Big, enthusiastic crowd greets Palin in NH
By JOHN DISTASO AND PAULA TRACY
Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2008
Sarah Palin made her New Hampshire debut in front of enthusiastic Dover and Laconia crowds today. She labeled Barack Obama a big spender and big taxer.

You folks in New Hampshire are lucky to be in one of the states where you actually get to see the candidates. My state is assumed to go for Obama, so we are left out.
Tonight's debate was the best, and reinforced my sense that John McCain has the strength, character and courage to lead this nation in a better direction.

Heather, I agree that "teacher" was embarassing--even more so when you find out he's not a teacher, he's the superintentant for Dover schools! If I was a Dover taxpayer I'd be mighty upset.
- K., Portsmouth
There were maybe a dozen protesters in Dover...not dozens - the superintendent bringing a class of unruly and obnoxious students outside to hold signs and scream through the entire event should not be considered proteters. Dover HS should be ashamed.
- Lauren, Stratham
I'm so happy Gov. Palin came to NH. Its just the spark we needed to get revved up in order to swing New Hampshire into McCain's column!
- Holly Lane Ginder, Concord, NH
Oh look at the Obama supporters trying to undermine how many people came to the event. Its hysterical. Sorry, but I was there and there were thousands of people there and the funny thing is that there were THOUSANDS more that couldn't get in because Palin drew so much support.
- Kevin Lyons, Raymond, NH
AWESOME event! I don believe that the protester numbers are a bit exaggerated and it was pretty low when it was a teacher protesting with his students. Anyways, this woman is amazing and I can't wait to cast my vote for Palin and McCain on Nov. 4th!!
- Barbara Manning, Manchester
JMFulton, grow up! She had her child on stage with her. What is so wrong with that? Obama has had his children on stage with him at several events and you don't consider them "props." And are you, an individual from Massachusetts, actually asking NH voters if we "fall" for bad politicians? You've got to be kidding me! You guys have fallen for Sen. Kennedy for decades and he is one of the worst, most liberal, and most corrupt senators EVER! You have good ol' Barny Frank who we can actually blame this financial fiasco on. I'm sorry, but the true NH voter (not those Mass. transplants) would never vote for half of the people you have voted for down there in liberal Massachusetts. Don't worry about what we do here in NH and we won't worry about what corruption you deal with down there in Mass.
- Ryan Feltner, Manchester, New Hampshire
Did I see Sarah Palin on stage using her baby son as a campaign prop? I have heard of politicians kissing babies, but this is in poor taste, to say the least. Do people up there fall for that stuff? She's certainly hoping so.
Gidget Goes To Washington? No thanks.
- JMFulton, Jr., Stockbridge, MA
Dozens of protesters??? What you see in the picture is IT!
- rachel, nottingham
The rally should have been held at UNH to allow for the hundreds that were turned away. I think Palin's draw is underestimated. Also, the teacher who brought his class outside to protest/taunt should be ashamed. Those kids behaved like animals! My kids were amazed by their bad behavior.
- Heather, Raymond
Why do you people still read the UL if all you believe is it's politically biased? This is exactly why I don't read the Boston Globe or watch liberal network news.
- Steve, Manchester
So if you're overly concerned with math, I direct you to the 5 or six protesters in the lower photo. The one captioned "Dozens of protesters..."
Btw, where does one get a polar bear suit these days, anyway?
- Richard, Manchester
Why no pictures from the Biden event online? Seems pretty biased.
- Jim Wilson, Manchester
RE: Editors note. I love that technicality. Thousands gather (including Dover and Weirs Beach). The Union Leader is the 'grain of salt' newspaper. Because we've always got to read any political story with a grain of salt.
- Linda, Manchester
Well Ed, you need to dig a little deeper. According to emergency officials at the scene in Dover, and now being reported by the local media also in attendance, the crowd that awited Palin was in excess of 3000. And the "hundreds" that you mention? That would be the hundreds that officials reported left the scene when they were told attendance had swelled past the maximum number allowed. Sorry ED, the Palin visit to Dover (as I suspect the other two events will reflect) was an overwhelming success measured, quite literally, in "the thousands"!
- Thomas Thorpe, Portsmouth, NH
Your front page headline says, 'Thousands gather..." Your article says 1,300. To reach "thousands" you need at least two; you don't have that amount. It should read, "Hundreds gather." An honest mistake? Possibly. UL bias? possibly. A poor reporter who missed math class? Possibly.
(Editor's note: The headline, which is accurate, refers to the crowds in Dover and at Weirs Beach.)
