Did Souter cry over 2000 recount vote?
By JOHN DISTASO
Senior Political Reporter
Wednesday, Sep. 5, 2007
Did U.S. Supreme Court Justice David Souter of Weare weep and consider resigning after being on the losing side of the historic 2000 split decision that ended the Florida recount and effectively installed George W. Bush as President?

I am so tired of hearing how Gore lost in 2000. All I can say is if he had won his home State of Tennessee he would be President. Florida would be a non issue. Did the Volunteers know something?
- Ric, Manchester
Whether he did or didn't cry, the story is certainly believable. If nothing else (and regardless of his ideology), Dave Souter is certainly among the most effeminate appointments to the court in a long time. Breaking down in sobs over a decision that rendered his candidate a loser would certainly be a reation that fits into his known demeanor.
- Betsy, Franklin NH
I cry every time I see his house. How much does a supreme court justice make? You'd think he could get it painted or mow the lawn.
- Bob, Weare
I believe Jeff Toobin. I am not sure how you would know whether Souter cried.
- Richard E. Thompson, Silver Spring, Maryland
Who cares??
- Joe, Manchester
Chuck, Identifying does nothing if you will not do anything about it, I identified that the my Dog pooped on my lawn but hey I let you step in it. I saw it but I did not want to do anything about. Sorry now you deal with the mess.
- JL, Manchester
Souter is a careful and thoughtful thinker, and understands the separation of powers and CHECKS & BALANCES, which is why these neocon ratfinks dislike him so much. As a native of NH we ought to be proud no matter what his politics are, but there are always the uncivil bigmouths rallying around the old rightwing UL spewing negatives. You guys have run this country to ruin, you really ought to face the reality of your lack of success and take a step back.
- Wallace Miller, Nashua
JL in Manchester, I'm glad you jumped in and blamed Clinton. Somebody had to do it. Even though Clinton's security team identified al Qaeda as the #1 threat and Iraq the #9 threat your commander in chief ignored the warnings about 9/11 and then went after Iraq. I bet you believe the surge is working. Maybe Souter was smart enough to see that bad things come from a rigged election!
- Chuck, Conway
Mr. Ripley of Manchester, you have said it best. It would appear that many people were fooled about what Mr. Souter really was. Our pride turned to embarrassment as soon as he started making decisions from that high bench. And it continues to this day. Kelo has to be the most damaging decision the court has made in recent years. And don't forget McCain/Feingold. Another anti-constitutional decision if ever there was one.
- Lester, Thornton
Easy now right wingers. I too cried when the Supreme court appointed Bush in 2000 over the cries of millions of cheated voters. Mr. Souter will go down as one of the most brilliant minds that court has ever seen. I am so proud of Mr. Souter is from our state and that he represents the working people of new hampshire not the elite right wing class that has kept this state down for too long.
- Gary, Nashua
George H.W. Bush's biggest mistake continues to be David Souter. Luckily he made up for it with Clarence Thomas.
- Gary, Derry
Hey Mike,Bow Has it occurred to you we probably would not be in the situation we are in if Clinton delt with the issues earlier, (When it was clear something was happening.) Instead GB is left dealing with 8 years of Clinton worrying about poll #s instead of keeping us safe. Not to mention were we would be if Al Gore won. Thank God it did not happen
- JL, Manchester
With the crooks that we have in the White House and the justice dept., not to mention the congress, we are fortunate to have a honest man like Souter on the supreme court.
- Jan, Tucson, AZ
I weep every time I think about how it was a Republican that appointed Souter to the SCOTUS.
- Gene, Rochester, NY
Hey Mike from Concord, those tears of joy will turn to tears of sadness when your boy GWB spends every last cent of this country's money on his personal crusade in Iraq. He's spending your children's money on that ridiculous war. Imagine what 700 billion dollars could do for our aging infrastructure, failing education system, and wide open borders.
- Mike, Bow
Does anyone really care if Justice Souter did or did not cry? Does anyone really care if he anguished over the majority decision or not? This isn't news - this is just tabloid fodder. The only point to this story is to promote the book by Toobin. Let’s have some news in the news paper.
- John Noll, Claremont
I wept tears of absolute joy the day the people of the great state of Florida voted for GWB. I thank the lord every day that AL Gore didn't win the election.
- Mike, Concord
Is it me or does Souter look unwell in all of his recent photographs? He looks pale and thin, very gaunt.
What is his health situation? Is he ill?
- Bob Hoskins, New Boston
The whole country should have wept the day Bush was elected by the Supreme Court.
- Tim, Milford, NH
What's the Union Leader's absorption with men supposedly crying? First Muskie, now Souter. Grow up.
- Scott Wilkinson, Hillsborough, NH
Souter lost any semblance of respectability he had with the Kelo decision.
- Brian, Manchester
Well Tom (Rath), maybe you won't talk about David Souter in public, but I will.
Although King John Sununu (and I mean that as a term of endearment) would never admit it, he must be kicking himself daily for recommending this unbelievable embarrassment to the Supreme Court. It has to be the dumbest thing he ever did.
How did this ultra liberal fool him and so many others? Were they so blinded by thier desire to have someone from NH on the high court that it didn't matter who it was?
It tells you all you need to know when you consider this fool voted for local governments to take your home and property that could have been in your family for generations in order to sell it to a developer to possibly make millions and then the local government enjoy the increase in tax revenue.
Is this the kind of laws we Americans want to live under? These are the types of laws David Souter wants you to live under and his voting record proves it.
- Randal S. Ripley, Manchester, NH
If Jeff Toobin wasn't bright enough to see the wit in Souter's joke, he was surely dim enough to be fooled by fables regarding a Souter resignation. Given his apparent penchant for drama, it might have been more appropriate for Jeff to follow up his book on OJ with one on Scott Peterson. Leave the serious topics to serious writers.
- gray, manchester
Maybe Souter and Bush should get together for a good cry session. God must have two shoulders...
- Del Maxwell, Manchester
Union Leader's disrespect of a fine NH native is not welcome. that's all you'll get oout of me, you ought to take a good look at YOURSELVES in the mirror.
- Al McCain, Gorham
Souter continues to be an embarrassment to the state. I do wish that he would have resigned and returned under his rock where the rest of the vermin live.
- Pamela, Washington, NH
