Daniel Webster College in Nashua took little time in finding a new men's basketball coach.

And Phil Rowe, the school's assistant vice president of student affairs for athletics, has landed a big name.

Dave Faucher, the former longtime head coach and assistant at Dartmouth College, has signed on to be the next Daniel Webster coach, according to college basketball sources in the state.

Faucher, the sources said, is expected to be introduced at a news conference on Monday. Reached by phone yesterday, Faucher declined to comment or confirm the new job.

Daniel Webster announced the position was open on Monday after Jeremy Currier resigned to take a job as associate head coach at Division 2 Pfeiffer University in Meisenheimer, N.C. Currier coached the team to a 7-19 record last season. He had taken over the top job after a year as an assistant.

Faucher, a University of New Hampshire graduate, spent 20 years at Dartmouth. He was an assistant under Paul Cormier for the first seven years. When Cormier left for Fairfield University, Faucher became the head coach for the 1991-92 season.

His teams had a record of 136-208 over the next 13 years and Faucher was let go after the 2003-04 season. He led the Big Green to an 18-8 record in 1996-97. Dartmouth was 10-4 in the Ivy League that season, one of three seasons it reached that mark during his tenure.

After a year in the business world, Faucher, 59, moved on to Kimball Union Academy in Meriden, where he has been alumni relations director and has worked with the basketball program.

Faucher takes over as Daniel Webster moves out of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference and into a new NCAA Division 3 league, the New England Collegiate Conference.

Becker, Elms, Lesley, Mitchell, Newbury, South Vermont and Wheelock are joining the Eagles in the new league.

Faucher should have plenty to work with this season. There was only one senior on the roster last year and the nine top scorers are eligible to return.

Three of the top five scorers were freshmen, including Steve Savage, a 6-foot-3 guard from Salem who averaged 9.5 points a game.
