Police: Woman never hit brakes

The family of a man police say was run down by a Nashua driver still can't believe he died because of an argument about the Red Sox and Yankees.

"They've always fought over which team's better," Rene Beaudoin said of Boston and New York fans, "but you'd never imagine in a million years someone would kill someone over it."

According to the accident reconstruction team, Ivonne Hernandez, 43, never used her brakes. Senior Assistant Attorney General Susan Morrell said there was evidence Hernandez was traveling at a high speed early Friday in a parking lot when she drove into Matthew Beaudoin, 29, and Maria Hughes, 21, who suffered minor injuries. Her Dodge Intrepid then hit a parking meter, bending it toward the ground and buckling the cement beneath it.

Hernandez was ordered held without bail by Judge R. Laurence Cullen at her arraignment yesterday in Nashua District Court. Hernandez, who appeared via closed-circuit television, is charged with second-degree murder, aggravated driving while under the influence and two counts of reckless conduct.

Beaudoin died Friday night of massive head trauma at Lahey Clinic in Burlington, Mass.

Beaudoin had spent Thursday evening singing karaoke at Slade's Food & Spirits, a West Hollis Street sports bar, according to the DJ, Chris Lovett. Morrell said sometime after Beaudoin and his friends left the bar, they got into an argument with Hernandez that started in a Nashua City Hall parking lot.

Words were exchanged between Hernandez and the group about the Yankees and the Red Sox; Hernandez had a Yankees sticker on the back windshield of her car, the prosecutor said.

Before getting in her car, which was parked in the City Hall lot, Hernandez struck an unidentified woman in the head, Morrell said. Hernandez then drove across Elm Street into a dirt parking lot, turned her car around on Beech Street and drove back through the parking lot toward the group of friends, said Morrell.

At the scene, Hernandez told police she was driving the vehicle involved, and that she had consumed at least four beers, but she refused a field sobriety test, the prosecutor said.

In a later statement, after waiving her Miranda rights, Hernandez told police she was very upset about the baseball comments, said Morrell. Hernandez said she wanted to scare the group of people she drove her car toward, but thought they'd be smart enough to get out of the way, the prosecutor said.

Hernandez appeared to be wiping away tears during the hearing.

Public defender James Quay said yesterday he had not yet met with the defendant. He asked the judge to give him a copy of the entire court file, which has been sealed, so he can prepare his case.

As soon as Hernandez appeared on the closed-circuit TV, her mother, who was sitting in the courtroom, started sobbing quietly. She continued crying throughout the hearing and as she left the courtroom.

Neither she nor other family members at the hearing would comment on the case.

One of Hernandez's neighbors, Elaine Dery, said Hernandez was well-liked by residents on her street.

"I know she liked to have a few (drinks), but this is out of character for her," she said. "It's a big shock."

Dery said she also felt bad for Hernandez's 15-year-old daughter, who lived with her. She was unsure where the daughter is staying while her mother is in jail.

Faith Beaudoin said she was relieved to hear Hernandez would be held without bail.
