Paul counting on independent voters

New Hampshire Union Leader Correspondent

Ron Paul said yesterday that taking winning 10 percent of the Republican caucus results in Iowa puts him in solid standing for the New Hampshire primary, with its large contingent of independent voters.

Paul, a U.S. representative from Texas, said he captured 29 percent of the independent vote in Iowa, and "when we saw those statistics, we knew the obvious opportunities in New Hampshire" with its 44 percent of independent voters.

His supporters on the streets at midday yesterday were handing out miniature copies of the U.S. Constitution, led by the staccato of a drummer in Colonial dress and a tri-corner hat and chants calling for a revolution.

Last night, about 40 people at a house gathering heard Paul explain his plans for restoring constitutionalism, a political theory that he says means a major reduction in military commitments, ending trade agreements supported by subsidies and abolishing income tax with no proposed substitute.

Homeowner Linda Lagana and neighbor Cathy Whalen said they don't have a second choice on the ballot, and Stephen Szewczyk of Nashua said he wouldn't even vote in November if Paul doesn't get the nomination.

Lagana said she was fed up with government spending and inflation, and if Paul did not get elected, a movement to get the support of legislators for stable economic policies would continue.

"This is not going away," she said.

After being "uninvited" to participate in FOX's debate Sunday night at St. Anselm College, Paul decided to purchase an hour-long television slot that evening, because "I can afford it." (Note: When originally posted, this story misidentified the debate. Paul is in the January 5 ABC debate.)

He raised $20 million in the fourth quarter, more than any other Republican campaign.

Paul said he is going after the Republican nomination and has no interest in a third-party ticket.

He told his audience last night, "We are $2.7 trillion in debt, and history tells us that all great nations collapse due to economic reasons. It starts when the currency goes down, and right now on some days the Canadian dollar increases higher than the U.S dollar, and that should tell us something."

Paul said the borrowing and printing of money creates economic inequities, because the people who get the printed and borrowed money first, notably the government, bankers and financial institutions, get to use it first, and that is an advantage.

He wants to transitionally abolish the Federal Reserve and its money-printing operations and many of the governmental institutions and their programs, such as military occupation, that create a need for foreign debt credits to restrain inflation and reinstitute local controls.

Ron Paul is the ONLY chance we "regular" folks have of ending some of the government madness that has been forced upon us. I'm talking about more taxes, neverending military budgets spent not on the DEFENSE of our country which would be valid, but instead spent on "empire building" around the world, We have higher prices on everything from food to gas since Mr. Bush has been in office in order to help this empire building effort. John McCain would continue this. Ron Paul is the ONLY candidate from EITHER party who would use our Constitution, (which is SUPPOSED to be the law of the land ANYWAY), in order to get us where we SHOULD be as a truly democratic republic!! He should be supported, REGARDLESS of what the mass media and the Washington Establishment says!!

Lower taxes, end the war and foreign intervention, constitutionally sized government, safe borders, no amnesty, preserve privacy and repeal The Patriot Act. What's not to like about Rep. Ron Paul as our next president.

For years I lived in Claremont, NH.

I have absolute faith in NH voters to recognize that THEY decide who can or can't win, not FOX.

Time Magazine's Mark Halperin said repeatedly today on CSPAN that Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich represent the views of "tens of millions of Americans".

Yet he went on to explain that the field should be narrowed down at some point to give more time to those who can win the nomination.

How can a man who represents the views of tens of millions of Americans have no shot at winning a party nomination, especially a party that is reeling, as we saw in 2006?

Although I am proud to be a redneck from the deep south, the "live free or die" slogan of the people of New Hampshire hits home here as well.

I appreciate the efforts you have made to treat all candidates with fairness. As Americans, we can be proud of many things, but one of the greatest is that we are united in Liberty and Freedom.

God Bless the people of the USA.

Fox News is not just reporting, it is deciding also. When a news organization becomes the news because of its actions, it does not serve the interest of the public.

I support Ron Paul as a candidate for president. I support his right to fair and equal treatment in the media. I believe he is the right person to lead this nation with a message of freedom, peace and prosperity.

Great journalism!

There is a unifying force in Iraq...It is the u.S. -- As always happens in "world police" actions, the u.S. has become the common enemy of the Iraqi people, and the corporations and "inside" folks making the
"big bucks" selling out our country don't
give 2-cents about sacrificing our young
men's and women's lives in pursuit of a
dollar. "Support our troops" does NOT
mean having our troops performing martial
law by policing a foreign nation. That's
not in the oath they took when they
volunteered as u.S. military members. Ron Paul is the only candidate that understands this, and he's the only candidate that truly supports our troops. The catholic folks
demonstrating at Huckabee's headquarters
in Iowa asked an interesting question of
pastor/senator Huckabee last week..."Who
would Jesus bomb, Mike?" He obviously avoided answering the question as he quickly drove away in his big bus.

I'm all for defending our country -- I'm just
not for world conquest and nation building.

Support our troops...Bring them home now!
Vote Ron Paul - Hope for America!

McCain just said he's ok with spending 100 MORE YEARS in Iraq???? He said this in Derry, NH

My fellow NH voters, let us NOT be blamed for McCain winning this presidency. This is too important. Get out and vote for Ron Paul. He is our ONLY chance!!!!!!!
- Chris Collins, Tilton, New Hampshire

Ron Paul has the audacity to speak directly to the establishment with no candy coating. America needs cold-hard-truth right now. This man is an inspiration to millions of Americans. FOX news has only fueled the fire by intentionally pushing him out of the upcoming debate. Many people have started to Boycott FOX and those corporations who advertise on FOX news. The persistence to return America to a Constitutional Republic will not cease, regardless of this Presidential election. The people will be heard. Ron Paul represents for the people, unlike the other paid-for, poser candidates.
- Eric Morgan, Derry, NH

To the Good People of NH

Your votes can teach the national mass media an important lesson in democracy - that it does not pay to ignore and censor a viable candidate.

Plese vote Ron Paul
- Adam, Huntington Beach, CA

I'm voting for Ron Paul. Please consider him.
- Samantha Bell, Concord, New Hampshire

This is a fine piece of journalism. I am glad to hear that this message is getting out to my independent-minded friends in New Hampshire. Looking forward to the results.
