Joseph W. McQuaid: America's choice this Tuesday

Reader comments

This presidential election comes down, as they often do, to trust. We must trust the person's competence, courage and ability to defend us from our enemies and to fight for the best economic conditions possible.

In both areas, John McCain stands head and shoulders above his rival. McCain has been tested as few men ever have, and he has never been found wanting. Barack Obama has no experience -- none. He may be the most unprepared major-party candidate ever. His own vice presidential pick says our enemies will test him quickly and severely. There is no good reason to take that chance.

Those who believe Obama's claims that he will reduce 95 percent of Americans' taxes, while he pays for near-universal health care, subsidizes clean energy, expands our military commitment in Afghanistan, adds to mass transit and highway infrastructure, etc., etc., are living in a dream world.

Fortunately, there seem to be fewer and fewer dreamers every day, as the polls tighten and people begin to really look at all the promises Obama has made.

John McCain promises us only his hard work and integrity, his experience and true grit, and a solid faith and optimism in America. In our view, that makes him the clear choice for the independent, thoughtful people of New Hampshire.

YOUR COMMENTS

When nothing else works resort to fear. What a surprise. The good news is that people are a little wiser to it this time. The sun will rise tomorrow whether McCain or Obama is elected. It is my hope, key word being hope, not fear, that Obama is the one elected tomorrow.
- Duncan Watson, Walpole

every time mccain open his mouth is full of lies, fight for me,vote for me,my friends,so tired of hearing, can he pick another words to say.His temperament got him nowhere.I voted for Obama he is genuine to his words,he is one of those ordinary person that will set down with you and listen and talk to you no matter who you are and assure you. He can connect to people. America needs "Big Change". Sarah Palin is a big mistake, she can't even answer a simple question. GO OBAMA"

everyone who uses that "separation of church and state" argument has no clue what the term actually means and what was meant when the founding fathers wrote the constitution. I suggest you read it sometime and you'll see just how full of faith in God they actually were. Separation of church and state, in its original meaning, was to prevent the state from imposing its views on the religious freedom our ancestors came here to have. It had nothing to do with keeping faith out of governing the country.

The constitution states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Both the free exercise clause and the establishment clause place restrictions on the government concerning laws they pass or interfering with religion. No restrictions are placed on religions except perhaps that a religious denomination cannot become the state religion.
- Scott, Brandon, Fl

BRAVO!! John McCain certainly is THE man for this challenging time. You said it like it is. And, yes, Obama is just too inexperienced and questionable in his judgement. You are applauded all over this country for YOUR straight talk. Thank you.
- Shirley Grahm, Springfield. OH

I love this, "Bush ran us into the ground talk". How bad do you really have it? Can't get a job? Have no medical insurance? What exactly is the problem? Will the presence of those things "fix" this country? This is the greatest nation on the planet. Period. The fact that we let our present lot in life shade our view of our country speaks volumes. We can be a selfish people.

1. We wanted a quick war in Iraq and didn't get it. Americans in general, including Congressional Democrats, were for the war too. Then we wanted out at the worst time because we couldn't bear any more bad news. The net positive is that the war actually backed the UN, which passed a multitude of resolutions that were otherwise to no avail. The execution of the war up until the surge goes on Bush, but he also made the decision to implement the surge. Is it really that bad to eradicate a horrible dictatorship and establish a democracy. I don't think so.

2. Many Americans signed up for mortgages they couldn't afford and have credit card debt piled high. We've dug our own hole with the help of a Barney Frank GSE-labelled shovel. This is not GW's fault (He tried to prevent it and history will credit him there).

3. Torture is bad, even of our enemies. Hit GW with this one. This was the single greatest moral failing of this administration. I believe Iraq would somehow not have been viewed nearly as badly had this episode (Guantanamo/Abu Ghraib) not been a part of it.

4. Wiretapping...really? Are you worried about the government listening to you as you talk baby talk to your kids or tell your spouse what your intentions are when you get home? Get real. Nobody cares about your boring life, including the government. You're not as important as you'd like to think you are.

Even if these things were all about Bush, McCain is a different human being. If you don't know that, you didn't pay attention for the last 8 years at all. If elected Obama will not singularly provide healthcare to all, he will not fix the economy and he will not strike fear in the heart of any enemy of America. He will not cool the planet, although I'm sure he's already looking to take credit for this year's cold snap. He and his Obamazoms are the only ones that believe that. A friendly Congress only feeds the delusion. McCain is under no such delusion. Reality and experience temper his ambition. A hoper and a dreamer like Obama has no such tempering and it is obvious. It will only be painfully so when we're all paying for his inexperience. By then it will be too late. I ask again, do you really have it as bad as you think you have it? What kind of change do you want and is that the kind of change Obama will provide? I think the people who are for "change" underestimate the depth and breadth of the brand of Mr. Obama's change. Be careful what you wish for.
- Ken Lowther, Omaha, NE

The Electorate shall soon know if the majority of America is in agreement with obamas racist, socialist and marxist vision for America.

Everything about obamas character, judgment, past voting record and proposed platform goes against freedom, right to bear arms, liberty, less taxation, free capitalist market, the very ideals and foundation upon which America was born.

Obama has no history of successful Gov. Leadership, corporate accomplishment or anything that would suggest he is qualified to be the POTUS. He has too many blank years not accounted for in what personal history he has stated, (since no media has bothered to check the accuracy of his heretofore (stated) life history. Why won‘t obama furnish his college transcripts, thesis, records, cost, etc.? If he was President of the Harvard Law Review, why did he not publish at least one article? Why did obama seal his birth certificate record when he went to Hawaii to visit his ailing Grandmother during the height of the campaign? Why haven’t the public heard anything more about the Grandmother since obama left after being there for one day, (long enough to seal his birth records)? Why did obama run as a far left candidate during the democrat primary (which his resume shows him to be)? But, in the GE he has run as a center candidate. He has flip-flopped on issues, ranging from changing his stance on taking public funds for the election to flipping on FISA. Obama has demonstrated his word cannot be trusted.

obama has a history of supporting a racist and a Marxist ideology. Evidence of this includes his 20 year history of sitting in a so called Christian church whose doctrine is black liberation theology, a part of which its stated purpose is to,"kill white people," by any means necessary to achieve their black power revolutionary goals. Further evidence includes obama's playing of the race card in both the primary and the GE. Both B. Clinton and McCain pointed obama out for using race-baiting language on more than one occasion. obama has the verifiable history to prove that he is the racist is this election cycle.

As a life long democrat, I do not agree with obamas platform, many are in direct conflict with the US Constitution. obamas admitted racist beliefs and recorded associations demonstrates that he lacks both character and judgment, he is not qualified to serve the USA. America shall see that there are millions of democrats who will vote country before party and join with other like-minded citizens to elect John McCain POTUS come Nov 4. Used2bdemocrat
- Bob Porter, Jacksonville, Florida

Fact: Obama opposes providing immediate medical attention to a child born of a botched abortion. He has voted 4 times against this - Do any of you know what this means? It means if a baby survives the botched abortion, it (the baby) will lie on a table and die a painful death, without any medical treatment because it will be illegal. McCain Supports a bill to protect that child.
Fact: Obama opposes appointing judges who will faithfully interpret the Constitution according to the original intent, whereas McCain supports this.
Fact: Obama opposes eliminating the inhertiance "Death Tax" on money, property, and belongings previously taxed, wheras McCain approves such bill.
I could go on and on....but People should be smart enough to research how each candidate has voted on issues and read what they have actually said. My vote goes to McCain....Just because he is a Republican does not make him like Bush.
- Pam Osborne, Rock Hill, SC

I think John McCain's lack of sound judgment in selecting Sarah Palin as his running mate, as well as his ridiculous and unamerican attempts to insinuate that Obama "pals" around with terrorists, along with his absurd claims that Obama is a Marxist or a Socialist disqualifies him from holding the highest office in the land.

Few candidates in the history of our great nation have run as sleazy and despicable a campaign as McCain has run. Totally devoid of ideas and consisting almost entirely of smears and outright lies. The decent, respectable McCain from 2000 has morphed into a demagogue who shamelessly panders to his base and brings out the worst in all those around him.

Tuesday he will be swept from the national stage in a richly deserved defeat, most likely of historic proportions. It's a shame he chose to squander his considerable legacy for a chance to be president. John McCain made a deal with the devil and came out on the short end of the stick. I have no sympathy for him whatsoever. He should have stayed true to his principles, he might have won.
- Mike Lane, Manchester

I'm not sure but I'm pretty sure that it isn't very hard to get in to Annapolis if your father and your grandfather are admirals.
- H. Nelson, Portsmouth

Anyone who votes based on religious affiliation should be deported to Iran or Saudi Arabia. Those countries govern based on religion as well you would love it there. Not one of the founding fathers believed religion should play a role in our government, and to be precise most we're against organized religion altogether. Separation of Church and State, I don't want your wacko religious views governing my life.
- Jim Branson, Manchester

Sorry - I tend to ignore editorials by illiterates who think that "criteria" is a singular noun.

G. Kinal
- George Kinal, Washington District of Columbia (NOT a state)

Debra F. - What difference does it make that John McCain graduated 3rd from the bottom in his class at the Naval Academy. Do you know how high the standards are just to gain an appointment to Annapolis?
- Hiram Ely, Chengdu, China

To Theresa Stevens: Why do you say these things!!!! I hate both sexism AND abortions--- it's possible . Please NH = give those of us in the west some hope-- vote McCain
- John Dougherty, Superior Colorado

EJ, we currently have a 10 trillion dollar debt under W. Our children are already in a deep, deep hole. You actually want to continue down this path? I actually care about our children. A Republican for Obama.
- Don Johnson, Manchester

For those you who really don't understand what socialism is let me help you. Socialism is any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods. Oh, let's say--just like what has happened with this current bail out--that occured under a Republican Administration. So, I guess by your definition--George W. Bush and John McCain are Socialist. Love Socialism--Vote McCain!
- Chris Prentiss, Nashua

Wake up New Hampshire alright. There is only one man for president and that would be Obama! McCain tested.Yes. But it was his father that was the hero. John McCain graduated 3rd from the bottom of his class. He bears scars I am sure he wished he didn't. We need fresh ideas, young, alert, and most of all INTELLIGENT.
- Debra Fernald, Bethlehem,Pa

Not going to publish critical responses today?
- XY & Z, Allover NH

Susie, you are correct. Class warfare has been the center piece of a campaign--the McCain campaign. Why should those making more than 2 Million dollars get the largest tax cut? The last eight years have proved that trickle down economics don't work. Maybe you make more than that 2 million. I don't. Have you actually paid any attention? What about McCain's relationship with Rashid Khalidi? The PLO spokesman who managed to get $480,000.00 from McCain. Please, why aren't you asking that question. Oh, I know. You only get your information from Fox News and the Union Leader.
- Archie League, Portsmouth

I believe that Obama is a citizen of Indonesia. He was adopted in Indonesia and is not a US citizen.

If he is not qualified by natural born citizenship to be President then the entire Constitution of USA is immediately null and void. All foreign countries can ignore any and all agreements and treaties with USA. All debts due the USA can be null and void. This in far too risky. The foundantion of all laws will be gone. we will live in a lawless country. Easy for Obama to declare martial law and make himself dictator just like what some countries have had happen in communist countries.

Why does Obama refuse to show his birth certificate. It is up to the candidate to prove he is eligible to be President. It is not up to the public to prove he is not eligible. The destruction of the Constitution and the entire USA for some 235 years is more than what I can vote for.

We must vote for McCain to avoid a Constitutional crisis that is greater then the Constitutional crisis of the attempt to succeed from the Union causing the civil war. Just think about that. this is more important than the civil war.

Look at people who came to power under Change and Hope. Hitler, Stalin, Castro, Mao, Chavez etc. Think about what happened in those countries once these people were elected.
- Ken Trainer, Nashua, NH

obama is campaying clinton style.tell people what they want to hear true or false.if you throw enough bull___ up against a wall sooner or later some will stick.he will raise taxes and cut the military.carter did it reagan had to restore the cuts.clinton raised taxes and cut the military so much that bullets were were shot for practice he then declared a surplus.word alone without substance have never produced a leader.we need a president who is the combination of franklen roosevelt and ronald reagan.this is first time in history that candidate for president has no military experience and without a governor background rhe same for biden.actually very scary.word from russia is the know what to expect from mccain but obaama is unpredictable.obama will make changes however with his mind as he has clearly demonstrated.mccains word is his bond.
- PAUL MCALLISTER, MARLBORO,MA

Brian Howard--empty suit? Please, at least be original. I would rather vote for an empty suit than an empty head. John McCain graduated at the very bottom of his class from the Naval Academy. We currently have a "C" student as President. Do we actually want to elect some one who is DUMBER? I certainly don't.
- A.S. Neil, Concord

BRAVO! Mr. Joseph W. McQuaid I am a democrat and I agree with You Sir 110%. The trouble here is the young and foolish ones that really don't know what life truly is about!!! If Obama (IF) elected the young will have put themselves in a hole so deep they won't be able to get out!! Thank You, A DEMOCRAT for McCain!!
- E J, Manchester

Thank you for your excellent article.
- Jia English, San Clemente, CA

What if everyone got tired of working hard, only to see the fruits of their labor given to those less fortunate - or worse, to those who will not work? What will those people do when the children need a new pair of shoes they can now no longer afford, or the family car needs an expensive repair, and they can no longer make their own ends meet? Who will assist them when they have been providing the assistance to others? What would happen if everyone in the country decided to become “takers” instead of “givers”?

Is that when the iron boot of communism comes down on our necks?

If you’re over the age of 40, you know that Communism was a major threat in your lifetime. If you’re under the age of 30, it would be a good idea to improve your knowledge of those events of the 20th century lest we be forced to repeat them. The United States of America was the force for good that stood in the way of Communist World Domination. As of now, we are still the world’s superpower.

Do you think those Communists who had those plans cease to exist today? Do you think they’ve abandoned their plans?

Please know your history, and consider how certain historical events are relevant to current events.

They are counting on your ignorance.

OBAMA IS WRONG FOR AMERICA.
- Mark Harris, Exeter, NH

mr mcqaid, you are a true american!!!! only a kool-aid drinking idiot would vote to destroy our way of life. a vote for obama would do just that. i have yet to meet an obama/socialist supporter who can articulate in a sensible way why they support him. let them delude themselves into thinking that this is not a close race. thank the Lord for sensible thinking editors like you. there are damn too few of you unfotunately!!!!!!!!!
- GEORGE P NAUM III, wheeling,wv

This is a quick thought to the comments I have been reading. Does anyone think that maybe the sleeping moral conscience of America is slowly waking up, and it is becoming more concerned with what is Godly and what is not Godly rather than what will make their life more convenient and comfortable? Mr. Obama might sound like he is "christian" by his wanting to "share the wealth" or "take care of the sick" but even Jesus Christ never forced anyone to live His way. God gave us free will and I think Mr. Obama will try to take more of that free will away. He has already done this to the people that have been given life but are still unable to defend themselves. Talk about preying on the week and defenseless. That was my first reason for not trusting him. I personaly think that he either does not understand True Christianity or he understands it perfectly well and has decided to give and portray a false idea of it which would make him very anti Christ!
Please excuse my poor grammer but I feel very passionate about this and had to say something.
- Bridget Proulx, Manchester,NH

I'm going to vote for McCain simply because I already know EXACTLY what Obama is going to do and I already know EXACTLY it won't work. I also believe that no matter how off the mark McCain happens to be, the fact that he is dealing with a Democrat congress led by the extremely vicious, ambitious, cutthroat, and amazingly partisan Nancy Pelosi will prevent too much damage from being done while we search for a better president. By comparison all the safeties in place for the Obama presidency have effectively been removed - in fact, he may end up executing MORE of his proposed agenda then he anticipated.
- Jeremy Janson, Midtown, Atlanta, GA

Diana--Class warfare has been the primary touchstone of Obama's campaign. If this isn't divisive and polarizing, then I don't know what is.

As for running an honorable campaign, McCain has done a superb job--perhaps to a fault. I'm not sure why the liberals are so riled up over McCain's ads. All I can figure is that the truth hurts. Now, what exactly is Obama's relationship with ACORN and Bill Ayers?
- Susie Nickerson, Horseshoe Bay, Texas (NH native)

"Do not judge a man but the color of his skin, but by the content of his character." MLKjr.

Under that criteria there is only one man to choose for our next president, John McCain. He is the one with character. The other one is just a character.
- Carole Mahan, Manchester, NH

Obama really is nothing more than an empty suit with really no credible experience and too many radical ideas. Aside from hard core liberals, voting for him is an emotional vote from anger looking for so called "change". If elected, we may just get the absolute WORST kind of change! Any sensible person knows McCain is the right choice!
- Brian Howard, Philadelphia, Pa

So where has John McCain 'been tested"? He changes his mind every 2 days. First test- Palin, the worst pick EVER.

Vote Republican and you are voting the walking dead, and 8 more years of misery. wasn't bush enough to smarten you up? Hope so.
- Arthur R Carmen, Concord

Guys, Obama has shown that he doesn't much like America as it is, the "solution" is no "minor repair." That is why his alliance with Ayers at The Annenberg Challenge makes great sense, as Ayers doesn't like America either. Leaving aside the lack of evidence that Obama would be a capable leader (his short legislative record shows no such thing), even if he were capable, in what direction would he lead since he doesn't like the country he would lead?

For Obama, the problems of the world are largely America's fault, whether these problems are in the Middle East, Europe, or Russia. His solution is therefore to use international organizations (e.g. the UN) despite the fact that these organizations have been successfully manipulated by totalitarian regimes (e.g., USSR, China) since their creation. Someone who is ashamed of his country--who likens the US in the 1950s to Nazi Germany--is not going to lead the country effectively as he will be focusing on all of its "ghastly" flaws.

And this same fellow hangs out with Islamic terrorists during a time when Islamism is the major international threat we face. He should be repulsed by these people, not at their parties. And no, sitting on a board that gave a grant to a group doing a poll is not the same thing as intimate and long-term personal and political relations.

Nobody sensible thinks that any country is without flaw. But a president should believe that his own country is mostly a concentration of good. Obama believes no such thing.
- Sam Kaufman, Chicago, IL

Obama's record from the Illinois state senate and recently revealed interviews show that he is a far left liberal. The vast majority of voters do not agree with his far left stance.

But Obama has toned down his far left rhetoric during this election cycle. It's not that he has changed his beliefs. It's that he just wants to get elected.

A vote for Obama is a vote against the interests of most voters.

Obama would appoint far left liberal judges at all levels of the federal judiciary. The vast majority of voters do not agree with the far left values of these judges, yet by voting for Obama, these voters will be approving an ideology and an agenda that they strongly disagree with.

And remember, judges are appointed for life.

Obama would appoint far left liberals to his cabinet. Once again the vast majority of voters do not agree with the ideology or agenda of these liberal bureaucrats. But when you vote for Obama that is what you get.

And Obama would sign legislation authored by ultra liberals like Nancy Pelosi, Harry Reid and Barney Frank.

Again, the vast majority of voters do not approve of the ideology or agenda of these ultra liberals, but if you vote for Obama that is what you get.

For at least four years you will have to bear the consequences of approving an agenda that you don't agree with.

An Obama economic policy could make our economy far worse than it is today.

Increased taxation of businesses will increase the cost of doing business and reduce investment in new technology.

Increased taxes on investors will cause investors to shift away from investing in new businesses as well.

The end result will be akin to the Jimmy Carter years with skyrocketing prices and high unemployment.

I remember when inflation hit 20% toward the end of the Carter years. In those days taxes were nearly double what they are today.

Do we really want to turn back the clock to the bad old days?
- Amanda Sanders, Amherst

When I watched on TV a lady ask a campaigning Joe Biden what she should tell her well off friends, I saw Joe tell her that they better start being patriotic! I Gasped!!! Then my wife said to me -- Hey - ya know - that's what they told my Mother and Grandfather starting in 1949. The patriotic push by Chairman Mao morphed into the total seizure of everything and they lost their Dairy Farm to the government and then they were given a menial government job... Now it seems like approx 50% of America will willfully sell out to Obama for a few trinkets of credits that will not save them!! I am so saddened and fearful !!!!!!! Then they started the creation of Civilian National Guard and what happened to the people - they all ended up going after each other. Obama now wants something like this too! Talk about "Slippery Slope". Blind Sheep me Thinks!
- Keith Schneider, Slinger, WI

To Ed.. It seems as if you would prefer that roe v wade got tossed out and you would rather have the women of this country having dangerous and life threatening back alley abortions. I suppose you would prefer to take away the womens right to vote as well?
- Theresa Stevens, Dover NH

Diana, I am honestly holding back some of the things I want to say to you out of fear that my comment will be blocked by the UL because of how much your comment ticked me off. You are a very sad person when you say that John McCain doesn't have integrity. McCain IS integrity. I'm sorry that my candidate isn't good enough for you because he hasn't sat in an anti-American church for 20 years or doesn't have mob and terrorist connections and hasn't lied about these connection trough out his entire campaign. I'm sorry that my candidate didn't lie after saying that he would not accept private financing for his campaign as yours did. I'm sorry that my candidate has served his country in the military, congress, and senate for his entire life while yours has only been in the senate for a couple of years (where he voted "present" a majority of the time.) I'm sorry that my candidate isn't using race as yours did to discredit Bill Clinton or sexism as yours did with Hillary and Sarah Palin. I'm sorry that my candidate didn't manipulate the media to force them into supporting his campaign.

You know what Diana, I'm not sorry. I am proud of John McCain and will fight for every vote over the next couple of days with thousands of other volunteers and win or lose, my candidate has more integrity in his little toe than yours has in his whole body. We supporters know that we did our best to elect a man whom has the qualifications and character to be commander in chief and I truly believe that in 48 hours, we will see John McCain elected president of the United States BECAUSE of his integrity.
- Chris King, Manchester

Rob, enough with the Democrat talking points. I am so sick and tired of hearing the lie that McCain is Bush. If you had any political knowledge whatsoever, you would know that McCain is one of the most moderate Republicans in modern history. Heck, Al Gore considered putting McCain on his ticket as his VP back when he ran for President. Do some research and stop being an Obama zombie.
- Ryan Feltner, Manchester, New Hampshire

Being smart, that is the best advise...and I hope that people in New Hampshire do not vote with emotions and just against Bush but for this great country. If Obama is elected millions will repent, trust me on that one, I was born in Venezuela where they elected a guy with the identical rethoric of the American democratic senator...well, 10 years later, Chavez is still there leading a once-rich country that is the embarrasment of Latin America. I never felt more proud for my early vote last week: McCain/Palin!
- Nohemi Lopez, Pembroke Pines Florida

Communism? Marxism? You apparently have not been paying attention to what is going on. Our country has been on a slippery slope to Marxism since the day George W Bush got elected. We have some how been fooled in to believing that forgoing civil liberties for some temporary, and mostly, imagined security is a good thing. I certainly can't say this better than Benjamin Franklin who said, "those who would sacrifice liberty for security deserve neither." A country that spies on its own citizens is not free. We condemn Vietnam for torturing prisoners--like John McCain yet we torture prisoners at Guantanamo. Sarah Palin has publically stated that the war in Iraq is a task from God. Oddly, this is the same thing the Jihadist there believe. I am certainly not goint to support a religious war. I am a Republican who is tired of the hypocrisy. The Republican party has been hijacked by the extreme far right--and so, I will vote for Barack Obama.
- John Little, Bow

So, to Bill Howard from Exeter, how exactly has John McCain been tested in any kind of leadership position? To Kathy Radford from Kingston I ask...how IS McCain the "tried and true"? How is he to be a capable President when all he has done is tout that he will continue the policies of the past eight years? And, to use a phrase employed with much success by Ronald Reagan, are we better off then we were eight years ago? Considering our current economic situation, the fact we are fighting two foreign wars that have cost the lives of over 4000 American soldiers with absolutely no end in sight for either of them, the amount of debt that has been handed onto our plates, our childrens plates and out grandchildrens plates because we (as a country) don't want to pay our bills as they come due, and our sadly diminshed standing in world opinion..I would say a resounding "no". I am willing to take a chance. I am willing to turn toward optimism rather than cynicism. I have a deep faith in what the first George Bush called "that shining city on the hill" that is the true United States of America where anyone can succeed with dedication and hard work. That is Barak Obama and that's why I'm voting for him this Tuesday. And, to Ed Holdgate in Sandown, I too agree with you that abortion is a true tragedy. But I also know I do not have the right to dictate how people live their lives which is why I will continue to advocate for abortion being kept legal along with access to family planning, education and birth control.
Peace
- Joel Folliard, Nashua

Re: Mr Punturieri's comments: I find it hard to believe that everything that has gone wrong with the US (including Katrina) is all Bush's fault. I don't think that anyone who is responding agrees with Bush, even myself but to not look at the cancerous and matastisized government we have and how deep the responsibility lies with both parties. This shows just how narrow-minded you Bush haters are and how unwilling you are to recognize the real source of the problems. After all trying to explain facts to liberals will never work because most, if not all, liberals are feelers and care nothing about facts.

The idea that the poor, indigent and middle-class deserve a handout is also short-sighted. Look at the entire picture and you will see how deep-seated this country's problems are. Remember it takes three arms of government to have caused all the cancerous growth we now see and it started long before Bush was elected. I can only wonder how Obama is going to find you a job after you get laid off and he raises taxes on the very companies you will depend on to get a new one. Perhaps you do need a handout but don't ever come to my home asking me to give you something that I worked hard for. You might not get precisely what you are asking for.

You will refuse to see this, JUST BECAUSE YOU HATE BUSH!!!
- Dennis Williams, Merrimack NH

Joe McQuaid, a cynical and bitter little man, should have the simple dignity to never use "optimism" in anything he writes.

It's an emotion he's never felt.
- Tom Herotta, Epping

Hey, John from Hollis do you actually know what communism or marxism is? Apparently, not. We are far closer to marxism under the current administration than we would be under an Obama administration. Take a moment and actually read something other than the Union Learder--try watching something other than Faux news and you may actually learn something.

For Ed--I don't to say that what you wrote is untrue but, I for one don't believe a word of what you wrote.
- Roy Hobbs, Manchester

Obama's promises fall on deaf ears here. His infomercial was enough to turn me away. I, for one am not buying a President on a "late night" sales speech. He has made no CRITICAL decisions in his lifetime. He has never been faced with challenge and his political history as an elected official is 100% what he has campaigned on. I can not endorse or embrace any candidate who comes across as such a chameleon.
- Tom Walker, Brookline

Mr. McQuaid, if you think I would vote for McCain because you endorse him, get in touch with me. I have a bridge I would like to sell you, cheap.
- Bill Kaiser, Tuftonboro

Speaking of "trust", you undecided voters would not vote for somebody who defends child abuse, would you? Well abortion is the ultimate child abuse, and both Barack Hussein Obama and the self-professing "Catholic" Joe Biden defend the unmitigated killing, and even seek taxpayer funding of the horrors. I spoke to a "pro-choice" Obama-Biden sign-waver on the street yesterday, and in 10 seconds she herself referred to the unborn as a "baby parasite" but insisted such killing of the "baby" was a choice. America, there is nothing but a slippery slope from abortion to a time when the sick, and aged, and infirm (us in a few years!) would be considered "parasites" on society by such heartless voters. A vote for Obama-Biden is a vote to head down that slope. A vote for McCain-Palin is a vote for a compassionate America that a mom or baby could "trust".
- Ed Holdgate, Sandown NH

Because Obama's policies are clearly in line with Marxism and Communism, and his wealth redistribution plan includes confiscation of many thousands of dollars per year from those who actually earn it through hard work and dedication. When he wins, I will be halting any spending on automobiles, electronics, gifts, home improvement, stock market investments, so I may keep my home. The economy will retract. It will be a repeat of the 1917 era of Russia.

I guess if you agree with the editorial you must agree that the last 8 years under President Bush has provided nothing but economic prosperity. Bush has already run us into the ground. McCain has offered nothing specific to change anything. Nothing wrong with a dreamer by the way.

Guess who is gonna vote for John McCain. The "geniuses" who voted for a second term of GW Bush. Bush lost this state by only 1 percentage point in 2004, so I am going to have to disagree with you Kathy. New Hampshire is definitely not as smart as you might think. Whether, its Obama's eloquence or his ability to reach a broad array of people, he will win this state. He of course is "head and shoulders" above his opponent and the people of NH will be making a great choice. They might not be able to see through Obamas "smooth talk" but they sure do not want to be responsible for putting John McCain or Sarah Palin in charge.

The word "integrity" should not be used to describe John McCain. Any that he had he threw away with the deplorable campaign he and his running mate have run.
His "solid faith and optimism in America" is questionable. He and his running mate made it very clear that not all Americans are worthy. Only if you are from the "real" America or "patriotic" America. The politics of division only hurts our country.
I am an Independent voter who voted for McCain in the 2000 primary. My vote will go to Barack Obama on Tuesday. He is the man with true integrity and solid faith and optimism in ALL Americans. We are all part of the real and patriotic America, not matter where we live or what party we belong to.

Vote for the tried and true. Vote Bush! Er, I mean, McCain.

Mr. McQuaid, Abraham Lincoln was much less "prepared" than McCain, Obama, and anyone else you care to name.

Based on McCain's Republican trickle-down economic ideals, his divisiveness (apparently I and most New Hampshirites are not real Americans), and ignorance of the issues and his own policies (both this season and in 2000, when the media fawned over him), a McCain presidency would only be remembered as a disaster.

If we elect Obama and a Congress that will not obstruct his plan to provide healthcare for nearly all Americans, his presidency will be rightly and fondly remembered as one of the greatest in American history.

Joe Biden has guaranteed that we will have a major crisis if Obama is elected. The terrorists will want to "test" him.

GOOD NEWS: John McCain has already been tested.
- Bill Howard, Exeter

You couldn't have said it better.Wake up New Hampshire we're smarter than that and can see through a smooth talking Obama. He will run us into the ground for sure. Vote for the tried and true. Vote McCain.
