By STAFF AND WIRE REPORT
Tuesday, Feb. 3, 2009
Republican J. Bonnie Newman, a veteran of state and national politics who has never held elective office, is Gov. John Lynch's choice for U.S. senator. In his announcement speech, the Democratic governor said Newman would not seek election in 2010 nor would she endorse a candidate.

I'm confused by Gov. Lynch's replacement for Judd Gregg. If the state has a competent former Senator such as John Sununu in the wings, who has done a fine job and has just been replaced by a bumbling-big-mouth-do-nothing, why wouldn't he (Lynch), select Sununu to replace Gregg being that he knows the ropes and could make huge inroads for New Hampshire instead of appointing another bumbling-big-mouth-do-nothing who will take three years to figure out a two year appointment? Oh I'm sorry, I already answered my own question!
What ever happened to our national slogan of, "We The People"? Perhaps Govener Lynch should reread Article 1,Section 3 of our Constitution before appointing a replacement for Senator Gregg!
- JL, newmarket
This is INSANE. She is a Lynch AND Obama supporter and part of the cabal of Republicans who handed NH to the liberals. What a shame.
David Parent has it right -- there are no more two parties, only US and THEM.. and she's one of THEM. Why is it that our sovereignty and bill of rights is considered another century? Why do "progressives" want to be so willing to hand what we have over to the globalist bankers elitist ruling? They must hate themselves so badly that everything our founders fought for is being lost. We need a revolution in this country... and soon... to regain our freedom.
People like Gregg and Newman are not good for this country.
- Sue, Manchester
Marc, Weare
Not sure where you are getting your information but there are more registered dems than repubs in NH for the first time this year. The independents ran to the dem ticket after your party nearly destroyed the country. I'm sorry you couldn't have 4 more years of Bush. No, wait, I'm not.
Face it, the old, brain-dead are dying off and republican numbers are dropping, 10 years from now this state is going to be Vermont.
Socialism is a lot better than fascism!
- Chip, Wilton
Senator Newman is going from one broken organization (Fairpoint) to another (US Senate). Nice growing resume, though.
- Jim, Manchester
I have found this whole situation rather amusing. There are just enough twists and turns in this affair to make everyone unhappy. Now that's what I call true democracy.
Judd Gregg gets a cabinet appointment to the office that he voted in favor of abolishing as a member of the Budget Committee and on the Senate floor in 1995, and doesn't have to worry about getting tossed out in 2010, in what would have been a nondescript end to his rather undistinguished career in. President Obama gets to claim the most bipartisan cabinet since FDR's first administration. Bonnie Newman gets admission into the most exclusive club in the country without ever having to campaign, and Lynch get to play the part of magnanimous nonpartisan Governor.
Looks like everyone comes out a happy winner..... ah.... except the voters. Only in America folks. The only way this could have been better was if they had waited until April Fools day to announce it.
- Mike Lane, Manchester
I feel bad for the people of New Hampshire. They had no say in the appointment of Judd Gregg as Cabinent Secretary nor in his successor, Bonnie Newman as US Senator. The fix was in and they all need to go in 2010, including Lynch who proved to be just another insider.
- jack Truman, Middleton
A bit OT....
The photo of Ms. Newman with Gov Lynch is very good. It pops off the screen.
Enough of that. Back to the mudslinging....
- mary, nashua
Art from Portsmouth....uhhh....Republicans started LOSING elections when they abandoned their conservative roots and started spending money and expanding government like democrats.
Alice in Portsmouth....hate radio??? Yeah okay. So let me guess...just like almost every other liberal I know (save a couple that think for themselves), you must feel that anything NOT in line with your liberal worldview = hate. THERE's "tolerance and diversity" for ya, folks. The hypocritical liberals who leave hateful comments about how hateful conservatives are never cease to amaze me.
If the tables were completely turned, the democrats would be whining and crying about the "balance of power" just as they did a few years back when the republicans held a slim margin in the Senate. We would be hearing nightly news stories about how this would hold "Grave consequences" in 2010 with hints of an evil right-wing conspiracy. But now that the socialists are in complete power, "all is well in the asylum" said the inmate.
As for 2010, all will hinge upon how well the liberal-spending-spree masquerading as a stimulus package works.
- Mike, Temple
Marc in Weare: give up the fantasy that New Hampshire is conservative state locked into the 19th century. Despite all the conservatives moving into the state from Massachussets, the Granite State is moving steadly toward the sane center left. Get used to it.
- LJC, Manchester
Any attempts to go more conservative will doom the party to even more irrelevance. - Art, Portsmouth
- This is the sick and twisted philosophy that has allowed the socialists to win the day. People like you Art are the problem. You don't understand you will never out democrat the democrats. It's time to change the landscape and define the battle. It's the republican/one worlders or the democratic/one worlders. The old Republican party is dead. Forget it. Let's make it real simple for the populace, shall we. It's the Global/Socialists versus the Constitutionalists now. The Republic is doomed to go the way of the E.U. if we fail to define the what the real battle is about. Get some guts.
- David Parent, Manchester NH
John Sununu didn't "closely" lose the election...he lost it big time.
Bob Smith didn't do much better since he was forced out by his own party.
Republicans and Democrats are so close on the vast political spectrum that you can barely tell them apart. If you want real representation for everyone change the constitution and allow a percentage-based voting system akin to most of the world governments. Then you have real debate and real policy change.
- Chris, Londonderry
I could not agree we do need a woman for a change.
More with Governor Lynch should have appointed a woman to US Senator Judd Gregg's set. Rather then a man. We still live in a good old boys world.
Jocelyn Gallant, Salem
- Jocelyn Gallant, Salem, NH
Boy what a fantasy I was enjoying before this announcement! John Sununu back in the US Senate! Then the meds wore off. Wake me up in 2013 when the new administration is sworn in...
- Chris, Chester
What has happened to our state? I hate all you flatlanders for moving up here and commiting blasphemy by doing to our state exactly what you did to your own, destroy it!!!! do you think any of these socialists would have been elected if only people from New Hampshire were allowed to vote? Of course not!!
- augustus, alexandria
The future success of the Republican Party is dependent on it getting back to it's moderate roots, not it's conservative angry world-hating wing.
The party of Abraham Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt is what is needed and what is wanted. This is the real Republican Party.
Any attempts to go more conservative will doom the party to even more irrelevance.
- Art, Portsmouth
When I first heard that Judd Gregg was going to be nominated as Commerce Secretary my first thought of his replacement would be Bonnie Newman. I only met her once but she's a dynamic person and will work for the people. I am so glad the Governor is considering her and she should fill the post.
- Annie, Merrimack, NH 03054
"From the gritty streets of NE Mass to the highest levels of government, business, and academia". - bill_o, manchester, nh
Thank you bill_o. I couldn't have made a better case against this globalist myself.
- Sam Hajj, salem
Republican = Democrat
Democrat = Republican
They are all screwing us.
- DM, Hampton
Worked closely with Bonnie Newman when she managed Judd's first campaign for Congress nearly 30 years ago. She is entirely self-made in the true "Joe the Plumber" sense, going from the gritty streets of NE Mass to the highest levels of government, business, and academia. She's "been there, done that" and invariably done it well. Have lost touch with her over the years, but recall that her instincts were very conservative on economic issues. She is a quick study and is probably the most conservative individual we could have hoped for from a Democratic governor.
- bill_o, manchester, nh
Another RINO who will be easily defeated. In 2010 we'll either get a Democrat in name or a Democrat in practice. Either way, we all lose.
- Stan, Amherst
Chip, get over yourself. NH is a proud conservative state and will always be. Just because it got caught up in Obamamania doesn't mean that the repubs will not be back to correct this error.
Chip, why don't you move to NY or Cali - they love liberals there and you will not have to deal with anybody whining.
To Sen. Newman! Godspeed to Washington and I hope you serve NH as well as Sen. Gregg.
- Marc, Weare
RINO = Democrat
I'm sure the Dems are secretly pleased with Dictator Lynch's decision.
It's time that NH conservatives come together and kick all the RINOs, and Liberal Dems out of our state. Maybe we should round them up on barges a float them back down to Boston & NYC.
- Everett, Newmarket
Wow, I thought the pessimistic and cynical UL could have done a better job tearing this woman down but i guess those Bush connections are bullet-proof.
Anyway, it's not like there is a shortage of losers in NH who sit back and whine and complain about everything in NH politics (republicans).
Eric Belmont, if you want hard-core republicanism you may need to go to Mississippi or another southern destination. If you want cold there's always Alaska. Best of luck.
- Chip, Wilton
Bob Smith lives in Florida. He is also a turn-coat from the Republican Party when he bolted and ran for president as an independent.
He is beyond conservative and rather mean & extreme for today's New Hampshire
- Matt, Durham
Contrary to many who've weighed in with their comments, Bonnie Newman has actually contributed - in meaningful ways - to the quality of life for Granite Staters. Political rhetoric may be entertaining for some, but I prefer leaders with experience, gravity and balance. We get all of that with Bonnie Newman.
- Mike, Newmarket
Why don’t you whine on hate-radio. You sit there and whine as the liberals take over everything around you. It is great to have another Senator that has Bush Ties… Bush is just not another four letter word, but it is a sure way to get the Repubs out during the next senator election.
Just think Emily’s List and Moveon.org having a field day with this in 2010. "Newman voted with Bush 90% of the time."
Hey Repubs.. why don't you have a 70 year old man be the head of the NHGOP.. It worked well with McCain
- Alice, Portsmouth
J. Bonnie Newman is an excellent choice, not only for the State of New Hampshire, but for the people across the country. Smart, dedicated and fair, Bonnie would be my first choice as well. And I don't claim homage to any particular party.
- brenda w, Strafford, NH
Good grief--Bob Smith? Isn't that nutter still guarding Elian Gonzalez??
- JB, NB, NH
It is a shame that Bob Smith isn't in the mix. We could use a real conservative voice in the Senate.
- John, Wolfeboro, NH
Bonnie Newman is simply "first class!" She is highly regarded by anyone that knows her and will be a refreshing face in the US Senate if appointed. While some of the afforementioned comments portray unrest that she is not a radical, that is what we need for our country at this point. She calls it like she sees them. The citizens of the state of NH along with the US as a whole, should be proud to have this distinguished ad celebrated professional in Washington.
- Justin Pike, Portsmouth
If Lynch cared about the people he would give us John Sununu back. Then he would be representing all the people. That election was close, John is a good guy, it would make perfect sense. But then again it would require Lynch to not be political.
- Christian, Goffstown
half a republican might be better than nothing!
- fpc, manchester
Lynch, strong ties to Newman, Gregg, strong ties to Newman.....
Sounds like "Deliverance". There no difference - they all have the same DNA.
- Bob H, Londonderry
"President of the University of New Hampshire and executive dean at the Harvard University's Kennedy School of Government".
- Read the writing on the wall folks. This should speak volumes about her political philosphy. She is a global-socialist which is the flip side of the democratic-socialist coin.
- David Parent, manchester, nh
Why are we giving this away? Let's auction it off on eBay!
Judd if you want to help NH then tell Mr Lynch to sell the seat to the highest bidder - we need the cash to fix our roads and bridges!!!
- bob, Concord
Drag the deadbeat hard right to the center whether they like it or not. Very good, I approve! This is good politics.
- Abe, Pittsfield
From the NH U L: "Newman is close to Lynch as well as Gregg. She co-chaired 'Republicans for Lynch' during the governor's first campaign in 2004; the two have strong ties to the state university system."
Another report had Republican Doug Scamman as a possible replacement stating that Scamman and Newman were allies of Lynch. Now Kevin, what have learned here today?
That the base of the NH GOP will be rewarded for your hard work on campaigns and your loyalty?
Oh, wait, for those of us who never support Democrats because we know the difference, there is no room for us when it comes to opportunity.
So much to talk about during my Saturday mroning radio program (wezs.com The Advocates).
bnyoung@metrocast.net
- Niel Young, Laconia
Looks like there is certainly no shortage of RINOs in New Hampshire. Change We Can Believe In? What a joke.
- James Celeste, Derry
Newman has never been elected to anything. Her entire career has developed through one after another appointment favors.
She will make a perfect U.S. senator; she won't have to jump into the bag of favoritism; she's already there.
Thank you Lynch for giving us one of your own. Just as you are a fiscal spendthrift who never will owe up to it, she is a closet Dem who won't owe up to it.
- Bill, Mont Vernon
I think its' great that Gregg is moving on. Now, in two years, we can complete the process of turning NH into the rest of New England. I grew up in Mass, moved to VT for work and then moved here because it seemed like the only sane place (socially and politically) left in New England. What a shame. Who would have thought that Senator Gregg would be the one to throw the last shovel of dirt on this grave.
- Eric Shirley, Belmont, NH
No, NO, NO, She has way too many favors that have to be paid back, Look at everything she has been involved with. Way too many people to please but the common person. lets say NA NAy to her and put a person in who is for the people, not just the well heeled.
- dick pender, concord nh
"I think she'll vote a lot like Judd on fiscal issues," [Carney] said. "She'll be pretty similar on economic recovery stuff."
In other words, more big-governmentalism. Another RINO-lite.
No thanks. Might as well call a pot a kettle and jsut appoint a Democrat, if the voting goes the same way in the end.
What a weird world we entered when "conservative" started meaning someone who favored big government, only governing different things.
- Kevin, Lancaster
