Dentist's protest stirs a tempest in a teapot
By DAN TUOHY AND MARK HAYWARD
New Hampshire Union Leader
Thursday, Apr. 2, 2009
Green tea mailed to the Manchester office of Rep. Carol Shea-Porter prompted the evacuation of the office yesterday. "Really, I didn't think it was a big deal," said Michael Yannetti of Pelham, who sent the tea.

cool. i thought about mailing in a tea bag myself, i think it was a great idea! mm is it too late for me to mail one? shouldn't be i would think. Yea i'm proud of all you that did mail one in.
- Doug, Bethany Okla.
Rosa Parks took a stand. Today people would blog and say 'She should have just gone to the back and sat down.' She wasted govt's time, and money being insolent and petty. It is never a waste when someone wants to rise above the status quo in a peaceful manner to demonstrate their abject disapproval. In this instance represented in the news media as a Tea Bag.
- Lucia, W.Wilton
"Libertarian"? If I recall correctly, Libertarians were against the war in Iraq. This man drove (for all I know, still drives) a car with a bumper sticker "Boycott France".
- JTMD, Merrimack, NH
Shirley, Nottingham - "intelligence" and Carol Shea-Porter in the same sentence is a non-sequitor.
Michael Haust, Barrington - you were had- Shea Porter does what Nancy and Harry tell her (and her sidekick Hodes) to do- the vote "against" was to ensure their re-election - even the UL fell for that one................
- sandy, thornton
Good idea, if you can't smoke it...mail it.
Our country is in good hands. Keep the riffraff out.
- JJ, Concord
Robert Stevens. Thomas Morris Jr. Jasper Curseen. Kathy Nygen. Ottilie Lundgron. Those are the five people who died in the 2001 anthrax mail attacks. Others were infected but survived. According to Wikipedia, two types of anthrax was mailed, one a white powder and one a brown granular substance. If I was a congressional staffer and I opened an envelope with an unknown substance, I certainly wouldn't sniff it like some people have suggested. Better to err on the side of caution than to risk death.
From reading most of these comments, one would think that these people did not die or that their deaths did not matter. Have a little humanity. Realize that mail terrorism is not only possible, but has happened in letters sent to Congress. People should feel free to exercise their 1st Amendment rights to free speech and protest government as long as they do so in a responsible manner. It was the dentist who made an error in judgment, not Shea-Porter's staff.
- Kerru, Londonderry
Let me call my local police and tell them I have a envolope of tea and I bet you they wouldnt even come to my house, These lawmakers need to be stoped NOW. I mean they dont listen to the people and they dont follow the laws of this country. Im soooooooo sick of lawmakers making up new laws. FOLLOW THE ONES WE HAVE. STAND UP AND TAKE THIS COUNTRY BACK..........
- Doug, Sarasota, FL
more libertarian nonsense....mailing any substance other than a letter is just idiotic and deserves a hard slap on the head...
- Lon, Baltimore
Pretty sad. It would be nice if they would use their energies to secure our borders. It seems the government is more interested in harassing law abiding citizens rather than go after criminals
- Beth, Alabama
Foul!!! We proudly lay claim to every whack job, lefty, nut case in the country! They must have escaped over the border....Send them back to MA.......Please!!!!!!
(Nice work Doc)
- Paul, Boston, MA
Now, if that had been a citizen, would there have been that much of a furor? Our duly elected deserve no more measure of protecton than the average Joe. Any protection that is not given every American should not be afforded any elected official, including the president
- Kadah, Spokane
More proof that liberalism is a mental disorder!
- Charlie, Manchester
SEND MORE TEA!
- Stan, Georgia
Let them eat cake? These politicians live in LALA land and are lucky this isn’t a hot war against the criminals in Washington and Wall Street. Wake up America this is financial terrorism and these people should be arrested and put in jail or a secret camp for terrorists in Cuba.
- Adam, Rochester NY
Of course they knew what was going on! This is nothing but a stunt to bring negative attention to the protest and I hope it backfires. Shea-Porter's office should be footing the bill for the waste of resoucres caused by their actions!
- Mike D, Weare, NH
Of course they new what was going on! This is nothing but a stunt to bring negative attention to the protest and I hope it backfires. Shea-Porter's office should be footing the bill for the waste of resoucres caused by their actions!
- Mike D, Weare, NH
Congresswoman Carol Shea-Porter's staff intelligently followed protocol.
How sad such precautions have to be taken.
How sad also are so many negative comments by people who don't have the facts straight.
It makes me think of the children's game of telephone- or worse -lemmings.
- Shirley, Nottingham
Chip in Wilton, not sure if you got my point or whether you were even agreeing with me with your comment. My point is that it was obviously NOT a terrorist, since the guy used a valid return address (for the slow: that means HIS OWN) and was contacted by police almost immediately using that address for a little Q&A, after which they left and didn't charge him, since this was obviously not a threat.
- Stephen A., Manchester
So, they quickly identified the substance as tea or tobacco yet, they were there for an hour and a half.
If that is there idea of quick so be it.
I guess Fox News had been reporting on this all last month and of all days to have be the day to do this they pick April Fools Day.
- Paul Scorpio, Providence, RI
Good job Doctor, unbelievably lame response by Porter and Staff. Also the reader's comment on how he liked the fact that she voted against the first stimulus bill, the reason Porter and Hodes voted against it was that it was risky to vote for it prior to the election, Pelosi gave them a "get out of free jail card" and they quickly signed up for the second one.... Hodes and Porter are koolaid drinkers and need to be voted out next time.
- chuck, amherst
Stephen, Manchester:
common sense has to be used here...
After all, how many terrorists put VALID RETURN ADDRESSES on explaining the substance rather clearly?
-
Boy I guess a terrorist wouldn't be smart enough to use a REAL!!! return address, even if it wasn't their own, right? genius
- Chip, Wilton
Great job, Doc! It amazes me that this politician and obviously several others serving the public in the "live free or die state" had no awareness of this "tea party". It has been well publicized for quite sometime and people from all across the nation are joining in and acting. I would think that the representatives from the state of NH, being in close proximity to Boston's original tea party certainly should have had some awareness. They must be under a rock most days.
- BLV, San Jose, CA
High dentist bills? Can't afford to get your teeth fixed?
Mail them to your dentist.
- Meg, Bedford
Police and fire all over a tea bag.... we get the hint send a dunkin donuts gift card next time. Good for you Doc.
- pete, deerfield
Frankly, the actions taken by Shea-Porter's office strike me as obviously political. In an effort to stop further protest of this nature, her office wasted taxpayer dollars to make people who don't like high taxes or high spending think that they could be labeled terrorists for sending tea in protest to their congresswoman. It is clear that the congresswoman wanted to scare the living daylights out of Michael Yannetti and make others like him who might want to participate in similar innocuous protest think twice. People who want to take government back to serve the interests of the people can not get scared off by political stunts like that. If anything, folks should be more angry and more willing to protest loose pursed congresswomen like Shea-Porter.
- Andrew J. Manuse, Derry, NH
I applaud Dr. Yanetti's actions very loudly. Fight the good fight! My only concern is for all of that delicious wasted tea... We must all band together and not allow this wasteful spending to to take place! April 15th @ Veteran's Park on Elm Street in Manchester. Show up sometime after 5pm to the NH outpost of the national tea party.
- Tea Party April 15 @ Veteran's Park, Manchester
It appears that a nerve has been struck here and the DNC now has it's interns responding and defending their esteemed Congresswoman.
- Wayne S, Manchester
I'll admit I voted for Carol Shea-Porter solely on the basis of her voting against the first bailout and sticking to her guns on it. As we've all seen, the bailouts are only making slick executives at failing businesses richer while doing nothing for the average taxpayer.
However, I find the level of awareness of national popular trends in politics by citizens to be pathetically poor. They should have known about this protesting for weeks. And why was her office the only one to call in police and fire?
Sending the police to Michael Yannetti's address over this is exactly the sort of behavior employed by the German Gestapo. Michael Yannetti showed far more restraint and responsibility than anyone in the local, state, and federal government over this incident. In fact, he showed more restaint than the original tea party perpetrators in that it was his money that bought the tea, he plainly labeled the envelope, and took personal responsibility by putthing his name and return address on the envelope.
Im willing to bet that if legal action is taken against this dentist that the next protest actions are going to be anonymous, cost a heck of a lot more to take care of, and possibly cause damage to public/governmental property. Government has a responsibility to not just protect the citizens, but to also protect the resources we've given them. Calling for maximum response for every nit-noid incident is piss poor resource management.
- Michael D. Houst, Barrington, NH
How out of touch is CSP's office that they dont realize this is apart of a national protest on this issue? Do they even hear the public's outcry over this spending!?
- Sam, Concord
Democrats. Reactionary to a "T"ea.
- JOHN, GOFFSTOWN
To those organizing the Tea Party, I would be interested in attending as long as the Free State Freaks don't show up and ruin it bellowing about 9/11 being a conspiracy or showing off their guns and maybe getting someone shot in a negligent discharge. They're some weird people and are a threat to public safety for anyone who has kids along.
Can you guarantee they'll be discouraged? Otherwise, I and probably a lot of other people as well really don't want to get involved.
- Adam Anders, Manchester
The UL and it's commenters are really reaching to make an issue of this. The doc's prank was cute and the UL obliged by providing the kind of coverage he would have been hoping for, but he used a thoughtless way to try to make a statement.
He sent loose tea, by the way, not a tea bag. And the return address is meaningless - the anthrax mailings had return addresses too. So it was entirely reasonable for the Capital Police to recommend the response they did.
The doc should find a more responsible way to voice his opinion rather than waste the taxpayers' money this way.
- Bill Duncan, New Castle
Is this an April Fools Joke? If not, then way to go Doc! Perhaps emailing a photo of a tea-bag is in order. Such a waste of resources!
As earlier stated, we have the right to protest our government!
See you all at the rally on April 15th.
- Suzannah, Austin TX (Ex Londonderry)
Hey, arch, of Salem, It was precisely that the Democrats regulated the banking and mortgage industry that got us into the mess we are in, and the fact that GWB did indeed keep the regulation in place, not to his credit.
The regulations I write of are the Barney Frank and Chris Dodd regualtions that forced FMae and FMac to accept high risk mortgages from people whom the banks knew had not the resources to ever pay the principle, never mind the interest. The Democrats forced the banks to make bad loans. (if you are a BDS sufferer I can't do anything for you)
The crisis is on the Democrats and now the Obamessia is using this crisis to destroy the USA capitalist system and install a government run system that never has worked and never will. Can you say Cuba? How about USSR?
- Dean, Londonderry
3 out of 4 Congressional Delegation members prefer reading the envelope and knowing its contents before calling the police. Congresswoman Hyphen and her collective cast of cretinous clod are so out-of-touch that they probably think The West Wing was renewed for a 12th season. Does she even know that her district office is located in Manchester? Cindy Sheehan-lite has shown what a neophyte she is and I look forward to her return protesting Seabrook in 2010.
- Maurice Forcier, Manchester
In 2001 anthrax was sent to Democratic Senators. Five people were killed, and 17 were infected.
Dr. Yannetti sent loose tea through the mail, to a Congresswoman. The office staff had no way of knowing what the substance was, or what it may have been treated with. They acted appropriately in calling the police.
Dr. Yannetti chose to follow the instructions he received in an email. In doing so, he wasted the time of the Manchester Police Dept. and a bunch of taxpayer dollars.
Readers of the UL are placing blame incorrectly.
- Dave, Brookfield
People who applaud this guys actions are ridiculous. Sending a substance to a sitting congresswomans office, in todays day and age is just dumb. Ok, so after the fact it was found to be tea but to actually send it in the mail is just a stupid thing to do. There are other ways of getting your point across. Sending a substance in an envelope is not one of them.
- Mike, Manchester
What was her staff thinking???
That is the point. They were thinking. How often do you get a substance - any substance - in an envelope? Shea-Porter's staff did the right thing by calling the Capitol Police (who have jurisdiction over the safety of members of Congress). They are the ones who advised her staffers to call the local authorities.
It is too easy for all of you to sit there at your computers and criticize her for this. If it were me opening an envelope and find a foreign substance, I would be shocked & frightened and probably do the same thing - maybe worse, who knows.
The brilliance of sending a tea bag in an envelope - after being warned not to by the people orchestrating the whole event - is mind boggling. If any of you have this man as your dentist, I encourage you to think twice about showing up to your next appointment. He doesn't have much going on up there.
- Matt, Lee
Not that this was blown a little out of proportion, but the government bashing is way out of line. We elect our government officials (local to national) in this country and need to live with those decisions. Don't like it, run for office and do something constructive or quit complaining!
"All I hear is blah, blah, blah, our government stinks." Get off your computers and run for office. Maybe some real life experience would do you good.
- Bill, Candia
Apparently people here are suffering from a form of collective amnesia, and have completely forgotten the anthrax that was sent to legislators through the mail back in 2001. A couple of people died as a result.
Contrary to the "wisdom" being spread here, the material that was sent to the Congresswoman's office was not a teabag, it was loose tea. The Congresswoman's staff acted appropriately, in calling the police to deal with an unidentified substance in the mail.
Instead of blaming Congresswoman Shea-Porter, you all might do well to blame the buffoon who sent loose tea through the mail, and created a situation that wasted our tax dollars, and wasted the time of the Manchester police. This guy is no folk hero - he's an idiot.
- Susan Bruce, Jackson
All the braggadocio about how brave you would have been receiving an unknown substance in the mail. It would never occur to a terrorist to write on the package that this is just tea now would it. If on some days you think that conspircists used demolition charges to bring down the trade center, and on other days think they should all be tortured to reveal the truth I would appreciate it if you would sniff all the envelopes you receive, in your cars, with the seat belts off and no helmets on. Come on all you big brave libertarians, time to put up.
- William, Deerfield
Many thanks to the Dentist.
But this is really sad, and I hope and pray she gets the message of how many people are not happy with how she is representing our state.
But we must speak in the voting box when she is up for re-election.
- Dan, Amherst
In defence of everyone involved. The TEA THING is a mainstream thing. People are sending tea bags to US house reps.
Also though, recently the main stream is asking that people just send the threat and the thing that shows its a tea bag not the actual tea bag because the state department is just throwing them out for fear of some sort of substance.
- Shawn, Manchester
...and society is once again saved from an evil green plant. what would we do without the hero's in blue "protecting us"?
- Mark, Milford
I also sent a protest letter regarding the bankruptcy-causing spending spree, but I sent only the tag from my Lipton tea. I knew that the tea itself wouldn't make it through security. However, with the Dimocrats marching in lockstep with der Fuhreur as he takes the country over the cliff, I'm not hopeful that citizen protests will have any effect. One can only try - - and vote these buffoons out of office. If we are allowed to vote next year.
- PJ, Washington
Since the national tea party website whose link is attached to this story is currently down, I thought NH taxpayers would want the link to the NH tea party information:
www.thenhadvantage.com
There is also a link to register to come to the tea party. Anyone can use the link or email nhteaparty@comcast.net to do so.
Let's participate in something on tax day that would make our founding fathers proud. I hope to see you there!
- Hiedi, Manchester, NH
Finally, a dentist I would not be afraid to go to. It is great to know an educated man like yourself is aware at how bad the downward spiral of America is. We all better stand up before we fall down, because we are not being told half of what is going on behind the scenes. We have been taken over, and we have got to rise. Great job sir, as a former military veteran, I thank you for your service whether it be civilian or military.
- Tim, Cleveland/Ohio
So what are the chance that calling the police was a political ploy to make those not on the Democratic train look bad... "look - a conservative protesting against a Democrat by sending a 'substance' in an envelope! Those conservatives must be evil and hateful!"
- Mike, Manchester
The over-riding issue that's being missed or ignored here is the fact that right wing protest of the efforts of the current administration to correct the economic downturn are completely misguided. We're desperately attempting to sort out a deficit spawned by the Bush administration and economic collapse sped along by Republican repeal of regulation.
If Americans had an attention span that exceeded the past 10 minutes, we might understand that unprecedented measures are required to address unprecedented economic failure. Spending now is the best strategy of economists who are much smarter than I am, (and I'm guessing that's the case with many posting these responses) to avert a collapse of our way of life. Like there are no atheists in a foxhole, there should be no Republicans or Democrats in a bread line.
- arch, Salem
Next time send the MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheet) along with the substance. Do they make an MSDS for Green tea? Anyway, we must all be good citizens and comply with OSHA (Occupational Safety & Health Administration) to avoid future confusion and mayhem. Also, I think the story is just plain funny.
- Marc, Mason
mr. yannetti, you're a great man. thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to help out the cause! 2010 can't get here quick enough.
- fpc, manchester
It's not uncommon for government thugs to treat criticism as a threat and use force and/or intimidation by agents of the state to suppress anyone who would dare speak out against government actions. I have witnessed it first hand and have read many accounts of this kind of activity. I've stopped writing letters to the editor and usually don't use my full name in comments like this because of the severe persecution and false accusations that I've suffered at the hands of government thugs since I confronted certain government thugs for repeated blatant oppressive violations of the law and publicly renounced their unlawful activities. I'm a peaceful man who tries to always do what's right. It's hard for me to turn a blind eye to unlawful oppression by people who should be upholding the law, but it seems that when I complain to higher levels in government, nothing happens to the government thug who was breaking the law, and I get more unwanted attention from the person I filed the complaint against and those who report to him.
Calling the police over tea that accompanies criticism appears to be just another unreasonable use of police to suppress criticism. They will continue to try to label their critics as criminals or possible terrorists in their quest to maintain control over the people.
- Tim, Somersworth
While mailing a substance in the post-9/11 world is kind of a dumb idea, common sense has to be used here. After all, how many terrorists put VALID RETURN ADDRESSES on their 'threatening' letters, not to mention the words "Tea Protest" explaining the substance rather clearly?
- Stephen, Manchester
This really speaks to the intelligence level of her employees.
- Phil Hubbard, Northfield, NH
Those damn Capitol police. How dare they instruct the staffers to call the local police?
- DM, Hampton
If Shea-Porter's staffers have a perception problem (which they obviously do) and interpret a clearly labeled "tea protest" envelope as an imminent threat - then the article should be focusing on their complete lack of judgment. Shea-Porter owes this guy an apology for the fact that he even had to deal with police showing up at his door. How much did this overreaction cost the taxpayers? When hikers get lost in the woods, don't we have a policy that they can be charged for the time spent looking for them? The law enforcement officials involved with this incident should send Carol Shea-Porter a bill for their time.
- James, Wilton, NH
Thank you Carol Shea-Porter for wasting even more taxpayer dollars! With your demonstrated overreaction, I'll send you the label from the Lipton instead of the nice organic green tea in a sealed bag from Costco.
As for the complaints about "where were you when the R's...": If your wife spends too much money on shoes, do you go out and spend too much money on power tools? (Ladies, reverse and answer.) Does that make sense? Just like a household, we need to be prudent with our money and not spend money just to spite the other side.
We're quickly reaching the point where complaining about what this spending will do to our children will be moot. We're headed towards a devaluation of the dollar thanks to overborrowing, particularly from China who wants to do away with the dollar. Their only incentive for maintaining the dollar is to maintain their investment in our borrowings, and that can change quickly.
Let's cut back on the spending before dollars are cheaper than toilet paper.
- Erica, Derry
Apparently, the right to petition your government for redress of grievances as guaranteed by the Constitution is alien to the congresswoman. Perhaps she should read the document she holds in such comtempt, and that she took an oath to protect and defend. Funny how Democrats will spend a great deal of time and money defending the "rights" of a hardened criminal or agitator who publicly burns the American flag, but can't find a single right that applies to the average law-abiding, taxpaying, hard working citizen. Folks, remember this curious trait the next time you go to the polls.
- MO, DERRY
Wouldn't surprise me to see him charged under some "Terrorist" law or maybe "false public alarm". It would cost him $50,000 in legal expenses and convince the sheeple to keep their mouths shut.
- eddie, Hooksett
Join us on April 15th @ 5:30, Victory Park Manchester NH for a Taxpayer Tea Party to protest the out of control spending and taxes on all levels of Government. Please rsvp @ nhteaparty@comcast.net
- Michael Biundo, Manchester
Don't the politicians read the news? Smell the stuff. It's labeled tea, it smells like tea, it must be tea.
What good is the protest if the politicians can't figure it out.
- Bil, Dunbarton
Ahhh, Jim from Raymond, the Repubs were voted out of office by those who voted them in. Voted out by not voting at all.
I only hope you marxists sheep keep following the exalted one over the cliff.
Baaaaa Baaaaaa
- Michael, Manchester
Good job Manchester Police department, we are save from the chemical and biological danger of the "TEA BAG" maybe MPD could now focus some of that energy and enthusiasm in shutting down the crack houses and drug dealers in the City.
Concord and Newport just did a major drug bust and all we get from MPD is routine traffic stops tickets, driving while intoxicated and other less severe crimes.
Manchester Police department step up to the plate and focus on crack houses and drug dealers in the City.
- JD Willians, Manchester
First thought that came to my mind when reading this was "are you kidding me? what a complete moron who completely wasted our tax dollars because of an over infalted sense of self." No one that I know of cares enough to send her a package of bio toxin, but you can bet people will be out in droves to vote her out when the time comes.
- Theresa, Dover
Typical response from the idiots in DC. Oh, maybe, after weeks of seeing this in the news, you had no idea it was going to happen. Tell me you were completely shocked to receive a tea bag in the mail. Goes to show how out of touch you are. Tax and Spend Demoncrat, that's all she is and she's lockstep in with the biggest spender of all. Try to tell me this is a stimulus bill when its nothing but spend and control.
- Romeo Danais, Nottingham
A Dentist did this? And his clients allow his hands in their mouths?
What's this world coming to?
- Dee Crown, Manchester
Thank God for the Manchester PD that put their lives on the line AGAIN for NH Democrats who repeal capital punishment for cop killers. This could have be really dangerous if Shea-Porter & Co. had started smoking it at their union cider circles! What's that address again?
- Mae, Plaistow
I like this. Shea-Porter's asinine response is both amusing and chilling.
I encourage Shea-Porter to become more in touch with her constituents.
- Tom, Campton
This guy should have done the intelligent thing and sent the label from the tea bag, such as the Salada tea label on the string or the Bigelow package if sealed. There have been warnings all over the news reminding protestors NOT to send the entire tea bag, for this reason. For a doctor, he's not too bright. Hence, he became a dentist.
- Tom Donovan, Hooksett
Congresswoman Carol Calls Cops on Constituent - Again. This reminds me of when CSP called the police on a constituent from Lee in her first year in office, a man well-known in political circles for his rambling rants. Everyone else just hits delete. CSP calls the cops. No wonder so many people in NH and DC think she's a bit unbalanced.
Fergus Cullen, ferguscullen@aol.com
- Fergus Cullen, Wolfeboro
Yes, lets waste police and fire resources over felony tea sending! Way to go rep offices...
- Ian, Wakefield
It is a shame that a harmless act of protest is treated as a terrorist threat, but what kind of idiot does what they are told in a chain letter sent through email. It is people like this that are keeping spammers and nigerian 419 scammers is business, keep up the good work. Oh yeah, and if you forward this to 20 of your friends you will have good luck tomorrow.
- AC, Manch
With all the talk of revolution out there, even by fellow congresswomen, I guess I can understand their reaction to the "tea". I'm sure that office receives some pretty crazy things in the mail.
It wasn't that long ago when another politician got some seemingly harmless white powder (Anthrax) in the mail from an angry citizen. Also remember the crazy guy in a certain presidential candidate's Rochester office? There is a danger in working in any political office like that. The threat COULD be real...remember the killing at that Arkansas political office? I guess I wouldn't take any chances either.
With that said, I don't think what the gentleman did was wrong and shouldn't be punished for it. Just chalk it up to unfortunate miscommunication.
- Breyer S., Manchester, NH
"Really, I didn't think it was a big deal,"
And this genius has a medical degree.
- Tracy P, Fremont, NH
This is awesome. We all knew this woman was as sharp as oatmeal but figured at least she'd have some staffers with gray matter. We were proven wrong.
- Wayne S, Manchester
Kudos to the dentist! It's like pulling teeth with these Democrats. They just don't get it.
- Brian, Litchfield, NH
Good For You--Doc.
We need to use every way we can to get their attention. Our less than honorable reps need to be reminded that they represent the people of NH and are supposed to work in our interest. So far their interests lie with a far-left extremist from San Francisco and the idealogy of MoveOn.org. It 's easily revealed in their talking points and their voting records.
Sen. Gregg is absolutely right. They are hell-bent on bankrupting the country and ruining the American dream for our grandchildren. We need to take our country back. Socialism has always failed --what can they be thinking? They owe too much to special interests that continue to bankroll their campaigns, and will sabotage those who cross them (ala Joe Lieberman in Conn.) That's wrong! We the voters can sabotage them, too.Term limits for these people make sense and it's up to us, the voters to limit the terms of those that aren't representing us. It's gratifying to see the 'sleeping giant" awakening all over the country. Keep the tea bags coming. If only to annoy them, and hopefully wake them up.
- Len, Atkinson
I cannot believe that these fools actually called the police over tea. What a bunch of immature fools. Wasting resources and time, when they should actually be spending their efforts thinking about what the people they represent want. This illustrates that politicians now see polls as something to over come rather than an indicator of what they should be doing. I'm sure that the dentist will now be on some list somewhere.
- mark, hooksett
And she was the only one to be scared? I wonder why? Maybe she realizes that the public feels she is doing a REALLY bad job and fears for her safety.
Way to go doc- you made your point and now got free advertising!
- Pauline, Franklin
I agree completely, AMC. In fact, I think the STAFF should be answering to the authorities.... this was CLEARLY a non-threatening situation (he LABELED it "tea" for g's sake) that they turned into an opportunity to "send a message" and try to scare this guy.... To me, it's no different than placing an inappropriate call to 911.
Shea-Porter...How's that Rep gig looking? One-and-done?
- Jay B., Manchester, NH
Next time send them USDA certified 100% organic green tea.
- Dmitry, Ossipee
Interesting that Representative Shea-Porter and her office staffers are unaware of the tea protest that is emerging across the country, including her own district. It shows how out of touch she is with what is happening.
- Nicholl, Manchester
I wonder if these are the same people who demonstrated against the billions of dollars spent in Iraq and Afganistan over the past six years.
- JG, Goffstown
Shea-Porter. Ridiculous!!! What was your staff thinking? The dentist sent along some good weed for your enjoyment and put his name/return address on the envelope? Obviously, your staff has no common sense. You are what you eat or in this case, smoke!!!
- William, Hollis
Maybe we can start arresting everybody who does not agree with the government.
- Malaise, Dublin
So why didn’t the good doctor send tea to Sununu, Gregg, and Bradley over the last eight years? I know, I know, 11 trillion missing from the treasury and 11 trillion missing from our 401Ks, retirement, and pensions is no big deal if a Republican is in charge. Did you think the debt was not going to come due? Did you think Bush was using magic Leprechaun money that never had to be repaid? Smell that? It’s the pungent odor of blatant hypocrisy.
I know the Democrats were in charge of congress for the past two years with a one-vote margin in the house and a dead lock in the Senate therefore it’s all the Democrats fault. The six years prior never happened and the slim vote margin means nothing.
The good doctor sent this tea because he was told to by Rush and Faux News and being totally void of independent thought he was more than happy to comply.
- Jim, Raymond NH
Carol Shea-Porter just called, said the tea bag arrival has gotten her attention. She will now abandon the policies that got her elected, abandon supporting President Obama despite polls overwhelmingly in his favor.
She stated "If it was not for that tea I would never have embraced the idea of abandoning my principals and beliefs I've held all of my adult life" Thank you Mr. Tea Bag sender(for a complete waste of a perfectly good tea bag), this Buds for you.
- Kevin, Derry NH
What I noticed was the fact that he sent the same thing to the other three members of Congress yet none of the others had this reaction. She thanked the offiicals for their swift attention ? To what? Green tea? Just another example of your tax dollars at work for frivolous wasteful things. Good job Doc and a great message from us here in Pelham!!
- Bill B., Pelham
It has been eight years since the Anthrax scare. The white milled Bio weapon was created in a special lab by a highly skilled individual. How could anybody mistake green tea for a known bio weapon that hasn't been used in 7 and a half years.
I don't know how effective these tea parties are going to be with such a partisan as Shea Porter. Carol Shea Porter and her "dimwitted" staff would write off these protests as "right wing" lunacy. I think sending the money you would spend on tea to the NRCC would be more effective in the long run.
- Chris, Merrimack
Carol Shea-Porter is an embarrassment to NH. This has been on the news for weeks!!! Just how out of touch is she with reality??? He wrote "tea protest" on the outside package!!! Come on Shea-Porter...get a clue! I'd send you a quarter so that you could buy one, but can't after you decided to raise all our taxes buy endorsing that ridiculous tax and spend stimulus package!
Oh and I doubt Carol Shea-Porter was even there...she's never there! I've worked in that same building for the last 2 years and have yet to see her there.
- Mike, Epping
I too am very suspicious of tea. Don't even get me started about coffee.
- JB, NB, NH
While I sympathise with the Doctor, and agree that Shea-Porter is representing not NH but her party, mailing any substance in protest in this day and age is foolish. How many stories do we read about an "unknown substance" being mailed? True it usually is harmless but the alarm it casues is a furthur waste of tax payer money. If you want to tea party, send a cover from the tea box. True, Shea-Porter and staff will still ignore you, or twist the protest to somehow "prove" the people support her but it is less likey to draw law enforcement to your door.
- jeff, Goffstown
What a wonderful story shory how Shea-Porter's people have such a high sense of self importance to think someone might might actually break the law at her expense. Maybe the tea wasn't decaf. Doesn't the good doctor understand that they'd only be accepting Starbucks tea? Shea-Porter -two face should be censured then resign for showing what dopes she surrounds herself with and overreacting by wasting police time.
- jerry LaCorte, derry
They're a crack congressional staff, they are. I'm sure the congresswoman sleeps very well at night knowing they are alert and ready for any contingency.
- Mark, Manchester
The only way for government to sustain and maintain socialism, is by oppression and sheer use of force.
Dr. Yanetti sent tea to Carol Shea-Porter and other members of Congress as one of many who protest the bailouts.
In response, First responders of Police and Fire showed up...over a bag of green Tea! Then the police were sent to the door of Dr. Yanetti.
Dr. Yanetti's sending of tea, a mere harmless symbolic gesture done by many many people, was met with a police response. "Tea" looks like "Tea" and smells like "Tea".
Some might argue that my reasoning borders on paranoia or whackiness. However, let me end with this question: How many citizens will think twice before making their protest or opposition known to the members of their government if the net result will be police knocking at their doors?
- Rick Olson, Manchester
A prime example of how our Democratic leaders deal with issues. What's going to happen when we really have a problem? Don't blame me, I voted for the other guy :)
P.S. Great job Mr. Yannetti. I hope to see you on the 15th in Manchester.
- Roy, Manchester
The New Hampshire Tea Party is going to be held at Victory Park in Manchester at 5:30pm on April 15th. come join us and bring some tea.
- Matt M, Hampstead
This is a good example of how out of touch Liberal Democrats are with the citizens of NH. They knew "nothing" about the Tea Parties. 2010 here we come.
- Cynthia Martin, Peterborough, NH
Hooray for you, Doc! Sometimes you need to use a 2 x 4 to people in government's attention.
- Gary M, Monroe
What a joke Shea-Porter and her staff are, they waste personnel, resources and money because they probably where inundated with tea bags and wanted to send a message on taxpayer’s dime, “voice your opinion and we will retaliate” nice......or they are overly caffeinated zombies that have never seen a tea bag before.
- AMC, Troy, NH
Looks like someone is going to be getting quite a bit of tea bags in the coming year.
How important we think we are.
- Michael Pishnuck, Manchester
Two-thumbs up Doc. I wonder if our elected public servants are starting to hear their employers. Most Americans are patient.
But the seeds of desperation and fear have been planted and are taking root due to the economic environment that these two parties have led this nation into.
I wholeheartedly support a peaceful way to get the attention of these self-
serving deleteds.
- Michael, Manchester
Idiots .This demonstrates the stupidity of government on many levels
