I was out on a boat with friends, before we had realized what happened, we saw police and state police racing over to another boat......we then saw them pulling bodies out of the water. Don't understand how we missed them actually jump, but I am glad we did not see that.

Not sure how lucky these guys are, or unlucky.....I feel for both of them.

I was in my way to work, and I was behind their car. I saw then getting out of the car and stared to run away. I was curious about what they were doing, I drove away to let the toll collector know, so they can call 911. It seems at the time that they loss a paper or a bill to pay the toll or were having an argument.

They are lucky they survived, but luck had little to do with it. They jumped a mere 20 minutes before absolute low tide. The small amount of water and large amount of muck they landed in cushioned their impact.

Most people forget the Mystic is a tidal river. Those who jump at low tide- and there are literally dozens more than we are told about- risk getting stuck in the mud. Some have gotten stuck head-first.

Not piling on here, Bob, but I would hardly say "they're" very lucky having suffered conditions that drove them to a suicide attempt. And they're doubly unlucky for having surivived! They apparently failed at life and at death. Tragic.

Some suicide pact participants I believe feel the only way they can be together and at peace is in eternity. If they only realized they were unique, importent and irreplaceable just the way they are the need to take such a hopeless step would never be necessary. The moral of my story is: We love you just the way you are.

Bob - it was Charles Stuart and the water temperature in January can kill you alone, not the height from which you jump.
- Catherine, Manchester

A "voluntary suicide attempt"??? Is there any other kind of suicide?
- Brian, Farmington

That was "Charles Stuart", Jan 4, 1990. Some jumpers miss the water completely.

Chuck Stewart, not "Smith" if I remember correctly.
- Jim, Manchester

The Tobin is 180 feet at it's highest level. Few have survived the fall over history. remember "Chuck Smith". The guy that had his pregnant wife shot in Boston. He jumped and didn't survive. Hitting the water at that speed is like hitting cement. I grew up in the neighborhood and many have used the bridge to end their life.

Their very lucky.
