Plymouth State University men's basketball head coach John Scheinman will take a leave of absence for one season, opening the door for assistant Jay Harris to run the team next year.

In a news release on its Web site, the university said Scheinman will work full-time in the advancement office, where his new responsibilities will assist with the development efforts for new athletic facilities.

"A need arose for a person to fill an athletic role in our development projects, and John is the right person for the job,'' said PSU athletic director John P. Clark. "I'm excited for both John and Jason Harris, who will be the interim coach. This is a wonderful opportunity for both of them.''

Scheinman's career record is 136-85 in eight seasons with five postseason berths.

In a statement released by Scheinman through the university, he said the program will be in "great hands'' under Harris.

"I look forward to returning to the sidelines next year with my batteries recharged and ready to go,'' said Scheinman.

Harris is a 2005 graduate of Rhode Island College, serving three seasons as a captain during his four-year tenure as a starter. He served one season as an assistant for the Anchorman under coach Bob Walsh and joined Scheinman's staff last season.

"I hope to maintain the level of the program during Coach Scheinman's absence,'' Harris said in a statement released by the university. "I would like to thank Mr. Clark and Coach Scheinman for having the faith to consider me for this position.''
