JB, NB. When I say "the last thing we need", I'm speaking of conservatives. John Sununu believes (or believed - I don't think he believes it anymore) that the way to get Democrats to support him was to act like a Democrat. He was wrong and all of the other Republicans In Name Only (RINO's) found out the same thing. The Democrats will always vote for the Democrat, no matter how moderate the Repuclican may seem. And Judd Gregg is making the same mistake with this government bail out business. He's the only one left and he's playing right in to their hands.
- Roger, Litchfield

I know I am a foreigner here on this comment page but let me speak to those who are interested in a GOP majority again. I have lived a long time and seen the party's transformation from a permanent minority to a majority.

Moderates were the permanent minority in the past and as they take over the party, we are a minority again. If you are give the choice to vote for a liberal Republican or a liberal Democrat, folks will go for the real McCoy.

Moderates do not produce conflict with liberal Democrats because they basically agree with most of what Libearls say and do.

They block out the economic and social voice and values of the silent majority in America in exchange for the elitist, amoral globalist economic and politically correct social view. George Bush was not a Conservative and when he was in power, you head no conservative voice or argument given to economic and social policy which appealed to the "silent majority."

Conservative social argumentis not based in religion. It is called Western culture, philosphy and values as opposed to socialist humanistic amoral claptrap. Western cultural ethics and values goes with a free economy. Amoral Humanism goes will with a socialist police and elitist nanny state. We can not have a free market with an unethical business community. That is why the understanding and promotion of Western cultural values and ethics of self restraint must accompany a free market.

I am so saddened by the election loss of Sen. Sununu! Having lived through the Shaheen era in NH, I find it mind-boggling that the citizens voted her back in. She was an abject failure as Governor and a Clinton lap-dog, to boot. We were so lucky to have him. I just can't believe our state has become so "dumbed down" that we voted out a man with a Bachelor's and a Master's degree in Engineering from MIT for this dim bulb of woman!!
- Todd, Manchester

I don't know where Tim and others are coming from other than they obviously don't follow the news or Sununu's record. He has maintained a staunch moderate "GOP" stance since his election to public office and has broken with the Bush administration on many key issues. He has impressed me with his stance on energy, the patriot's act, trying to put the skids on Fannie/Freddie antics (and losing to Barney,Nancy and Harry inc.) and illegal immigration. He has served NH well. That he got tossed out with the bath water in favor of Shaheen who hasn't a clue other than what Nancy and Harry tell her is a travesty. Whatever he does in the future I hope he considers either the RNC, IF they want to get their act together, or run for the Governorship of NH - Lord knows we need some managerial leadership and fiscal restraint. HE can do both.
- sandy picard, thornton

I really can't trust Sununu's judgment after that bailout vote. That was horrible. It destroyed all the good conservative karma he'd built up over the years.
- Rowland, Fremont

if Sununu is so smart why did he not see the NH voters disapproval of republican policy in the 2006 elections - he could have broke with Bush on a number of issues but instead chose to stay in lockstep with policies of failure - the only time he truly broke with Bush was in his reelection campaign - it was really quite pathetic
- tim, gilmanton

At a time when we need leaders who are smarter than the average joe, sending Sununu home and Shaheen to Washington was about the dumbest thing Nh could have done. (aside from reelecting Shea-Porter, that wasn't dumb, that was stupid). We need smart people with intergity, and the rebuilding of the GOP "brand" would be in very capable hands should Senator Sununu decide to take on this challenge.
- jeff, goffstown

It is a shame that one of the best young senators in the country, John Sununu, fell victim to the anti-Republican vote in his re-election bid. Anyone who did the research on the candidates will tell you that the Senator was far more qualified to retain this seat. Can anyone tell me what Jeanne Shaheen stands for? She got 55% of the vote in this state, yet I still do not know her platform. People voted for her because she was not a Republican, and she successfully, and erroneously, tied John Sununu to George Bush.

Senator Sununu represented this state as well as he could have given the current economic and political climate, and I believe that it was a huge mistake to put Jeanne Shaheen in Washington. He will rebound from this defeat, and I think some sort of leadership position in the RNC is a good start for him.
- Brian, Concord

Can't think of a better "LOSER IN CHIEF"
- Norm, Candia

No offense, but if John can't beat Jeanne Shaheen, he'll never be able to compete against the DNC on a national stage. Say all you want about the Democrat Party and their Chair, Howard Dean, but Dean, and his understanding of how to conduct politics and raise money over the internet doomed the Republicans from the start. There is also talk about Newt being nominated to the RNC Chair as well. That would also be a kiss of death. Gingrich bailed out on the Republican Party an the mid 90's and has no place in the leadership anymore. The GOP needs to identify a charismatic, fresh Republican face, that understands the internet and how to harness that power. Bum-kissing, in the traditional Republican sense no longer works to win elections. Sorry John. Try running against Lynch in 2 years.
- gr chase, Exeter

People who blame the demise of the GOP in NH on an influx of people from "somewhere else" should reflect on this: When given the opportunity to enact zoning laws that would have prevented the stuffing of the maximum number of housing units onto one's property, I believe it was Republican's that shouted about 'government taking' of land, not Democrats.

Controlling growth via zoning regulations may have worked in the Republican's favor by reducing the number of people from 'away' who could move to the state. It hurts when you want your cake and eat it, too, and wind up with a stomach ache, doesn't it?

By the way, I'm a New Hampshire native.
- Texter, Newfields

John E. Sununu, the Senate's only engineer, has an extremely rare combination of technological and political capabilities. He is a pragmatic workhorse who lost to a showhorse and his defeat is a tremendous blow to the U.S. The RNC chairmanship would be a misuse of his talents and he'd be wise to resist it. Better yet -- a high profile lobbying position with the defense or nuclear industries, both of which will be under stress in the hostile political environment about to descend on Washington and will need all the intellectual resources he can summon.
- bill olender, manchester, nh

Roger from Litchfield--when you say 'the last thing that WE need', you must be referring to that vocal minority that has run the GOP into the gutter already by making such great decisions to become involved in Terry Schiavo, Intelligent Design/Creationism curriculae, politics of fear, prejudice and hatred and sundry other hallmark policies and behaviors.

If the GOP is to become once again the Grand Old Party, it needs talented, intelligent moderate leadership that can unite the party and return to its TRUE roots--reduced government, personal freedom and fiscal sanity.

John Sununu is just such a leader.
- JB, NB, NH

Mike, you can't blame Massachusetts "immigrants" in the southern part of the state for Shaheen's victory... if anything they helped Sununu. If you look at a map of town-by-town election results, you will see that the most consistently Republican towns are all along the Massachusetts border.
- Moses Burnshaw, Keene, NH

The republican party has a serious decision to make. Do they court moderates and go middle, or do they go farther to the right?
Sununu may run for gov, but Lynch may have his eye on the other senate seat anyway.
Mike of Manch: your argument makes no sense, you claim people notice Lynch's secretive tax increases yet they continue to vote for him??? Either Lynch is right and people don't notice, or you are right and the people are supportive of the fee hikes.
- Chip, Wilton

I would love to see John run for Governor but I think it is more important to get the RNC on a whole back on track. John Sununu was a great Senator and I shudder at what the Wicked Witch of the North (aka Shaheen) will do in Washington.

Whatever John Sununu chooses to do I hope he knows he has the full support of the people who believe in him.
- Alison, Manchester

I'd like to seem him run for Governor as well. This state needs to return back to its roots that Gregg and his father adhered too years back when they ran the state. Lynch is one of the worst "do nothing" governors ever...well except that his good at passing "under the table taxes" that he thinks people don't notice.

It's too bad that he lost to Shaheen...she is scary...but then again since most of southern NH is now Massachusetts immigrants I'm not surprised.

Hey John, if you run and win as governor, please introduce a bill that no one is allowed to move to NH from MA unless they pass a fiscal responsibility test!!
- Mike, Manchester, NH

This is the last thing we need. Sununu is "democrat lite". He thinks by being moderate, the democrats will like him. How did that work out John? NH needs conservatives, not sell outs.
- Roger, Litchfield

I was really hoping Sen. Sununu would consider a run for NH Gov in 2010.
- Bryan Lemire, Nashua

If the Republican party continues on its course of opposition to stem cell research and a woman's right to choose, along with the injection of religion into everything, I don't see how they can stop the downward slide. Let's not even talk about government intrusion into the bedroom and private conversations. Soon, the US will be worse than the UK in terms of surveillance, and we won't be any safer.
- Texter, Newfields

I think both parties need to split into three factions each. This would give us six parties and the voter a better choice. Right now, we have to put in a government of what we perceive to be the lesser of two evils. The past two decades have shown the flaws in this.
That way moderates could vote for moderates, liberal for liberals and conservatives for conservatives. We are having to elect people who do what we don't like in order to get what we want addressed.
This would also put and end to the "good party bad party" game that the electorate has to play at every election.
Maybe after this dictatorship is over, people will wake up and accept this idea.
- Steve, Raymond

WE NEED NEWT!

Sununu needs to challenge a useless Judd Gregg for the Senate.
- gary ellmer, portsmouth

I couldn't disagree more. If the RNC wants to remake itself, they need a chairman who is a real conservative. Sununu's a RINO. If he becomes RNC chairman, it'll be a clear sign to me that the GOP is not serious about reforming the party.

Personally, I think we are in dire need of a Conservative/Nationalist party.
- Gary Edwards, Lincoln

It's not a Senate seat but John Sununu would be a great RNC Chair it would be great if he were to channel his energy and skills into rebuilding what Ole Dubyah destroyed. Keep it moving, he deserves the job.
- Richard L. Fortin, Manchester
