John McCain is the man to lead America

By PUBLISHER JOSEPH W. MCQUAID

On Jan. 8, New Hampshire Republicans will make one of the most important choices for their party and nation in the history of our presidential primary. Their choice ought to be John McCain.

We don't agree with him on every issue. We disagree with him strongly on campaign finance reform. What is most compelling about McCain, however, is that his record, his character, and his courage show him to be the most trustworthy, competent, and conservative of all those seeking the nomination. Simply put, McCain can be trusted to make informed decisions based on the best interests of his country, come hell or high water.

dec2 McCain 135px

Competence, courage, and conviction are enormously important for our next President to possess. No one has a better understanding of U.S. interests and dangers right now than does McCain. He was right on the mistakes made by the Bush administration in prosecuting the Islamic terrorist war in Iraq and he is being proved right on the way forward both there and worldwide.

McCain is pro-life. Always has been. He fights against special-interest and pork-barrel spending, and high spending in general, which ticks off liberals and many in the GOP who have wallowed at the public trough. Yet he also has the proven ability, unique among the contenders, to work across the political divide that has led our government into petty bickering when important problems need to be solved.

We have known John McCain for many years. We will write more about him in the days ahead. For now, we leave you with this to ponder:

When McCain was shot down and taken prisoner by the North Vietnamese, he was repeatedly beaten. When his captors discovered that his father was a top U.S. admiral, they ordered him released for propaganda purposes. But McCain refused, insisting that longer-held prisoners be released before him. So they beat him some more. He never gave in then, and he won't give in to our enemies now.

John McCain is the man to lead America.

The only difference between McCain and Bush is McCain did serve his country honorably in Vietnam, something Bush can't claim to have done. McCain promises more war (something he should detest), has no answer for the sour economy, will legalize all the illegal immigrants (that make up a major part of the labor force in his home state) and will support the degradation of our civil liberties in the name of fear and terror. This country needs change and a new direction, something more of the same McCain does not offer.
- Joe Jackson, Merrimack

Thank you, the Manchester Union Leader for endorsing Senator John McCain. I also believe he should be the next President of the United States. He has a proven personal life and a proven track record as a United States Senator. I am pleased that NH has not lost touch with realty despite the increase in Liberals to NH.
- Russell W. MacDonald, Alton, New Hampshire (Home of Record)

john mccain is old news, his views on illegal immigration and the economy are not in line with mainstream republican
views,as a republican myself i cannot see
any positive agreement with mccain and
would in no way vote for him,he's been around for yrs in washington and i don't
see any great accomplishments.
- phillip johnson, calera,al

I hope I never become so narrow-minded as to think the President and I must always agree. In fact, dissent is a part of democracy and informed dissent is essential to our survival. So, while there is no "perfect" candidate out there--despite those whose voices and faces insist "they-can-do-it-all-for-everyone"--the only person of either party willing to stand consistently for his values, whose leadership and experience are real and extensive, and whose quiet, steady, sincere and devoted approach to why he wants to be elected is John McCain--a proven patriot with the wisdom and knowledge to make the hard decisions, to reject pandering, and who I know loves America as I and other Americans do. With maturity, proven personal integrity, experience in domestic and foreign affairs, a commitment to American strength and the only person with the courage to stand for what's right, I need to vote for Sen. John McCain--and so does America.
- Sharon Norby, Alton NH

NH voters are famously fair-minded and independent. The Union Leader's daily negative campaign against Mitt Romney will backfire. Similarly, to have the liberal Concord Monitor in bed with the UL telling GOP Primary voters NOT to vote for Romney can only help Mitt in the long run. No candidate has worked harder or spent more time in NH than Mitt. Mitt's true character and record will shine through - as we'll all see on Jan. 8.
- Michael Moffett, Concord

McCain would make a good choice except for two main things: McCain-Fiengold and his stand on immigration. Anyone who agrees with 'The Hero of Chappaquiddick' will not get my vote.
- Richard Carter, fitzwilliam

McQuaid's suggestion that McCain is a conservative suggests McQuaid took a bad spill recently and needs to seek immediate medical attention. Quickly.

The Boston Globe gave him their endorsement, for crying out loud. He voted against the Bush tax cuts, sides with Ted Kennedy on immigration, and penned the legislation banning political speech to protect incumbent politicians. Even a man with a serious head injury should be able to recognize that the good Senator is not a conservative.
- Michael Costolo, Amherst

Republicans nattering nuances about who is the most Republican or most Conservative do not stimulate interest in most Independent voters. The Democrats are more entertaining ...Bread and circuses cause excitement! Independents lean toward "Anyone but Hillary". Meanwhile all the posturing and promises about taxes, judges and the war are meaningless if you can't win in November 2008! If John McCain is the Republican candidate he will draw back the Independents, moderates, Reagan Democrats and others who value competence, courage, candor and character. Both Republicans and Independents should look ahead to the general election to pick someone who can effectively lead the country.
- Edward F Shevlin, Ashland, NH and New Port Richey, FL

While I respect Senator McCain and his character, I do not feel that he is in step with the conservative base. Governor Huckabee, Congressman Paul, and Duncan Hunter seem to be more conservative in their views. Of these, I am supporting Dr. Paul, who I think understands independant conservatives and libertarian leaning voters better than anyone else in the race. Ron Paul has been a consistant supporter of gun rights, property rights, and smaller government, and the Republican Party needs a man like this at its head.
- Albert "Max" Abramson, Manchester

I am surprised by the Union Leader's endorsement of McCain. Though I find him to be an excellent statesman, I feel that he is not the best choice for the Republican Party, or the country. The GOP needs to go back to its roots as a non-interventionist, non-nation-building, small government party. McCain is a man that has helped to limit the freedom of individuals to give their monetary support to candidates, allowing PACs and mega-corporations to help steer the elections even more. The residents of New Hampshire need to heed their "Live Free or Die" motto, and take another look at Ron Paul. As Daniel Webster said, "There is nothing so powerful as the truth..." and growing up I read that phase daily in the Union Leader's Newspaper (having only left the state to be with my husband who is in the Army). It was my upbringing in New Hampshire that taught me to embrace liberty, and love freedom. New Hampshire needs to help take back our country and endorse Ron Paul, not McCain. Endorsing Paul would've made Gen. John Stark proud.
- Virginia Bowden Winters, Fairbanks AK

I disagree with you totally on John McCain. Certainly the liberals like him. He appears to be everything they want. Another RINO (Republican in name only). I think he is like Arnold Schwarzenegger and George W. Bush. His track record shows he is not a true conservative and will abandon us when elected. I like Romney. I know he has changed his mind on some issues but he has the character to be the man we need and lead our country away from the socialism we are slowly embracing.
- Bob Rudy, Gilford

I'm in full agreement with your endorsement of John McCain. He's the only candidate who says what he means and means what he says. He's come around on the immigration issue and he doesn't make policy based upon which way the wind is blowing. As far as I'm concerend, Mitt Romney is the Republican version of Hillary Clinton; he panders to voters and only cares about gaining power.

By the way, my son is a cadet at West Point. McCain is the only candidate I would trust to think about the troops and the families before committing our military to action.

I live in NJ now but I spent 8 years going to school in NH. I hope all of you in NH have enough sense to support McCain.
- Larry, Montclair, New Jersey

So where's your Democratic endorsement? Will you be making one? The UL shouldn't be so predictably conservative, you should at least give us the impression that you're fair.
- Tim, Canaan

Florida resident but lived in Meredith NH for almost 20 years.

Illegal immigration--what McCain SAYS about it VOLUNTARILY, will decide whether I vote for him in Fl primary. I agree with everything you say about McCain's unique character and ability to lead from integrity. BUT illegal immigration, our disgraceful border situation, trumps all for me.

So far, all I've heard him say, in a rather petulant tone, is:

"I got the message!!" and

"I'll BUILD that g.d. wall!"

I need more. Acknowledgment that immigration policy isn't broken, it was sabotaged by both parties. Honesty and integrity he's used on Iraq issue needs to be heard on immigration. He's been wrong on this issue -- I need up front discussion NOT petulant response to voter questions.

maggy

P.S. Not part of word count. I'm such a junkie I'm traveling to NH on the 30th to spend my (maybe nh's?) last primary there--I'm 87. I had a verbal engagement over trade with McCain during 2000 primary, and I voted for him in that primary he won even though he's still obtuse about our trade deficit. But THIS time, if I don't see a FORTHCOMING approach to immigration (not grudging defensiveness) I WON'T vote for him in Florida.
- maggy simony, cape canaveral FL

Senator Clinton is running new ads touting a kinder, gentler Hillary. She has trotted out her mom and daughter and personal friends to affirm that she is indeed human like us ordinaries--not the frigid power-lusting pushy female of Clinton legend, but a loving daughter and mother who, Mom says, "has empathy for other people's unfortunate circumstances.”

How true the new Hillary? Before her image makeover Clinton would stress her “toughness.” Close to the truth, but “bullying aggressiveness” would be closer. Clinton is the only Democratic presidential candidate rattle Bush's saber at Iran by voting in Congress to brand an Iranian institution a "terrorist organization." This from a woman who believes that Bush's war of aggression against Iraq and her husband's bombing a Sudanese pharmaceutical plant, civilian targets in Serbia, or a restaurant in Baghdad were not terrorist acts. She has also threatened to bomb Iran if it doesn't do what she and Bush want. We need “to keep all options on the table,” says she. And the women and children of Palestine? Clinton used to be friendly to Palestinian needs, but that all changed when she decided to become a Senator from New York. Not much empathy there any more—she makes Dick Cheney look like Mary Poppins when it comes to supporting Israeli militarism.

Ah, gentle Hillary. No doubt she cares deeply about the hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children starved to death with help from hubbie's oil embargo in the 1990s. Surely she wrings her hands daily over the Iraqi women and girls raped and murdered amidst the chaos wrought by the Bush invasion she cheered. And just imagine Hillary's crocodile tears back in '92 when no-clemency Governor Bill enlivened his New Hampshire primary campaign by flying back to Arkansas to witness the execution of a retarded Ricky Ray Rector.

Once a Wal-Mart Board member, Hillary will continue to export jobs and depress wages, then pose cynically as the champion of the abused. That's her record. “Empathy” my foot. The famously phony Hillary cackle gives the truer picture.
- Dennis McNamee, Lee

At least the UL is upfront and directly tells us who they endorse...that's a fair measure of honesty that you don't often get from any media outlet. But John McCain...has any major politician waffled on issues more than he has? Is he truly a success story? What significant impact has he truly had in Washington? Granted, the other GOP choices are entirely underwhelming, but this endorsement of John McCain simply shows how marginalized the opinions of the "political elite" in New Hampshire are. UL, please try to avoid being eccentric, out of touch, old-fashioned and narrow-minded New Englanders, okay? Just because he has his military service background from VietNam, that's not enough of a reason to endorse him for the presidency. Finally, one more issue with this...did you take a poll of local residents to see who we would endorse? Personally, I am going to vote for Hillary. Things were terrific economically and in many other ways during the Clinton administration, I'd like to see a return to those days! Then we had fiscal responsibility in the government, such a novel idea (an unknown idea for the GOP), focus on education and healthcare, investment in new technologies instead of in the fossil fuel and military industries. New Hampshire experienced tremendous job and economic growth during the Clinton administration. Bring more of that on! John McCain...where's his track record?
- Janine Young, Manchester, NH

It saddens me that a fine newspaper like the Union Leader would endorse a person that backed up Bush's call for the invasion and war in Iraq. How many innocent people have died because it? Your endorsement is inhumane, if not shameful.
- Christopher I. Ivanyi, West Lebanon

Finally! A Newspaper(U.L.) that can look at the big picture instead of the wallet size and realize : though we might not agree with Senator McCain 100% on all the issues, and we may have differences of opinion with McCain in regards to CFR or Immigration (he’s already stated he will secure the borders-he heard the American people loud and clear). John McCain is America’s best chance at uniting this extremely divided Congress. No other Presidential Candidate (either party) will be able to reach across the isle like McCain. We must elect someone who can break the gridlock in Congress. Other-wise, four more years of nothing getting done (like now). This Presidential Election will decide the future of not only this generation, but our children’s generation as well. America has never looked so foolish; we need to restore Integrity and Honor in Congress. We must elect a President who has Foreign Policy experience and can lead America from day one; that would be John McCain.
- Marie Pomquet, virginia beach-virginia

Go McCain. Outstanding choice U.L on endorsing the best candidate the Republican Party will be able to field to defeat either of the two Democrats in 2008.

Facts are what they are, hard conservatism isn't so hot with the majority of Americans right now, so a more centrist candidate (who still upholds Conservative values) will be the most successful. John McCain is the only one with the background, experience and forward thinking to not only beat the Democrats hands down, but become the great president we so desperately need.

Foreign policy will be at a premium immediately in the next presidency - who else has the experience and right policy mix to get the job done there? Great choice, thank you and Semper Fi.
- Trevor - U.S Marines, Cleveland Ohio

I agree. I remember when we could have had a choice between Bill Bradley and John McCain for President. Instead, we got Bush v. Gore. I don't see any good democrats this time around, but we can at least put McCain back in the running over the likes of Huckabee and Romney.
- Chris Warner, Newbury

If we want our politicians to stop lying to us, then we need to elect leaders that aren't going to just say what they think we want to hear. I want politicians who will be honest and principled, and it is so hard to find one in either party! I think McCain has the character we so desperately need in Washington, and I truly hope more conservatives and moderates will begin to see past one or two issues where they might disagree with him and look at what is really important - character and experience!
- Charles, Bourbonnais, IL

Assuming UL was only going to endorse a "viable" candidate, unfortunately we're probably only looking at McCain, Romney and Guiliani. (Huckabee is doing well in IA, but even if here to win IA and NH, could he win the nomination?) Anyway, of the three, McCain is the most honorable and principled. Romney is too much a businessman who flip flops when it is convenient and is not hesitant about throwing people under the bus - without compassion - if it serves his personal amibitions. Guiliani is a liberal and more of a pro Israel hawk than even McCain. Of the three, I'd probably go with McCain but instead of doing that, I've decided to either sit it out or vote for Hunter or Paul or Huckabee. I'll probably sit it out. It doesn't matter anymore; the country's lost. I was with Buchanan, but it's a different country now.
- Ned, Derry

John McCain is respectable, and while I certainly commend his stands against issues such as torture and farm subsidies, he has become just another politician who sold his soul for votes. McCain-Fiengold, Immigration reform, Iraq.... he's on the wrong side of too many issues for me to support him, and some of those stands seem to be motivated by political expedience rather than a grounded moral conviction. Only one candidate has truly stood up to politics as usual in Washington, and is winning the support of Americans everywhere as a result, and that candidate is Ron Paul. Dr. Paul is the true constitutionalist and political maverick that John McCain tries to be. I hope all UL readers examine the records of both of these men and draw your own conclusion. Only one walks the walk %100 of the time. Ron Paul in 2008!
- Kevin Olson, Nashua NH

I want to thank you for endorsing John McCain for President.
Having lived in Arizona for a number of years I think he is the best candidate for president.
Before we moved here in 1999 we lived in Nashua for 6 years. I loved your state and especially the excitment of the 1996 primary.
- virginia robertson, sun city west, az

Pro-life used to mean pro every life. John McCain does not fit that definition. He favors abortion for some women. Just like President Bush. And when asked what he would do to stop abortion he had no ideas. That does not sound like a man who truly wants to save lives to me.
- Lee Button, Epsom,

You can't call McCain to the mat on campaign finance reform on the basis of a ridiculous nonsensical free speech claim. Organizations and corporations are not citizens with rights, and their advertisements should not be protected speech. If there is an element of free speech involved, it must be weighed against any interference with the free speech rights of individuals, which it challenges. In this case the greater good should prevail, and that is the right of citizens to not be pounded with professionally produced corporate lies. Why would anyone want to dilute the value of free speech by including corporations? Craziness!
- Theresa Whitely, Conway

Regardless of my own opinion on McCain, I must say that it is extremely inappropriate for a newspaper to endorse a candidate. Your role is to present unbiased facts for the public to make their own decisions. This is indicative of the major problem with American media; you're acting as if you have been bought. Please don't contribute to the death of journalism.
- Tina, Merrimack

I really like McCain's character and his willingness to go against the party once in a while. I'm just so sick of partisan "coronations", that anyone that goes with his gut is refreshing. But it's hard for me to ignore his stance on immigration.

The more I read and hear about Huckabee, though, the more I like him. He hasn't gotten enough attention, and that really should change.
- Marc, Derry

I can't let go of his Campaign Finance reform that is Unconstitutional. The very notion that any American or group of American citizens can't exercise their right of free speech 30 - 60 days before an election is UNCONSTITUTIONAL. & McCain co-sponsered this. This disregard for the Constitution makes me question his politics. He is a war-hero and a veteran and I have the utmost respect and admiration of Mr. McCain, but I cannot support him for President.
- Mark, Candia

A newspaper should simply report the news---not become the news! You should never try to sway your readers one way or the other and disguise it as news.
- Charles, Hollis

Romney is smart enough, tough enough and young enough to win and to succeed on both domestic and forign policy. He knows how to create jobs ( he did so), turn around a debacle ( the olympics) and rein in big business making it possible for small business to compete. He created many small and medium sized businesses.

McCain could never beat Hillary. Romney can and will. Americans believe in meritocracy not dynasty. One Clinton and two Bushes are enough
- paul needham, derry

I Love McCain and believe in him. He knows what it is to suffer and he knows as well as anyone what the ravages of war can mean. I trust him and believe him to be the most honorable candidate of the bunch no matter which party. As a military wife...I know how it feels to have your loved one sent away and now feel the pains of not being able to afford gas just to go to the grocery store. Lets not even talk about the cost now of food because of it! Our Nation is in dire trouble and I believe he can offer a more realistic future and cmoe up with solutions from a more realistic understanding of all angles and circumstances. He doesn't live in a big mansion or have a lavish lifestyle. This makes him seem more reachable as a regular guy instead of appearing to be way up on some pedastal, self removed from the average citizen. He is not some Blow-hard that likes to hear himself talk...he is one of "us". I love, admire, and respect him for his moral standing, his lifetime of service and his understanding of his country and it's situation. GOD BLESS HIM & GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!!!!!
- P. Hairston, Tehachapi

Thank you for endorsing an honest, wise person who sticks to his values, and truly cares for the American People. He is the only adult on both the right and the left ticket. He is the only person who can defeat Hillary or Obama.
- cecilia Morales, Buckeye Az.

Senator McCain is, without a doubt, a true American hero and I have always respected and admired him. That said, let's review: McCain/Feingold campaign finance "reform," the "Gang of 14," McCain/Kennedy immigration "reform," amnesty that supposedly isn't amnesty--but really is. John McCain is NOT the most conservative candidate in this race. Period. His time came and went in 2000 and he lost his credibility in this race when he stood arm-in-arm with Teddy Kennedy to hype his immigration bill. You know...the same one that caused people all over this country to send the Capitol switchboard into meltdown. He should rename his bus yet again from "The Straight Talk Express" to the "Compromise Coach" to more accurately reflect his recent tendencies.
- William Smith, Manchester, NH

The Union Leader must have a screw loose to endorse McCain for President. Bush was bad enough but wait until you see what McCain will do to this country if elected.
- Bill, Tuftonboro

A big disappointment!, John McCain brought us the disaster of McCain-Feingold. He is also responsible for the push for "comprehensive reform" aka amnesty for illegals.
While he may be right on the war (after all did we learn nothing from Vietnam, go in with overwhelming force and stay to win); Mr. McCain is wrong in so many of the issues that conservatives support. He is the media darling for the left and that should speak volumes. I think he means well but there are far better choices. I am disappointed that Huckabee is not gettting the support and press that he deserves. When people take the time to see him speak, he is clearly the right man for the job.
I think we should start to look at the people who best represetn our values rather than going with the "who can win" mantra. When we ignore the people who are a better fit in favor of people with more cash on hand or better press, we only cheapen our democracy. We should not allow the appeal of the "popular dogma" to influence our votes. Huckabee has more money than McCain but you would never know it given the coverage. Having the Union Leader support McCain is a disappointment but I do encourage people to ignore the "go with the pack" mentality. Do your own homework, go to the candidates events. Listen and ask questions (Mr. McCain did take my question on illegal immigration so while I disagree with him, I do respect him).

Our vote certainly should begin with respect as character is the most important thing we want in a president; but character alone is not enough, he must represent out view too.

we in NH have a great opportunity. Please go out and listen to these candidates and choose the one who best represents your views. From what I can tell, they all appear to be honorable. We have big challenges ahead, we need a president who can deal with the key issues of our times: the economy, the energy crisis, illegal immigration, and the war on terror.
- Dennis KING, merrimack

I like McCain and would vote for him. I'm not sure however if he will win the nomination. because he says it the way it is, it has brought him enemies from the republican side of the aisle
- Steve, Biddeford, Maine

The man who wants amnesty for illegals as my leader, No thank you.
- Billy Coffey, Andover

Congrats, UL! You've gotten this one right! It's unfortunate that left-leaning networks and right leaning Fox News won't give this great American his due. He is by far the most experienced and qualified. He also can realistically work across the aisle. Most importantly, he has character, an all too uncommon trait in our politicians today. Here is a man who will stand by his convictions, even if it costs him the Presidency. I feel I can put my faith in someone who stands by his convictions, especially when they are inconvenient, instead of consulting the latest polls to decide where he should stand.
- Matt DeBarbieri, Vernon, NJ

I expect to read today that the offices of the Union Leader were taken over by aliens.

Senator Fred Thompson is the genuine conservative choice for President.
- Marge Hallyburton, Lyndeborough

I supported Sen.McCain in 2000, I have met the man and I served in the Navy under his dad. In my opinion he is the only man running totally qualified from day one to run this country in time of war.
He has the respect of the military, unlike clinton, and as a former military guy he is big picture oriented.
We need someone who will stand up to both our enemies abroad and the ones at home looking to pick our pockets whether it be for social engineering or corporate pork. Mccain has a history of fighting special interests on behalf of all of us.
This country is at a tipping point, any dem will bring the economy to a halt and sell us out to our enemies, McCain is the only one who can return us to fiscal sanity and protect our way of life.
The UL is to be applauded for their sound choice.
- Richard W Simon, Urbanna,va

I really hate the term "pro-life." I'm a Republican but I will not be voting for McCain simply because of this "pro-life" issue. Neither McCain, or any of the rest of the hard right are "pro-life." Why? Because they are certainly not "pro" the "life" of the woman who is pregnant. They're just *fine* with her risking *her* life to grow a bunch of fetal cells into what might, possibly, if everything-works-out-just-right, be a baby.

Yeah, go ahead, care about the life of a blob of cells more than you care about the life of the woman carrying them. But please: don't call yourself "pro-life" because you're not. Rather, call yourselves "pro-slavery" because forcing a woman to do something with her body that she doesn't want to do, pretty much adds up to that.

Sorry McCain, I'd rather vote for Romney, who'll let *me* decide whether or not I want to risk my life for another.
- Leah, Nashua

As most of you know by now, The Union Leader (New Hampshire's only statewide newspaper) has endorsed John McCain in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary to be held on January 8, 2007.

This was a mistake.

While the military record of Senator McCain is beyond approach, his liberal views on immigration make this a bad choice. While he continues to talk about border and homeland security, at the same time he favors citizenship for those illegally in this country. The vast majority of Americans have already made their views known on immigration but Senator McCain refuses to listen and continues to be out of touch with America on this issue.

The Union Leader made an error in endorsing Senator McCain. The correct choice would have been Senator Thompson.

In my opinion Senator Thompson did not get the endorsement because he is running a non-traditional campaign. He is going to the people, not the political "big wigs" in New Hampshire and other states. He is campaigning his way and putting forth solutions to problems (including immigration) that is making established politicians nervous.

I am disappointed that Senator Thompson hasn't been in New Hampshire as much as other candidates. I also realize there are 49 other states that deserve his time and attention as well.

The Union Leader has penalized Senator Thompson for his absence in New Hampshire. We should show the New Hampshire political establishment that we support a candidate that puts American citizens before illegal immigrants and politics as usual.

Support Senator Fred Thompson in the New Hampshire Presidential Primary.
- Doug Hogue, Merrimack

McCain's a useful idiot for the left. It's entirely foreseeable that he would appeal to the UL. Misery love company.
- Leo Paradis, Canterbury

An independent voter myself, I supported McCain in 2000, and will do so this year, pulling a Republican ballot in the Missouri primary. I've disagreed with him on several issues, but never questioned his integrity. The other so-called top echelon candidates (Guiliani, Clinton) will only serve to further divide this nation should they be elected. This country is supposed to be a meritocracy; let's end the Bush-Clinton dynasty, where this nation picks a name and not a man to lead us. Senator McCain is truly the only man running who I would be proud to call my president. And this would be the first time in my life I could honesty say that.
- John W. Youngblood, Richwoods, MO

Shame! What a shame to squander what may be the peoples’ best chance to wrench the election out of the grasp of the Tweedledee and Tweedledum Rep and Dem parties!
John McCain was apparently wounded more by his S&L-campaign-contribution scandal than his gallant sacrifice in Vietnam. He and Feingold violated their oath-of-office with campaign censorship, (i.e. Bill of Rights 1st) and the Congress and Bush played along expecting the Supreme Court to be the grownup. Tough Luck America!
We need the clear adherence to our founding principles that Ron Paul offers. The plain spoken, humble “Champion of the Constitution” is the clear choice to defeat the ‘wicked witch of Socialism’ next November.
I hope and pray the electorate (including many who have avoided least-of-evils elections of recent years) are wiser than the UL has been today.
This primary and election must be about the size and role of the US government, before it swallows our livelihoods and lives.
Ed Ware
Weare
- Ed Ware, weare

Too right you are UL! John McCain is exactly the man to lead this nation come Jan 2009. And he's the guy to beat Clinton in 2008. Giuliani's chances are deteriorating fast; Romney will be painted in the same light as John Kerry. Sen. McCain has character, and a propensity for at least ALWAYS TRYING to do what he thinks is right for the country. I plead to New Hampshire to vote in the primary for McCain.
- Evan, Lubbock, TX

John McCain is the only candidate of either party who can be taken seriously regarding wasteful, pork-barrel Washington spending. The profligate spending in Washington is obscene, particularly in light of the record revenue that we US taxpayers pour into Washington.

This is the primary reason why I support John McCain.
- Patrick, Denver, CO

I used to say that the Union Leader was the best newspaper in the United States bar none. Very few papers have given its readers a better opportunity to voice their opinions over the years than the union leader. William and Nacky Loeb are two of my favorite people of all time who wrote the greatest editorials and never pulled any punches when it came time to criticizing our elected officials when they were wrong. Senator McCain recently has been on a mission to try to silence groups of people that would criticize our elected leaders. I could never imagine William Loeb 's Union Leader siding with someone who has tirelessly tried to stifle free speech. I lived in Massachusetts for many years before moving to Arizona. I have watched Senator McCain cross the isle to side with Ted Kennnedy so many times since I have lived here that I often think Kennedy is still my Senator. You have made a poor decision.
- Nicholas Collatos, Ash Fork, Arizona

BWHAHAHAHAH! John McCain? Has the UL lost its freaking mind? He's a RINO and always has been. He lost the republican base a long time ago and has no hope of winning here in NH or elsewhere. Put the crack pipe down UL editors, you people are totally out of control.
- Bob Hoskins, Derry

Good call UL. Senator McCain understands the real world. He is pragmatic. This time in our history calls for sensible leadership and an even-handed approach. Sen. McCain is leadership incarnate. The Ron Paul folks are on the rampage as they see the end for their guy in NH. Paul is such a good Reagan Republican his first US mail piece misspelled president's Reagan's name. Romney is an opportunist on important social issues. Trust is the first virtue for the president and Romney should know that. McCain has my vote!
- Daniel Steinbach, Milton NH

Similar to the UL and many of his supporters, I certainly don't agree with McCain on certain issues. But we are not supposed to agree with candidates on every issue, we but should believe in their fundamental values, ability to lead, defend the nation, and make prudent decisions.

With Americans getting weary of sythetic candidates, I think McCain's authenticity will begin to translate with more voters.

And with Hillary consistently racking up campaign scandals on a weekly basis, I'm hoping that voters will start to see what they can expect from her if she wins.
- Dave H, Rye, NH

Great UL editorial. And Bill, there will be no "read my lips" speech. That is what makes John McCain a leader and what many voters most respect about him.
- Nancy, Lebanon NH

I intend to vote For John McCain in the Florida primary. I'm a conservative and have many times cursed him under my breath. But at the end of the day.... he is the most consistent, and conservative candidate running for Republicans.
- Matt Strenth, Tallahassee, Fl

With this pick, the Union Leader joins the neo-con goose-steppers in the march toward world fascism . How can anyone favor McCain over Ron Paul is beyond me. Dr. Paul's Constitutional Freedom, Prosperity, and Peace platform should trump the loss of individual freedom, a declining US dollar, and undeclared wars. All things favored and voted for by McCain. Wake-up America, we have lost our freedom.
- Tom, Sandpoint, Idaho

I agree UL. John McCain is the right call.

As an Registered Independent I'm not influenced by party pressure, but rather focus on the candidate. Without a doubt, John McCain is the candidate with the stature and character that I want to be my leader for the next four years. Can you imagine him being intimidated by his Vice President or Secretary of Defense, or having a sexual affair with his interns? No, as the guy says, "Character Counts.", and McCain has it in spades.

And, another reason I'll vote for him is that I'm confident that he is motivated by a sincere desire to do what's right for the nation, even if it's something with which I might not agree.
- Larry Marshall, Oceanside, California

Senator John S McCain's middle name is not 'sacrifice' but it ought to be. My senator loves sacrifice, especially the sacrifice of American children. During his 2000 presidential campaign, (which was BEFORE 9-11), McCain insisted that he could inspire the American people to causes 'greater than their own self-interest'. What he meant by this was that he wanted to start a war somewhere. And he still wants to. Let's hope NH voters are smart enough NOT to give the blood of America's children to what Senator McCain deems a greater cause.
- David Wooten, Chandler, AZ

Thank you UL! You have restored my confidence in the media. I am as well a non-classifiable voter but I love my country. In fact the only person i've ever met that loves America more is John McCain. We as the public would be making a huge error if we did not elect him as president.
- Nathan Merrill, Waterloo, Ia

What a shame any American would choose anyone over John Mcaain! Wish I had a dollar for everytime a candidate said, "I agree with Senator Mccain." Or "If I wasn't running I would be supporting Mccain." And the ol "Senator Mccain is right about that." I don't care about the immigration mistake. No one is perfect. At least he learned and moved on. Why? because he listens to the people. Romney bad! Mccain good!!
- Robert Miranda, Tucson, AZ.

I am a life-long Democrat and an occasional ticket splitter. I have been saying for a year that if comes down to Clinton v McCain (& only McCain) I will truly be torn. My opinion of Hillary drops everyday.

The UL is spot on. John McCain has enormous integrity. He knows that the piles of money in politics is decimating our republic. He knows that it is impossible to march 15,000,000 illegals back across the border ( I support the wall) and he knows that progress on the daunting problems we face cannot happen without bipartisan support.

A congress controlled by the Democrats and a McCain presidency may be the ideal situation for our deeply divided nation. The radical right wing will not admit that their 40-year rise has ended for now. They elected their own and the result was disaster.

Despite their primary-season attempts to out Bush Bush, Rudy & Mitt are moderates and neither has the experience or the guts to take the unpopular positions that the US needs to recover it's reputation abroad and to build a national consensus at home to make us one nation again.
- John Hatch, Philadelphia, PA

McCain is right for America.

Honesty and integrity is what we need in a President. Everyone knows where he stands on issues. He is not trying to buy votes or change his positions whenever there is a political season.

GREAT Endorsement UL!
- Sam obanski, Manchester, NH

McCain is hardly an idealist of any sort. He is a warmongering neocon. His closest brush with idealism is his unabashed support for the authoritarian police state that he is helping to usher into existence.

He created the anti-free speech McCain-Feingold bill. He voted FOR the bill-of-rights stealing PATRIOT I & II. He voted FOR TORTURE in the Military Commissions Act of 2006, and he voted FOR the Warner Defense Authorization Act of which completes the view that he is totally against the constitution, and the people of the US.
- Neil Alexander, Grantham

The Union Leader has lost all credibility. How can this paper go from endorsing Pat Buchanan in the past and all that he stood for and now endorse one of the biggest Establishment’s Men ever in politics? McCain is one of the most arrogant and volatile candidates that I have ever watched. He is a globalist / one worlder and CFR man. Being a POW doesn’t given anyone an automatic superiority on a subject matter. There are just as many former POW’s that disagree with McCain. To me he is the Manchurian Candidate.
- Robert Sharpe, Houston, TX

Go McCain! Great call on the endorsement. It's nice to have a true conservative candidate that doesn't change his positions depending on public opinion or election cycles.
Make those pork-barrel spenders famous John!
- Dave, Brockton, MA

I'm not thrilled with any of the Republican candidates. McCain alternately pleases and angers me, like most of them do. But let's face it - any Republican is better than any Democrat, in particular the loathsome Hillary Clinton. Regardless of how I decide to vote in the primary, come next November I will be voting for whomever the Republicans nominate to run against Hillary Clinton, and I will do so with relish.
- Tom, Campton

A wise MUL choice. I disagreed with McCain on immagration bill, however he was at least trying to solve the problem. Its galling that most Republican presidentail candidates have staked out a solution that is so far right that it will not pass Congress and maintain the intolerable status quo. McCain is a center right pragmatist who gets things done which is what the country needs.
- David, Bedford, NH

Thank You U.L., and well said.

Independents, John McCain needs you. Please come out and vote in the Republican Primary. The Democratic primary offers you two poor choices, a deceitful and polarizing Hillary, or an inexperienced Obama. Our country can afford neither. Please do as you did in 2000, come out and support the candidate with character, conviction, and experience. Please, come out and vote for John McCain in the Republican primary.

- Stephen Erickson, Kensington

UL... THANK YOU!!! As a service member that is heading into harms way I am glad that you are supporting John McCain.

His hard work on immigration and ethics reform are serious challanges that none of the other candidates have ever addressed on a national level.

Keep up the good work John!
- Mike H, Afghanistan bound

Thank you for your endorsement of John McCain , reminding me why I supported him in 2000' Up until now I was backing Rudy thinking he was the only one who could beat Hillary. Now I realize I want to vote for a person I would be proud to have as our President. That person is John McCain.
- Mike Corcoran, Minneapolis

With your McCain endorsement McQuaid you once again show you are in the pocket of the neo-conservatives. Quady ole boy... you are just trying to be popular with the WRONG PEOPLE! McCains heated endorsement of the Immigration Bill should scare us all!
I demand that you McQuaid speak to McCain's support of the Immigration bill. Let me be blunt with you McQuaid... I am very livid at you on this endorsement. I am tired of your blatant arrogance! You are not a real conservaitve you filthy neo-con.... go on and hug the neo-con trotskyites!
- Bayard Sheldon, Meredith

Time and again, Senator McCain has proven that he will stand up for his beliefs, stand up for the American soldiers and Stand up for the United States. I was a McCain supporter before this article but it only fills me with pride for the Senator to see the UL endorsing him for President.
- Derek Traquair, Boston

As a Wildlife Biologist who worked on the grizzly bear DNA project in Montana that McCain bashes in his commercial, I am disappointed in the UL's choice. McCain feels that money spent on a project to aid in protection of an endangered species, is poor government spending. Without this spending these important species have less chance of survival than we are giving them now. The current administration already has cut spending that has left biologists with their hands tied. It is impossible for us to do our jobs without this money. If McCain would like to save enough money to make a difference he should end the useless war in Iraq. 3 million dollars to aid in grizzly bear survival is a drop in the bucket compared to a few billion dollars a week!
- Ben, Blacksburg, VA

I'm waiting for the 'Read my lips' speech from McCain. It will be interesting to see if we can be fooled again.
- Bill, Tuftonboro

I have always backed McCain, but I began to find the argument that Guiliani would more likely beat Clinton compelling...UNTIL THE DEBATES. It simply has to be McCain. Rudy is coming off positively fascistic and Hillary is the Social Worker pounding on your front door. If you want the Village away from your kids and the fascists away from your liberties, well it's McCain. The McCain Fiengold is exactly why I like McCain. Big Pharma et al all exploit those 60 days, but ordinary people like us, well we ain't got millions to waste.
- James Carmine, Pittsburgh

For me, the argument boils down to this: Nominate John McCain or return the Clintons to a White House of ill repute.
- Franklin Delano Harden, Luray, Virginia

McCain? Are you guys at the UL kidding us? He called the Bush tax cuts “gimmicks”; He sponsored McCain-Feingold (Union Leader editorial, March 5, 2007 “McCain is for small government except when he isn't. And on the most important civic activity in a republic - choosing who governs us - he shows again that he is for big government dictates and against personal freedom.”); He sponsored the McCain-Kennedy Amnesty Bill; He would tie the hands of those who are protecting us from terrorists, and incorrectly defines the word “torture”; He voted against preserving an up-or-down vote in the senate for judicial nominees without the threat of filibusters; He supported the Kyoto Treaty; He’s careful to be publicly pro-life in 2007, but in the 2000 campaign, McCain consistently spouted pro-Roe v Wade rhetoric to liberal media outlets; and he supported taxpayer funded embryonic stem cell research (HR 810.)
- Stephen, Manchester NH

Good call, UL. I think McCain-Feingold was a mistake, but an honest one. And even McCain admits that his immigration policy was a mistake. But McCain has principles and character. For those who want him to take an anti-tax pledge, I say please... Taking a pledge is too easy. Romney also pledged to "never waver" from his pro-choice position, and 5 years later, look where we are. McCain opposed the Bush tax cuts for a simple reason: there was no cut in spending. Once again, McCain was right, and the "leadership" in the Republican party is who was wrong. I love lower taxes, of course, but not if we just run up a debit. John McCain is the man to lead this country forward!
- Derek, Bow

If this Republican party does not nominate the ONLY real American hero it has in its ranks, will stop at the point of breaking. Based on the colossal mistakes already made, I am amazed how Republicans constantly seem to be working against themselves. John McCain is the only one who can make them alive again. Learn from a newspaper how to be insightful!!!
- Altin, Grosse Pointe, MI

I was in the US Coast Guard stationed in Portsmouth Harbor, NH. I love it back there. Mr. McQuaid, I assure you that if you lived in SoCal as I do you would be singing a different tune about McCain. Wherever I go in this entire area(SoCal) it is like a third world country. I go to the local chain restaurant (McDee's) and half the staff doesn't speak english. Is this America? I don't know anymore! I roll down my window and I hear "non-english" music blasting away with impunity. McCain is anti-american and an insult to every soldier that has fought defending our country. Do you think it would be any different where you live? You are quite ignorant on this subject. McCain-no way!
- John Emott, Victorville,Ca (The New Mexico!)

As an American living overseas I want to see us elect a President who will command respect around the world. McCain will command this respect, and the UL is making the right endorsement. Besides hes the ONLY candidate with any chance of beating Clinton or Obama.
- Matt Tordoff, London England

If he were to be elected, make sure you have a shotgun above your door as our ancestors did, because MS-13, the "Z" armies and the Reconquistas will be pouring across the borders and at your door, looking to sell you heroin or steal your stuff so they can buy more!
- Mark Edan, Hudson

Mitt Romney for President!

But if not, ok, McCain will do. The Union Leader does make some pretty good points. Actually, other than his horrible position on illegal immigration, McCain would do a pretty good job of uniting the Republican coalition. But so would Romney - other than the problem he might face with anti-Mormon religious bigots. I must admit though, McCain has held strong to his beliefs. And I say that as a conservative from Arizona, where often times McCain is anathema.
- Tyler Mott, Tucson, Arizona

Union Leader: No More,

As a former union leader paperboy, in the 50s, on the corner of Hanover and Elm Street, your shameful endorsement of John McCain brings me to tears for Manchester was the most wholesome city to grow up in with no crime, no racial problems and no religious animosities. Big government is destroying Manchester and the state of New Hampshire.
The mainstream media is not the gatekeepers of the news anymore for the Internet is, exposing the truth to the world. As a conservative Republican, I patriotically endorse Dr. Ron Paul, with his beliefs in the U.S. Constitution, Bill of Rights and free speech, how could “We The People” go wrong? The best thing a newspaper could do to stay in business is, tell the truth.
- Jerry, Santa Ana, Ca.

John McCain is simply holding on to fame. He seems to think his military service puts him above everyone in terms of leadership. In my view, I would rather have a candidate who has a 100% voting record according to what he believes in, and that man is Ron Paul. Never has he voted to increase taxes, wants to end the war, and the ONLY candidate who has any idea of our economic turmoil we are headed in.
- Jason Ebauch, Exeter New Hampshire

You guys should have deliberated a bit longer before endorsing McCain.

(1) You say, "McCain can be trusted to make informed decisions based on the best interests of his country, come hell or high water." But just a second earlier, you said you do not agree with him on some issues.

Are you suggesting that your newspaper does not make "informed decisions based on the best interests" of the country? Surely not.

2. You need to give more weight to McCain's positon on illegal immigration. Maybe you don't see the problems with illegal immigration, but I do, here in California. Trust me: You do not want the problems we have. McCain's stand on the issue is neither informed not in the best interests of the country. And his tactics in debating the issue are uncivilized. He's a bully, pure and simple.

3. McCain's position on terrorist interrogations is really troubling. It's one thing for him to stand on principle, but it's quite another for him to expect me to be willing to die because he is so high-minded. He's living in another world.

4. McCain's "independence" in the past indicates that he would not be inclined to work with dissenters and move the country forward. For McCain, it's either my way or the highway. That's been his inclination in the past, and there's no reason to believe he would change if elected president.

5. On his campaign finance "reforms," he has undermined free speech. Shouldn't a newspaper be for free speech?

You guys really ought to re-evaluate your endorsement. McCain is one of the least desirable candidates.
- George Moore, Merced, Calif.

I am pleased to see the UL has endorsed John McCain. He is a principled conservative, with tremendous foreign policy experience. He is just what this country needs, and the best candidate to beat the democratic nominee.
- John W, Penacook

Thank you for taking the time to learn who is the best candidate, rather than listening to the rhetoric from big money on both sides. While I appreciate the criticism of McCain-Feingold, I see it as pro-Free Speech rather than anti-Free Speech. If big money is allowed to control the debate, then the bloggers and YouTube voices would be drowned out by slick Madison-Avenue corporate voices. And regarding immigration, there is benefit both in securing our borders and being compassionate toward our fellow men and women. WWJD. Thanks again.
- Jim Milton, Tulsa, Oklahoma

McCain saved the United States in Iraq
- Emmet, Birmingham, AL

What a difference eight years makes! In 2000 you said of John McCain that he was "the most liberal guy on the Republican side." I guess your endorsement of McCain for 2008 tells us more about the present status of the Republican Party than anything else!

If McCain "Is the Man", then let me tell you that I'll be staying home come next November. I'm already staying home for the primary.
- Matthew A. Doyle, Lancaster, NH

Wow. John McCain. Who would have thought we'd live to see the day when the Union Leader would support a liberal Democrat for the Republican nomination. It seems like the transformation of New Hampshire into a county of Massachusetts is now complete.

Fred Thompson is one of the few real conservatives running in this cycle. Most of those that do not support him seem to be unable to forgive him for not voting to solidly to get rid of Clinton during the Senate hearings. Republicans that continue obsess over either Clinton are going to ensure that we end up with another 'electable' candidate like Bob Dole.

I suggest conservatives take a close look at Fred's positions on the issues. Once they do, I don't think they will need a paper to tell them who to vote for -- Fred is the obvious choice.
- Jeffrey Creem, Nashua, NH

It looks like the Union Leader is trying to keep "I am not a constitutional Scholar" Mcain in the top four this election.
Brian
- Brian fellers, Grafton NH

John McCain is indeed an honorable man; one can't help but like and response him. I don't know if I can get past his immigration views.

Of all the GOP candidates, McCain is the man I most want to vote for - but I don't know that I can.
- Robert T, Kansas City, MO

As a former resident of New Hampshire my entire life, I keep informed on my State by reading the Union Leader on line. I think Joe McQuaid has picked a loser in John McCain. Regardless of McCann's credentials, the Republican candidate MUST be the one who can beat Hillary Clinton. McCain, of all the republican candidates, has the least chance of accomplishing that.I believe that Joe McQuaid has hung his hat on a fallen star.

As a military member stationed overseas, John McCain is my choice to lead us for the next four years. As a man who lives his life guided by principal, he is the best choice for our country.

We must continue to oppose those that would destroy our way of life. John McCain is the man.
- Mike Hurley, US MILITARY overseas

The next President of the United States will have a moral compass that is always in tune with the values and ideals upon which our nation was founded.
The next President of the United States will understand that good and thinking people can disagree on issues of import to our nation, seek out their goodness, and implement effective and workable solutions to the benefit of our nation.
The next President of the United States will understand the important role this nation plays in our small world and restore the confidence and hope America has meant to so many.

The next President of the United States will be John McCain.
- Maureen Heard, Derry, NH

John McCain is an American hero, and he certainly is the best the Republicans have to offer. But John McCain was also an American hero the last time he ran for President when he opposed deficits and opposed the REPUBLICAN TAX RATE CUT GIMMICKS that reduced revenues below the Republican controlled Congressionally authorized expenditure. He has flip flopped on that position and voted for tax rat cut gimmicks that produced radical increases in our federal debt, and wasted our hard earned tax money on interest on that debt. His support for the REPUBLICAN INTEREST EXPENSE PORK PROGRAM, where much of that interest expense is paid to COMMUNIST CHINA, should give all of us who supported him last time great pause.
- Bob Jean, Northwood

McCain? Puuhhhhleazze! He is not a true conservative. As a former Newshampshirite, I used to read the Union Leader every day and still do, just online. This is one choice that truly disappoints me, as the Union Leader has always been one of the leading conservative dailies in the country. The good news? An endorsement by a newspaper does not always mean much. I got a newspaper's endorsement for public office and lost heinously anyway.
- Troy LaPlante, Selma, NC

duncan hunter is the best candidate for the job and is often overlooked. john mccain would most certainly get my vote if i had to choose between the dems or the republicans. there isnt a candidate on the democrat sied worthy of being a leader of this country. born in manchester nh i often disagree with who represents my home town and my state. at least the union leader hasnt completely let me down. mccain should distance himself from any kennedy or he is dooming himself to failure!
- kevin fletcher, loveland colorado

Voting for Senator McCain is not just about voting for someone you agree with on 100% of the issues. That's not the point. He has served our country bravely, and he has stood up for his ideals time and time again. Even when folks such as those here have pitifully attacked his character, he has stood resolute. If you don't want Hillary Clinton in the White House, John McCain is your man. If you want a great president who has the fiery passion to bring down partisanship and the establishment, John McCain is your man.
- Alex Lucas, Houston, TX

While you can criticise old John for many many things and he is a terrible choice for President, I'd like to point out in his defense that suggesting McCain is anti free speech shows ignorance of what free speech actually is, and is only a parroting of the line businesses spew that their lobbyist activities are protected "free speech." Corporations do not and should not have some right of "free speech." Free speech is for PEOPLE, not to allow businesses to spend $$ to control public opinion in their favor. This imbalances our democracy, as ordinary people can't he heard over businesses.

Typical of NH posters here on the UL, the shoot-yourself-in-the foot mindset is all about pro-corporation, anti union, pro military, anti people. When are you going to learn you shouldn't suck up to businesses?
- Taylor Redmond, Nashua

Great Choice UL! He's simply the most qualified candidate on either side of the isle. Go to one of his town hall meetings at it becomes clear he's the smartest and most prepared candidate to become president.
- Katherine Morrison, Epping

John McCain sells himself as a populist but he is not. His campaign finance reform is anti free speech. He is just another big government Republican. Any time the federal government has as much power as John McCain would grant it corporations and wealthy individuals will find a way to influence politicians in order to get favorable treatment for their interests. On the war McCain was and is wrong. He supported the Iraq War which was based on obvious lies from the Bush Administration. And now he is willing to sacrifice the lives of many more so that America saves face.
- JohnG, Concord

Never, Never, Never, Never. John McCain has sold us out on health care, campaing finance reform and the border. No other Republican candidate angers me or prompts me to campaign for others like McCain. What the hell is the author of that editorial thinking?
- steve dunn, littleton

Seriously, what's more important-- McCain-Feingold or John McCain's strong stand on the War against Terror? To me it's a no-brainer. We can live with McCain-Feingold. We can't survive as a nation by buckling under to terrorists. John McCain is the real leader on the most important issue of our time.
- Matthew Heise, Dearborn Hgts., MI

A sad day for the UL.There is a candidate out there who opposes the UN, GATT, NAFTA, NAU, CAFTA, and ICC. He has voted against regulating the Internet, The Patriot Act, the war in Iraq, the McCain-Fiengold Bill, has the radical idea of making the the government keep the SS money in the fund where it is supposed to stay, the best pro-Second Amendment supporter bar none. Who is he? Dr. Ron Paul. The UL just does not walk the talk. Shame on them.
- Stuart Smith, Orange, NH

McCain the man to lead America? Give me a break! He was against the Bush tax cuts, for amnesty, for campaign finance reform, and was seriously considered to be Kerry's VP.
- Joe B., Manchester

How can anyone disagree on John McCain's love for this country and his courage but he is but a shell of his old self. Has anyone at the UL watched the debates? He was booed emphatically by a room filled with republicans. I can not vote for a Republican that stands hand in hand with Senator Kennedy and tries to sell America a bill for amnesty of Illegal Immigrants and tell us like we are morons that it is not. This nomination is distrubing and if I had a subscription to the UL it would be cancelled today. His time has passed him by and it is sad to see this once strong and brave leader become a characture of his old self.
- michael, merrimack

I only hope thıs tıme those votıng ın the Republıcan prımarıes and those votıng ın the general electıons ın November would not mıss to vote for Senator McCaın (as they dıd faıl to vote ın suffıcıent numbers for former Senator Robert Dole back ın the 1988 Republıcan prımarıes and ın the general electıons of 1996) who I belıeve even hıs opponents agree ıs best qualıfıed to become the Presıdent of the Unıted States. Senator McCaın has the background, the personal knowledge, dedıcatıon to every cause he belıeves ın and has demonstrated a very sane and balanced mınd and thorough knowledge of the ıssues.

Barzın Samımı
- Barzın Samımı, Istanbul, Turkey

McCain led the assault on the First Amendment. He worked with Ted Kennedy to have the government regulate tobacco. Ted kennedy and John McCain tried their hand at "health care reform." Your editorial is wrong. McCain won't put the interests of the county first -- he'll put the interests of McCain first. William Loeb is rolling in his grave.
- Evan, Dumbarton, NH

New Hampshire Republicans, the decision that you are making now is not one between McCain and the other Repub contenders, it is between McCain and Hillary or Obama. The only other Republican contender with a realistic chance of winning the general is Rudy, and I am coming to believe that his disposition and skeletons are going to make that difficult, at best. (Also, note that Rudy's sleeze will tend to cancel out all of that Clinton sleeze.) Also, when it comes down to it, who do you trust more, the candidate who tells you when he disagrees with you or the candidate who, at least this year, tells you everything you want to hear? What did Reagan say? My 80% friend is not my 20% enemy. With McCain the number is in the mid to high nineties. NH, you got it right in 2000, for the sake of the conservative movement, please get it right in 08.
- Chris, Mars, PA

John McCain? I can't believe there are people who think this raving half-cocked neo-con shill would be suitable for any leadership position. Ron Paul is more to my liking.
- Lynne, CenterTuftonboro

I agree with Mr. Doherty from Pelham!
a posse ad esse Mr. McCain!
- matt, laconia

Wrong on campaign finance, wrong on border control (and he's from Arizona!!), wrong on water-boarding.

Great guy, but not my President.
- gary ellmer, Portsmouth

Oh for the days of William Loeb! McCain so wrong on immigration, free speech, and where has he been with Sen. Tom Coburn who is calling out those who spend? McCain's disposition should be considered - an angry man. And his compliments to Hillary-no not McCain for me.
- Niel Young, Laconia

Yes, John McCain. As a Massachusetts Republican voter, I do not have the honor of voting in the first primary in the 2008 Presidential election. However if I did, I would be voting for John McCain and will do so in the Massachusetts primary, February 4. Mr. McCain is admirable, respected, and is the best person to lead our nation into the next decade. He has shown leadership on important issues such as immigration, campaign finance, spending and the war on terrorism. We may not have always agreed with John McCain, but we also know that he does not placate to polls, makes difficult choices, and does not change his position based on trends as other current candidates have. It's time for the United States to have a President that will show bold proven leadership on the economy, spending, environment, energy, health care and the war on terror - its time for John McCain. NH Republicans and Independents, please give him your vote!
- John Smyth, Sudbury, MA

What a great job summing up why McCain deserves the support of the Republican party. Consistent, IDEAL-based leadership. McCain doesn't always do what I would like, but he always acts out of principle. And you are right that he is the most consistent conservative in the race. Conservatives have to stop Rudy and the only man who can do that AND beat Hillary is John McCain.
- PRE, Dallas, TX

I certainly wouldn't dispute John McCain's character or even his conservative credentials but his competence as a decision maker is another matter. The biggest tragedy of John McCain's career is that he learned all the wrong lessons from both his experience in Vietnam and our country's experience. When asked why 60,000 of our soldiers died in Vietnam he has no answer except that public opinion lost the war. What are they dieing for in Iraq? He has no answer except that defeat is unacceptable. During his senate career he has been on the wrong side of issue after issue. He has great experience but terrible judgement. A McCain presidency would be yet another tragic mistake.
- Richard Honer, Tilton

While Mr. McCain has failed in 2 policy areas of note, illegal immigration and campaign finance reform, at least he made the effort to confront and not hide from these problems. That's the sign of a leader, and I will take that in lieu of the crop of double-talkers we have in both parties. Read the polls, he is the one who performs best against the Democrats...consistently so - Go John McCain!!
- Doug Bice, New Melle, MO

McCain is a great American but his time was in 2000- Republicans had their chance and chose Bush and we all have paid a heavy price for that
- tim, gilmanton

I think McCain is an interesting choice from the UL. He certainly isn't the "straight line" republican that the Dem's are hoping to run against. I'm not sure I'll follow this lead, but we could do a lot worse, such as any of the democrats .....
- jeff, goffstown

John Open Borders Let every illegal alien in McCain is the wrong choice for President. What this country does not need is a President who will swing the immigration doors wide open for illegals to get in here and bankrupt our nation draining all out health services and breaking out laws and getting away with it. John McKennedy McCain is not the best qualified individual to be our next President in fact what we should do is build a fence around his home property and put all the illegal aliens there so that he can cater to their needs. McCain is the Republican answer to Hillary and we do not need either one of them.
- Richard L. Fortin, Manchester

I'm one of many registred Independents here in the State of NH. Am happy to see that you have chosen to endorse Senator John McCain for President.
John McCain is by far the most qualified to lead our Country, and get us out of the mess we are now in. Senator McCain, has spoken with the utmost honesty, and is not flip flopping as are so many other candidates.
God Bless America
- Andrea, Goffstown,NH

John McCain has been and is wrong on Iraq and terribly misguided on illegal immigration. He's the the last person I want to see sitting in the White House.
- Ronald O., Nashua, NH

Right on--McCain is the man. You have summed my thoughts beautifully, and I couldn't have said it better myself. Like you, I don't agree w/McCain on every issue, but he is head & shoulders better than the next best choice--for many reasons. You have to start by imagining that it is November 2008--and you are voting for the next Commander in Chief. Will you be voting for John McCain--or someone vastly less qualified? If you want McCain in November 2008 you'd better vote for him in January.

What a shame the UL has decided to run with the status quo, instead of supporting someone who is truly independent of the control of the reigning elitists.

They are instead backing someone who is not the maverick you think he is. He voted along with the wishes of our mortal enemy George Soros to restrict free speech, proposed along the lines of Robert Pastor to give amnesty to illegals, and would not rule out pre-emptive attack on Iran... He won't even take a simple anti-tax pledge that even pseudo-conservative Romney took! What kind of 'conservative' is that?

Where's Nackey when we need her? :-(
- Jane Aitken, Bedford

Thank the Lord above that you had the guts to say this. It is the God's honest truth, and hopefully my fellow Republicans and Conservatives alike will finally get this message.

I agree that John McCain should lead the U.S.A. as the next president. Simply put he who has the most to lose will work the hardest to keep it. Mr. McCain has paid the biggest price of all the candidates to be an American. He even has his own son's fighting here in Iraq. He himself fought for America and he is the only candidate that has his son's fighting too. Thats moral courage. McCain has the values needed to lead our country. Actions always follow values. Values are the building blocks of a great leader.
- Douglas Cheney, Concord, NH

Character is Number One. But what needs to be pounded into the head of every conservative in this state who may have problems with John McCain on specific issues is that: (1) the political environment for a liberal Democrat/Hillary Clinton electoral victory next year has never been so favorable; and (2) all the polling data and GOP debate performances thus far clearly demonstrate that McCain is the only candidate with the gravitas who can prevent such a grave result. Combine the above with the crises confronting us abroad and NH's pivotal position in this process, this endorsement may turn out to be the most important one your paper (or possibly any paper) has ever issued.

Yeah, Mr. "Amnesty for Illegals" is the man. NO.
- Mike R., Bedford

Predictable. Just goes to show how out of touch the Union Leader is, and how unafraid it is of hurting this country to remain idealogical. Same old same old eh? Good for you, you need to be marginalized and this should help.
- Stan Grossman, Nashua

I'm surprised to see the Union Leader endorse someone who is so anti-free speech. Remember the McCain-Feingold bill, which severely restricted speaking out about candidates for 60 days before an election? I admire the Senator for his service and bravery, and salute him for what he suffered as a POW. That doesn't make him fit to be President, though.
- Kevin, Lancaster

John McCain is the best qualified to lead this country and win the War on Terror. His character and courage has been proven over and over throughout his life. Excellent pick by the UL!
