Edith asks "what's so great about Kelly Ayotte?"

She's not Carol Shea Porter or Jeanne Shaheen. That alone is enough to get my vote.
- Dana, Candia, Nh

Great news - she will not be able to win and there is still a chance that the next AG will actually investigate corruption in state agencies like the one in Tilton.
- Nadia, Concord

What a great lesson in semantics. The headline states: My "intent was to continue serving." Spike of Brentwood takes issue because the actual quote was "The intent was to continue serving." One word can make all the difference.
- A, Manchester

Wow listen to the vitriol from the left! You'd think that since their guys are in power EVERYWHERE that they'd tone down the rhetoric and just coast for a while. Try to be the nice guys. I guess it just goes to show that it's impossible to project logic on such a twisted political philosophy.
- BenThere, New Boston

The most important question for the voter is which one am I more disappointed in, Kelly Ayotte or Gov John Lynch?

Well stated Dallas, but you did forget one important aspect. Kelly Ayotte has never been elected to anything, and has the charisma of a bull frog. How will she hold up under scrutiny?
- Tim, Enfield

Ayotte and Palin are indeed not comparable! (and I wrote elsewhere that a week or two of separation might have avoided the inevitable comparison. Tim, the Union-Leader is not hypocritical to give the two equal treatment; in fact the Union-Leader would be sexist to do so, as their sex is about all they have in common.

It would be remarkable if a policymaker in our political system did not pursue a political career, or if that really surprised the Governor.

But part of Ayotte's explanation of not remaining in office sounds a little like the Bill Clinton ethos, "I meant it when I said it." And "The intent was" is impersonal, as though explaining a case of victimhood rather than a personal decision. She needs not to tiptoe around ideas.
- Spike, Brentwood NH

Congratulations Kelly!! We look forward to supporting you if you run for Senaator Gregg's seat.
- gr chase, Exeter

I trust that the common citizen has been able to recognize Ayotte for the "political being" that she is. She has pandered to the rich, the connected, and those who hold power. She was never for the common citizen. She lacks true integrity, courage, and leadership. That the "Republican Party" would even consider her a good choice for the common citizen tells me how removed those people are from the majority of us. Pay attention to who will be backing her and know that these are the folks she truly serves.

What's so great about Kelly Ayotte?
- Edith Lennox, Hanover

Tim, from Manchester obviously doesn't understand the difference between an elected position versus an appointed one. Palin, who unlike Ayotte is an idiot, was entrusted by the people of Alaska to govern the state. Ayotte was first selected by Benson, one of the few intelligent actions he made during his tenure, and was selected again by Lynch. She agreed to the appointment but unlike Palin she was not elected so she is not betraying the trust of the people whereas Palin is. Furthermore, since Palin bailed out of one elected office what's to say she wouldn't do the same if elected president? My guess is we'll find out the real reason has nothing to do with her so called 'higher calling'. Instead it will be something venal.
- Dallas Langevin, Loudon

So will the UL editorial staff post a similar editorial about Ayotte tomorrow as the one they posted about Palin today? If not they are hypocrites as usual.
- Tim, Manchester, NH

What a great way to brighten a rainy day! If we have to lose Judd Gregg, at least we will have a great replacement.
