Historically, employment is the last component of the economy to improve after a recession. Happens every time. Just think about it - before Whirlpool starts hiring workers to make more washing machines, they need to reduce the inventory now piled up in their warehouses. Consumer spending has to increase substantially before the employment figures improve.

Frank in Chichester,
You're correct, Bush bears some share of the blame for letting the budget get out of control. But the Democratic congress (last 3 years) and Obama have gone so far beyond him at this point that it's completely justified to say that it's their mess now.

NAFTA, CAFTA & GATT.
Thanks.

Eric is right.
Cut all taxs and the money will be spent in the local area. Stop big company bail outs, we see they did not work it just hurt the middle class.
- pete, deerfield
Increasing taxes on the middle and lower classes, either with income taxes, property taxes, or other taxes and fees will only hurt the economy in the long run. The more they try to squeeze out of people with zero discretionary income, the more we'll all cut back on buying.
The government can't borrow more money without shooting the economy in the head. The only way a government can get out of the problem of being bankrupt is to go to war against its creditors. Which means we either nuke the heck out of China, or learn to speak Mandarin.

How can unemployment continue to increase when the main stream media keeps saying the recession is over? Or is it just a false effort at building confidence after print, tax, and spend failed just like it always does.
All I can say is that Obama is lucky he has a lying media on his side. Well lying might be a bit too strong a word. After all not reporting anything negative is not lying. It's more like a half truth or manipulation. I'm still waiting for one negative report on anything this administration does from WMUR channel 9. I figure I'll be dead or a Republican will be in office before that day comes again, or with any luck they will be out of business.

Where were all you naysayers when Bush was ruining the country? I am no fan of BHO, but digging out of this economic mess is going to take more than 10 months. I can see all the Obama bashers waking up the day after the inauguration screeaming, "See, we're still in a recession, he lied!"
- Frank, Chichester
How are you men enjoying your unemployment? Unemployment insurance will not last forever, then what? Hopefully, you can room with a women you know that still works, otherwise, enjoy the cold winter outside! Diversity is wonderful,, aye? Enjoy...
- Kevin, Portsmouth, NH
While the real productive workers are trying to live off unemployment and save their small businesses, the government and "education" continues to bleed the same taxpayers by hiring, hiring, hiring. And guess who those government employees and teachers' unions vote for? This trend is more than frightening, it is demolishing this country and its society.

So cut taxes, let people keep more of their money and let a thousand flowers bloom. People using the fruits of their own labor are the engine that will get us out of this thing. Additional taxes will only kill more jobs and frustrate people. Hey Concord and Washington, leave us alone!
- Eric S., Belmont
Obama's "stimulus" sure is doing the trick, isn't it? Spin and outright lies to the contrary, the economy is not recovering and will not recover due to Obama's anti-capitalist policies, which penalize innovation and the entrepreneurial spirit, burden American taxpayers with enormous debt, and are destroying our currency.
Don't believe me? You don't have to - keep smoking those "green shoots" as we continue to lose jobs and the economy remains depressed. The recession/depression will linger long after the haze clears.
- Tom, Campton
Remember when everyone thought obama was a god and he was going to rein riches and good tidings for all of us?
How about the ones that worshipped lynch and said that Benson was a horrible governor? (We had a balanced budget then and you hate this why?)
Well, now your dems are in power (and have been for sometime now) where are all the things you promised?
Seems you are just digging us in even deeper, this time to our enemies.
Be careful throwing stones, those of you who live in glass houses.
- Pauline, Franklin
Welcome to the world of the unemployed, 750 State workers. However, you Chose it, others are never given a choice.
- BW, Candia
How much higher will this number be if Gov. Lynch sticks to his pledge to lay off 750 state workers? Welcome to the club SEA members.
- ck, manchester
NH and the country will continue to see higher unemployment. Companies are not growing. We continue to see companies moving their operations overseas as our Congress and the White House continue their high taxation policies.
The good news being played to us saps is that the loss of jobs is slowing, that's supposed to make us feel better and give us confidence. In the meantime, we continue to not spend our money.
Despite all of the hype put out by our illustrious leaders, the recession is not slowing, it's just changing course.
And it's not just Obama. He is just continuing the mess started by leaders of the past, including Bush. Our congress has lined their pockets with cash while enacting laws that benefited big companies, all at the expense of our economy and our jobs.
Call your reps and Senators in Washington and ask them what they are doing to keep jobs here and lower taxes. Don't accept the stimulus bill as an answer, that money is going to welfare recipients. It's building prosperity "from the bottom up."
- Melvin, Keene
"New Hampshire is in a better employment position than other New England states"
This is because a large part of New Hampshire's unemployed aren't counted in the New Hampshire tally because they formerly worked in, and therefore collect unemployment benefits from Massachusetts.
