H.S. Football Roundup: Alvirne whips Owls, makes Div. II playoffs
Alvirne of Hudson secured the final playoff spot in Division II with a 32-7 victory on its home turf, bouncing Timberlane of Plaistow from the postseason last night.
The Broncos took control early. Signal caller Patrick Reidy found Vinny Frasco for a 23-yard touchdown pass that gave the Broncos a 6-0 lead in the first quarter, and Reidy soon made it 14-0 with a quarterback keeper.
Timberlane star running Derek Furey (ankle injury) didn't play, but the Owls got on the board with Luke Ouellette's 53-yard touchdown gallop. Sean Sipsey, on a 3-yard touchdown run, pushed Alvirne's lead to 20-7 by halftime.
Nick Goldsack scored a pair of touchdowns in the second half, and the Broncos finished the regular season at 5-5 overall (4-4 Div. II). Reidy had a big night, completing nine of 10 passes for 109 yards. Running back Jesse Horne churned out 111 yards on 22 attempts for the winners.
Timberlane moved to 4-6 overall (4-4 Div. II). Alvirne earned a semifinal bout against the winner of tonight's much-anticipated Exeter at Bishop Guertin of Nashua contest.
Winnacunnet 53, Spaulding 13: Jesse Gould's 79-yard kickoff return was among the many highlights for playoff-bound Winnacunnet of Hampton, which took care of business at Rochester last night.
Quarterback Steven Cronin fired an 11-yard touchdown pass to Harry Knowles as the Warriors (7-3 overall, 5-3 Div. II) warmed up in the first quarter. It was 40-0 by halftime.
Jason Busfield rushed 15 times for 137 yards and two touchdowns, and Mike Trainor added a pair of short yardage TDs. Winnacunnet's Brett Taylor rushed for 44 yards and added a touchdown.
West 28, Concord 7: Louis Rochette had a 35-yard touchdown run to spark the Blue Knights at Concord last night. Both teams entered the game looking for their first win in Division I.
