so all you people ripping him for not voting on this one issue where he has a conflict of interests.......
did you vote for obama, the guy with the most 'present' votes? how is that full representation?
- ryan, manchester
Even though my state's governor was impeached and I fully applaud it, I whole heartedly disagree with those that are complaining about the Senator deferring from voting on the stimulus package. If he did there would clearly have been conflict of interests and that was exactly what he was avoiding in his decision. For those of you that yell "Do your damn job" at your senator, I proclaim "He did exactly that as no honorable elected official would allow for conflict of interests to occur when voting on items in the Senate." Former Governor Blagoivich, however, would have sold his vote for the package for a vote in return. Not all politicians are like Ronnie but unfortunately I don't doubt a good majority of Republican and Democrats alike are. It's time we stop voting for the lesser of two evils for either way you vote for evil in doing so. Go third party!
- Stevo, Chicago, IL
Gregg is a fraud and certainly representative of the republican party which craves Obama failures--failures which will harm this country more than any possible terrorist attack
- ed kiersh, westport,ct
Hey, I bet all you right wingers all incensed about not having any representation are all going to go out and write letters demanding that GOP stop blocking Al Franken from taking his senate seat, I bet?
Listen you sore losers, once the Democrats had 61 votes to pass the stimulus, it didn't matter if Gregg voted or not. Gregg is doing the right thing. His nomination is before the Senate, and it would be unethical for him to vote while it is, because it would open him to charges of swapping his vote for a vote. And as long as he is not confirmed, he is the legally elected Senator from New Hampshire, and he has every right to hold his seat until the confirmation hearings are over. What a bunch of sore losers.
- Kirk, Raymond
Gregg helped craft the failed TARP bail out. He knew the people of New Hampshire were opposed to TARP and he damn well knows they are opposed to this pay back pork package. He has'nt got the courage to stand with his esteemmed colleagues in opposition because he only cares now that he is nominated. Just shows what a man is made of when given the choice between personal gain or doing the right thing for the people who made him.
- Jim Bergeron, Pelham
"Gregg's actions speak of the type of person he has become, all for him and to hell with everyone else especially those who voted for him."
And how is this different than any other politician? They don't care about us; they have a job and health care. In fact the more they screw up, the higher up the food chain they go.
- RJ, manchester
I am very disappointed with SENATOR Gregg's decision. NH's representation has been compromised.
- Ann, Ashland
Either do your job or resign, Sen. Gregg.
- Tom, Campton
Gregg's actions speak of the type of person he has become, all for him and to hell with everyone else especially those who voted for him. I've got this violent urge to hurl! He should consider never returning to New Hampshire. What a disgrace!!!!!
- Dennis, Merrimack, NH
Sen. Gregg's new position typically involves oversight of the national census, however, under the new Obama regime, the census' control has been moved directly to the Oval Office. One has to ask themselves, why? I'll tell you why...because the next census will likely include illegals, and will have a greater impact on redistricting, and electoral votes for those states with higher populations than originally thought....it's a power grab, and no republican (despite Gregg not really being Republican) will have their hand in it.
Transparency at it finest!!!
- Bob, Hampstead
Gregg is behaving outrageously! He was elected to do a job. He should do it. Or he should step aside and let someone else do it.
His position is outrageous. It leaves NH without full representation. He's putting his personal position ahead of NH's. Who cares about what he does with his personal life after he quits Representing NH and moves on with Obama. But if he's representing us, he should do it.
Or he should NEVER represent us again.
Shame on him. Outrageous!
He should do his duty, or get off the pot!
- Bob Jean, Northwood
What do you expect from someone who's acne flare-up kept him from military service during the Viet Nam era. As usual the privileged live different lives than the rest of us commoners and how dare you question it.
- Dennis, Derry
What a sham! Gregg won't step aside until he is confirmed so he can remain a "senator." If for some reason the democrat (in republican clothing) is not confirmed he knows he will still have a job but at NH's expense. Shame on you Mr. Gregg!
- Gary Francoeur, Manchester
Damn it. New Hampshire deserves to have 2 full time senators on the job. If Gregg isn't up to the job, then we need an immediate replacement. Doesn't matter if he's waiting for confirmation or not. He was elected to do a job for us and frankly, he's not doing it. he should step down immediately so he can be replaced. If he's not willing to do that, that's an immediate, clear cut indicator that he's unfit for ANY government position, as he places his own desires above the needs of the people of New Hampshire.
Gov Lynch supposedly has picked Bonnie Newman as his replacement. I'm fine with that. But Ms Newman had better be ready to step up to the plate right now. If not, we need to put someone else in the Senate.
I may need to have my head examined for saying so, but I'd volunteer for the position, if necessary. As a retired military member, I'm used to being deployed on a moment's notice. As a disgruntled Republican, I'd satisfy Mr Gregg's condition for a Republican replacement, while still being sensitive to the voices of Democrats, independents and the minority parties in the state.
Let me close by reiterating. We need full representation in Washington D.C. NOW. Mr Gregg, either lead, follow or get the heck out of our way.
- Michael D. Houst, Barrington, NH
These comments reflect a fundamental misunderstanding of how the Senate works.
The key vote on a piece of controversial legislation is the vote to end debate or cloture, which requires 60 votes. It doesn't matter if Gregg voted against cloture or if he didn't vote. It's still a vote against the bill getting passed.
Now all that's left is for the Senate to vote on the bill itself, which requires only 50 votes to pass... again it doesn't matter if Gregg votes or not, because there is no way the bill fails at this point.
As for Steve from Manch's confused argument about Biden having already been sworn in, Gregg said he was going to follow Biden's example, meaning what he did in the past.
Biden was elected VP in November, but did not resign from the Senate until mid-January. For 2.5 months, he was a Senator not participating in the Senate.
- Kevin Barnett, Nashua, NH
I am completely against Judd Gregg not voting, and I strongly think that he should be voting regardless of what he is about to become. However, he is still our elected senator and as such he deserves our respect. The comments before are shameful. I am not a fan of what our government is doing, but seriously cut the endless name-calling.
- Seth Horton, Dublin
Judas Gregg has always been and will still bwe a sniveling coward, there is never a controversial issue that he did not duck on. Once a weeny always a weeny.
- Richard L. Fortin, Manchester
Hmmmm... Catch 22, huh Gregg?
Don't want to be on record as supporting the spending bill, but a little leary of upsetting the future boss by voting against it.
It's fun to watch unprincipled politicians sqirm.
Peace.
- Thom, Hummelstown, PA
He was elected to represent NH and until there is a replacement he has a responsiblity to do so. Since we won't be represented maybe we should make a stance in New Hampshire and not pay federal taxes? no taxation without representation. Besides this bill is putting a band-aid on an axe wound, it didn't work when Hoover through $300 million in to economy how and why would it work now. With all the $ being thrown around if the Fed's gave everybody a one year holiday on Fed taxes people would instantly have more money to spend. I believe that would be a little more beneficial than giving money to Acorn.
- Steve, Manchester
That is irresponsible. He is still the senator from NH and in order to keep his name in the running for the cabinet position he is willing to sell NH out? That is disgusting. He is saddling the NH peoples children and grandchildren with a bill that is just going to hurt the economy even more
- jim shuff, freedom
Sen. Gregg is still a US Senator elected by the people of NH to represent them. He has an obligation to VOTE, either way, until he is no longer a US Senator.
- Don, Manchester
Biden is no longer a senator, he was sworn in as vice president. His replacement is Kaufman, and Gregg surely knows this. Delaware has two senators voting on the stimulus bill. http://thehill.com/leading-the-news/kaufman-sworn-in-as-bidens-replacement-2009-01-16.html
Will the UL let Gregg get away with openly deceiving his constituents?
- Steve, Manch
Sen Gregg is still a senator and has a responsibility to vote. He opened the flood gates of money last year, violating whatever conservative principles he had left. Excused himself from the committee overseeing how the $$ are spent. Now he wants to joint a liberal administration in a position that is being stripped of any real importance. The census won't even be reporting to Commerce but directly to the White House! Doesn't he have any self-respect?
