a president that will make the right calls on the war (as he did with the surge) and someone who will work with both parties to reach compromise and change things in Washington. I look at the record of John McCain and I see he's been doing that his whole career. I look at the record of Barack Obama and I don't see it. I see someone who never worked on any meaningful legislation, and never crossed party lines. Talking about change is one thing, making a change is a whole different story. I will be voting for John McCain.

Barack Obama's wrong call on the surge is very important to me. That was perhaps the most important decision that the president has made in the past few years. Barack Obama would have made the wrong decision.
His flip flopping on the most important issues is worry some, and then his inability to defend his views, pausing, agreeing and disagreeing are making me even more uncomfortable. He seems confused by his own statements. No wonder he doesn't want to agree to Town Hall meetings. Anytime followup questions are involved, he's incapable of defending his positions. My vote is MCCAIN/PALIN.

My family is currently paying over 36% per year in Fed Income Tax. That combined with SS tax and property tax is helping to pay for all the benefits illegal aliens are receiving. If we cut them off and made them pay taxes like the citizens of the U.S.A. are paying, we could all take tax cuts, pay for the war and money left over!!! It's time for illegal immigrants to pay their own way or get the boot! Any of them who brake the law should be sent home, no questions asked.

Guy - John McCain is homeless?

Talk about lip service... this is pure fluff from John McCain, no substance at all. How about him explaining how he intends on balancing the budget while reducing taxes for everyone. Will he dump the Department of Education? Cut the IRS?

The only thing missing is him saying "Read my lips"

Why would McCain want to lower taxes for everybody while we are still in a costly war in Iraq. Iraq costs the US 12 billion a month and we don't have the money. McCain should either be talking about how he will end the war in Iraq or should tell us how he plans to fund the war going forward. A tax cut at this point is ridiculous to talk about and will do nothing to help the economy in the long run.

The homes belong to McCain's wife. Look it up.
- Guy Plante, Manchester

Why would he stay at Romney's house? With only 50 states in the union, there is a decent chance that one of his forgotten homes he owns is here in NH!
