Thanks to this jerk and many like him, our prices go even higher to cover the loss!

I also think cashiers need to be trained to recognize the value of items and not just beep-boop-beep on autopilot through the day! When is the last time you had customer service or a cashier actually say more to you than mumbling a “Hihowareya”? We have slowly changed from a manufacturing workforce (now that we outsource so much) to a ‘service’ workforce, and no one seems to know how to provide attentive service. A simple price check when something doesn’t seem to ring up correctly could have caught this guy long ago (like other folks commented). Question things, trust your intuition! Report it to management if you work there, and if they won’t do anything, push it up the chain.

As far as “not allowed to approach them,” (SD, Attleboro) maybe that’s true in Mass., but in my lifetime, I have certainly seen people stopped at the door and questioned. It’s everyone’s responsibility to report this stuff! I once saw someone try it right next to me in an aisle, and I said, “Umm, WHAT are you doing??” and she took off, dropping her loot on the floor on her way out. I guess a can of air freshener wasn’t worth jail time after all, but for some, it’s a compulsion and they need help. Report it!

My girlfriend works at a local Lowes here in southern MA and she witnessed the same thing happening last week. The management just let him go. Their not allowed to approach them. She thinks that it is the same guy, but doesn't think management will report it.
- SD, Attleboro MA

I've seen people stealing in Walmart, Home Depot, Sams Club and Lowes. Each time I have notified someone from the store but they didn't seem very interested. I can't blame them if there is no real security to get involved and stop the thieves before they exit or at least to get basic descriptions of them and the vehicle they leave in. It seems the businesses that we are all worried about closing do very little to prevent theft.

I am not so sure the contractor is liable. He was buying home depot gift cards and that happens all the time. In fact I had two I got for gifts and was going to sell them on Craig's list until I saw the joke of a price those wanting to buy them were offering. Glad this guy got caught and obviously someone did notice it as it was investigated for 10 months.
The whine story about "the poor kid had it rough" is laughable and not a viable excuse. A lot of us have it rough growing up but that does not mean we do this kind of thing. Once again another fine example of the good things those from Mass bring to NH.

This guy is awesome! That was such a good idea, shame he got caught

So Tom you had to make this about Obama huh? Bush was just so great....move to Crawford then you can be with him.
- David, Concord, NH

The beauty of self checkout. That self checkout is so ripe for people to steal it's ridiculous. 1 person watching 4 registers, when 1 has an issue he's over there for 10 minutes not watching the other 3. A way to save money, convenient, but such a big target for thiefs. Has to be a better way to police these things at the checkout.
- Kevin, Derry NH

Laura, home depot did they work. they noticed it and investigated and now he is arrested. What else did you want them to do?
- JD, nashua

Send this guy to Wall Street or the Obama Administration, he will fit right in!
- Tom, Manchester

You'd be surprised how often this happens. As a teen I worked part-time at a Wal-Mart and personally caught three people doing this exact thing on separate occasions. It's a bit obvious when you ring a brand new DVD through the register and the screen displays "PHOTO FRAME $0.99". I'm honestly surprised he wasn't caught earlier by store staff.
- Matthew, Manchester

aww...

society must have failed him, huh liberals? it's not his fault that he did this. he just doesn't know any better. he's lived a bad life, so let's just forgive him, huh? let's not take into consideration that what he did cost the company well over 40 grand. he also cost people who actually BUY things at HD to pay a lot more now.

thanks buddy, you're a peach! i'll be thinking of you when i have to pay 5 bucks for a 2x4 instead of 2, maybe i can use that 2x4 to rap you upside your big fat head!

Danny Durham, I think the Dude is Amish.
- Francis, Francistown

Danny Durham, It's not a razor issue. He was using an Amish Disguise. Pretty good one to. They made him remove his straw hat for the mug shot
- Pete, Hampton.

What a great scheme! He should have stopped earlier and he might have gotten away with it.
- JRJ, Candia, NH

You gotta hand it to him though, he had quite the racket going didn't he? Should have bought a better razor though. He looks kinda disheveled.
- Danny, Durham

Maybe Home Depot should re-evaluate their training methods. Don't these cashiers check prices when the merchandise comes through? It's only common sense that if you have a large item, it probably has a high price tag. If you scan something and it doesn't seem right, ask some questions!!
- Laura, Merrimack

This poor kid has had it rough. I grew up with him and his brother. Sad to see the way things turned out.
- Jay, Manchester, NH

Tony in NH - I agree with you. People are hurting bad, we dont need this clown on the streets....
- Jennifer, Weare NH

What about the Contractor who was buying the ill gotten cards? No mention of what CO. it was or who the owner is I see. How about getting all the facts first then print something worth printing.
Question to is the unsuspecting people who hired this CO. now liable for receiving stolen property? I am certain that the Contractor is.
- Eric, Manchester, NH

Great ! We are out working hard at staying in business with this economy. In the meen time this guy is working as hard to put someone out of business. Home Depot employs a lot of people ! With out them there would that many more jobs needed to be filled. Toss the book at him.
