On Thursday, about 75 marijuana rights advocates gathered, as they have been daily for the past week, at 4:20 p.m. to smoke pot in protest of drug laws. Police did show up, but no arrests were made.

@Kathy Lee and the rest of the ignorant folks.
Lock your selves in your houses.
Because all the music you listen to, cars you drive, food you eat and every thing you buy read watch or look at has been created or contributed to by a pot smoker.
Maybe you should go live in your own Nazi Nation with out the 'people on welfare' who pay rent in your apartment buildings, who shop locally in your towns and contribute their paltry allowances to your economies.
Why aren't you whining about the J.P. Morgan and their triple profit quarterly after the government bailout. That is real welfare.
So stop stomping on the poor and the voiceless and start chesting up to someone who needs to be confronted and stop being so ignorant. Are you too lazy to read or just too tired because the government wants us to work so hard we don't have time to protect our rights as they get flushed down the drain.
- Layla, Chester

Illicit drug-related deaths are one-fifth the rate of alcohol deaths and less than one-twenty-fifth of tobacco-related deaths. Three-fourths of all illicit drug use is marijuana use, and marijuana accounts for 0% of the deaths. Most of the other illicit drug use is the recreational use of legal prescription drugs. Just 0.7% of the population over 12 used cocaine in the past month, and 0.4% used hallucinogens. One in a thousand used heroin. According LEAP, in 2006 1.3% of the population was addicted to drugs, the same as in 1970 when the War on Drugs began, and the same as in 1914 when the first federal drug laws were passed. Drug prohibition costs hundreds of billions in both direct costs and opportunity costs such as the lost wages of the imprisoned. It endangers the lives of innocents caught in turf wars. It promotes chaos and instability in much of the world -- and all of this in a futile attempt to save a tiny fraction of the population from themselves.
- Ken, Lincoln, NE

Exactly right. So these --------- are corrupting our society more than it is and the cops stand there and watch, being verbally abused? must be a job they dont mind. Guess its easier than working.
- Stephen, Keene

I am sure those protesting don't work. They use the tax payers money they are given from welfare and buy pot. Why do the keene police do nothing? These potheads are disrespectful and should be made to be productive citizens. I say arrest them and lock them up until they sign saying they will stop and if they don't, throw them out of the town....but not here please....
- Kathy Lee, Manchester

You'd think the way Republicans are always touting their "freedom agenda" that they'd be all for the freedom of normal people making their own personal, private decisions to do what they want with their own lives even if they want to smoke dope. Isn't that the essence of liberty?

Republicans are not for any kind of freedom except for the freedom of rich people to do what they want with their money as long as they don't engage in gay sex, have abortions or smoke a little dope. It's only financial freedom that matters to them.

Their anti-pot prejudice so irrational and contradictory it leads me to conclude that it must be related to religion because cannabis is, ultimately, a drug that came from Muslim lands, and we all know how thoroughly Republicans hate Muslims -- even more than they hate gays.

Republicans are not for freedom at all, unless it's their own that's at stake, but they're far too square to light up.
- Stephen, Portsmouth

We need to take a step back and see what kind of progress we are making. The legalization of medicinal marijuana does not help the average person. Matter of fact, the marijuana seed companies who lobby to keep the drug illegal are what we should be protesting against, and pressuring the authorities to stop them.

Why are cops worried about me smoking weed when I can go on the internet and buy the seeds to grow the plant? If weed was legal, these seed companies would have no market.

Medicinal purposes is a scam. I support the legalization but not for medicinal use, this gives corporate control to marijuana distribution. I dont want corporations like Marlboro controlling our nations weed supply because it will end up with additives and preservatives that are just as bad as cigarettes.

The average person should be allowed to use marijuana on their own property, and you are allowed to. Changing the laws just makes it okay to smoke in public, which is the last thing I care about.

Smoke weed in your house.

Prohibition creates crime, and aids the profiteering of gangster organizations. We all know this from our escapades with alcohol.

Let the average joe grow and distribute it, watch crime rates drop.
- Ryan, Manchester

@ Joe--you are being obtuse buddy--which is it? Pot smokers are losers right? So the characters I mentioned are losers by that equation, right? Or are they exceptions to your pot=loser mantra? You can't have it both ways. Pot doesn't kill, doesn't rot your brian and doesn't make you a loser. Being a loser makes you a loser, not that beer you drank or that bowl you smoked. You didn't make the debate team, did you? George Washington not only enjoyed smoking pot, but grew crops of hemp--these are documented historical facts. So he's a loser, right? Obama? Bush? Clinton? All losers because they smoked pot!! What was that swimmer's name again? 8 gold medals? pictures of him doing bong hits after the Olympics? Good grief--I'm amazed that so many of you and your ilk even get internet access in your caves...
- JB, NB, NH

Compare and contrast:

"It doesn't matter if people think that marijuana use should be against the law or not. The FACT is that is IS against the law RIGHT NOW. Period.

"Start arresting."
- William Smith, Manchester, NH

"It doesn't matter if people think that being Jewish should be against the law or not. The FACT is that is IS against the law RIGHT NOW. Period.

"Start arresting."
- A citizen in Nazi Germany, or a soldier 'just following orders
- Rich, Grafton

If we could all embrace a life lived with moderation, we wouldn't even be having this discussion.

Use but don't abuse.

It's the disrespectful "potheads" yelling at the police that are responsible for keeping marijuana laws in place. Thanks for making the case against legalization stronger folks!

Morons.
- Shannon, Portsmouth, NH

Never, Owen! I'm disgusted that Democrat operatives keep using character assassination on me for an issue they all support. This has nothing to do with making my neighborhood a better place.

I think what's going on in Keene is really stupid. A bunch of youngsters smoking pot in a park where people bring their kids to play, isn't going to help anyone.

Their actions trivialize the seriousness of the struggle terminally ill people in this state have to go through when using it to save their lives.

I've lost two grandparants to cancer and could care less what the name of the medication is. If your doctor thinks it will help save your life, it's none of the governments business.

Phil Greazzo
West Manchester
- Phil Greazzo, West Manchester

I am not a pot smoker, and maybe the laws are extreme...but helllooo ..they are in place. You are being the foolish timewasters that an average stoner is..And what the heck is the stupid 4:20 stuff..oh right..code for doper. Almost can't blame the police for not wasting their time. You want to be a druggie? Be a druggie. You want a cause? COME ON!!
- Cheryl Downing, Concord

So fed up with this garbage and the cops tolerating it! The Keene Middle School is approx. 500-1000 feet from the common in Downtown Keene, thought school zones were legally supposed to be drug free zones?

If I walked down the street drinking a beer I would get arrested for public open container, why are the Keene Police allowing this?

If it was Manchester, Portsmouth, or Concord there would have been zero tolerance by the police.

Last week our kids saw these losers smoking marijuana on Main Street and before that they saw a naked Free Stater waslking down Main Street with a gun, what is next? How far will the Keene Police let these idiots go?

I feel sorry for the Downtown Business owners already struggling in this economy, they are the victims here. Many families like ours avoid Downtown Keene while this garbage takes place and the police ignore it.

Why can't these losers smoke their weed on their own property and away from childrens eyes?
- sarah j., keene

@ JB, NB, NH ..... equating Van Gogh, Washington, other presidents and Olympic athletes and their accomplishments with that weed? Wow. Either completely naive, or you smoke too much. No doubt a combination of both.
- Joe, Manchester

What I want to know is where are the Free Staters in all of this? Where is their militia that like to walk about with pistols at the side, displaying their "rights." Hey.. Don't Tread On My (blunt)

And when is the aldermanic candidate from Ward 10, Phil Greazzo, going to bring the 420 to Manchester? Perhaps it could be arranged at the dog park he espouses. Until then, Victory or Merrimack Common? Stark Park? Unfurl the flag and spark up!
- Owen MacGowan, Manchester

It’s quite ironic that the stoner Left-Wingers all of a sudden believe in individual liberty and less government intrusion when it comes to their assumed “pot smoking rights”. Yet when it comes to legitimate constitutionally protected rights, such as the second amendment they’re all for the government’s infringement. It’s absolutely amazing how the double standard works when the government threatens something that Left cherishes. Then again, the Leftists / Progressive- Federal Statists would love nothing more than a thoroughly inebriated, easily pacified, and numb-minded bunch of drones – no doubt that a Leftist government see this as a good thing as opposed to the people being well armed against government tyranny.
- Mac Wade, Newmarket

'joe'--anecdotes are not facts. Don't blame your binge drinking on pot.
- JB, NB, NH

These folks are, as much as anything, looking to "provoke." And on that note, a salute to the Keene PD for not taking the bait. Understand and advocate the medicinal use of cannibas. Would even listen to the argument that it's use beyond medicinal purposes is not harmful. More... that the laws against are archaic. However, these clowns are doing more for all they who argue "Against."
- Jack, Manchester

Bravo to the police for doing the right thing and leaving these people alone, even in the face of insults and taunts. That shows real class.

Regarding people saying Rich Paul doesn't have a job, I know Rich Paul and he is self-employed. Not a loser in any sense.
- Jack, Concord

Oh, hey Lester--you mean pot smokers like the last 3 and first 7 Presidents of the United States? Or that swimmer that won all those gold medals? Or just about every major artist and musician in history?

Yeah--being a carney with 'trained bears' sure trumps the accomplishments of a Vincent Van Gogh or a George Washington.

I have zero issue with people keeping their minds closed and living their lives as they see fit--what I do take issue with is anyone that tries to impose those same standards on others by guilt, by bullying or by force and propaganda.
- JB, NB, NH

As a parent, I do not want my young children seeing adults smoke pot in public. Nor do I want them to see public drinking, therefore, we do avoid most places that drinking may occur. Its insane that police are not arresting these criminals. They are committing a crime, regardless of if you like the law or not.

I'm half tempted to take my young children to this park and call the police when these people light up illegal drugs in front of my children!
- AC, manchester

I can't believe the disrespect people show towards what our police officers. These "protesters" are dopes. The medical marijuana issue is a crock. It's just an excuse to get it legalized. These morons should have been wacked over the head with billy clubs in hopes of knocking sense into them. This world is turning upside down by the few who are nothing other than anarchists.
- D. Morris, nashua

To James Jones, Alstead and others:

I am a forme pot user. While in college I smoked some pot and drank a lot of beer. They don't mix and you can O.D. pretty easily. You see, pot supresses your ability and need to throw up if you have to. When you drink too much and you heave, it is your body rejecting the alcohol. If you drank too much and smoked even a little bit of pot - it's a deadly mixture. I almost died one night in college because of this fact.
- joe, manchester

These are early protests rather sloppy but they could not be more right. They could learn a lot from The Boston Freedom Rally last week. Stay polite stay chill.

NH has the harshest pot laws in New England. Maine - $500 fine no arrest. Mass - $100 fine no arrest. NH - up to $1000 fine and/or up to 1 year in a cage. Punishment does not fit the crime.

I hope to see more and bigger protests like this all over the state.
- George C., Nashua

Ed, just from reading your comment I can tell that you are one ignorant person. I'm 15 and I'm not nearly as naive as you are my friend.
- Derek, Keene

Lester, Thornton:
Amen. Mr. Clark was a true American. Yet all he could muster was a few comments.
And the no account, no morals, feel good kids breaking the law on Keene square are getting top of the fold attention - and the Police are standing by looking totally stupid - ostensibly with the blessing of the town fathers. Glad I live where I live.
Notice to you idot kids in Keene - stay there.
- Sandy, Thornton

To anyone calling cannabis users "losers": Stop drinking alcohol, stop watching TV, stop playing video games. That stuff rots your brain, people say. But people say a lot of things Is there evidence that supports this common nonsense? Did you know that there are no long-term effects of smoking? Smokers who are lazy are predisposed to that kind of thing. Why not legalize weed so we don't have to waste our time and money arresting otherwise benign, harmless citizens. By the way, weed costs money. To get money you need a job. Guess what stoners are good at? Working to support their selves as well as their hobby. Do a google video search for "the union". Weed smokers are productive citizens like you.
- Anonymous, Nevada

I am from keene and i was at center square today and i am sooo glad that finaly the people are fighting back for there rights. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.....and anyone that wants to be involved should show up
- Josh, keene

It's unfortunate that the Free Staters have chosen this as their cause of the week, when their passion and drive could be better spent opposing Blair Holt.
- Nemi, Keene

How ironic. In the center of page 1 of today's UL was a story the passing of a man with a long lifetime of accomplishments and a legacy that will enrich the lives of generations not even born yet. And at the top of the same page, an article about a bunch of losers with no apparent ambition beyond getting stoned.
- Lester, Thornton

It doesn't matter if people think that marijuana use should be against the law or not. The FACT is that is IS against the law RIGHT NOW. Period.

Start arresting.
- William Smith, Manchester, NH

It's time for employers in Keene and the surrounding area to require mandatory drug testing for all their employees. Also send their HR representatives down to the square for a few pictures of the crowd. Also time for the Keene school board to require drug testing for students who participate in after school programs. For Peighton Bergeron, a student at Keene High School make sure you put your statement "It's my body and I want to do what I want with it. I get good grades, I don't get in trouble, I'm a good kid. I have no worries about my future and I smoke pot" on your FASFA form. It will help you with the financial aid you're not going to get...
- Ed, Manchester

This is really a catch 22 situation. Liberals have no ground to stand up in arguing that marijuana be legalized when they are the biggest propenents of massibe government regulation. Conservatives, can hardly argue that Marijuana should remain illegal if they truly embrace the founding principals of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Who is the government to tell us what someone can smoke? Why can one smoke tobacco and not marijuana? Why can one drink alcohol and not smoke marijuana? Is Marijuana healthy? probably not as much as proponents of its medical use claim, yet it is certainly causes a lot less morbity and mortality than either alcohol or tobacco. other than it simply being illegal, what harm does marijuana cause the rest of us if others choose to smoke it? The only harm that it currently causes is in our pocketbooks. We pay big bucks to have police investigate and aprehend pot smoker, big bucks to the attorney general's office to proscecute pot smokers and big bucks to incarcerate pot smokers. That does not take into account the lives ruined because someone got caught in possesion of marijuana.

The kids who are protesting ought to reward the police for not busting them. Shouting at them when they are using officer discretion and allowing a peaceful protest is unproductive. If you really want to advocate that marijuana be legalized, present some facts on what it costs NH every year to keep marijuana illegal. Present the studies done by several medical schools demonstrating the relative safety (compared to alcohol and tobacco). Show the studies that it is not an addictive drug and please for the uninformed show the high pecentage of pot smokers who are gainfully employed. I think NH could save a lot of money by outright decriminalizing marijuana. It all comes down to personal responsibility or shared responsibility. Are you accountable for your choices or do you require the government to decide for you?
- Michael Layon, Derry

Even ok Keene

he wasn't thrown in a cage he was put in jail, that's what happens when you break the law, and holding up a leaf is possesion..he got what hedeserved, so stop your crying.

You want to smke it fine do it at home. As far as I am concerned legalize it, regulate it, and tax the heck out of it just like cigarettes, and while they are at it legalize protitution regulate it, & and tax the heck out of it as well. it's all happening now mine as well let the state have a cut to help with the tax burden :)
- Steve, Manchester

Looks like we have a regular TeaHempaman Square, right here in our own backyard. Think of all the World of Warcraft that isn't getting played each afternoon.
- Steve B, Derry

Even as a child I recognized the fallacy of prohibition laws and I was certain that by the time I became an adult our society would have come to its senses about this issue. I've been an adult now for twenty years but nothing has changed. In fact, much to my amazement, Governor Lynch recently vetoed a very sensible bill that would have reduced the harmful effects of prohibition.

I'm thankful that the people of Keene are leading the way toward a reformation of our society. It is long overdue. Nice work, people!
- Lance, Dublin

I have a wife, 3 kids, a house, a career, no credit card bills, frequently volunteer, so on, and so on. Would you better-than-thou's consider me a productive member of society? I also smoke pot, have for 20+ years. Would you better-than-thou's who paint all pot smokers with the same broad brush still consider me a productive member of society? Just think, if Ted K, RIP, smoked pot instead of drank that girl would still be alive. Alcohol is the real dangerous drug here, not pot.
- John G., Merrimack NH

Ahh Greg from Manchester, not all people work 9-5 you know
- John G., Merrimack NH

Kat in Raymond,

Better yet...legalize it and *don't* tax it.
- Eric, Manchester

legalize it. its only a matter of time before it happens.

here's an idea. why not make pot legal, let ppl sell it, and then the government can use all the tax dollars they get from marajuna to serisouly crack down on the trafficking of real drugs.
- nick, derry, nh

M.J. - Your grape jelly idea is only stupid if you don't include Cambell's "Galveston" as part of your Glen-Mix.

Seriously though the Central Sq. Common is used by a lot of pedestrians through the day and some may not want to get a contact high while walking through. You can protest just as easily by having rational discussion, available literature and most importantly - not being an in-your-face jerk about it.

This is what our Glenn Beck/Air America "I'm right because I can talk the loudest" culture has turned us into. Let's not weigh the pro's and con's - let's just throw it in your face.

Save the toking for home and the talking for the park.
- Tim, Swanzey

It is taboo to smoke in a public place but ok to smoke pot in public??????????

Keene, NH Berkely CA east.
- T, Merrimack, NH

The fact that this article and the previous one on Keene marijuana smokers has garnered so many comments is a testament that humane people do care about medical marijuana and our constituitional rights. The bullying comments will continue as they spew their hatred and ignorance. Can't wait for the ones directed at me!
- Aaron, Milford

At 16 it's not legal to smoke tobacco let alone cannabis!!

The situation in Keene is a joke
- Harry, Atkinson

the cops are probably just waiting for a larger crowd to show up ... then bust them when they realize that the clove they were smelling is actually mariuana! haha ... clove and pot don't even smell remotely close!! the cops are being way cool to you 420'ers, you shouldn't hassle them ... honestly, pot is not different than smoking a cigarette while you're drinking ... except that generally you just fall asleep after you've smoked the pot - or eat a bag of cookies; its not like coke or meth or heroin, not even remotely close! When was the last time you heard of someone OD'ing on pot? When was the last time you read of someone going on a rampage after getting high off some pot and killing masses of people or having super human strength and murdering people after smoking a joint? Never! Make it legal and stop wasting tax dollars on something that is less dangerous and less harmful than what is currently legal! Its so nice to know that you won't have an explosion from growing a few (yes, a few - an indoor farm is different) pot plants, and at least the cleanup isn't toxic (meth labs) .... wake up!
- James Jones, Alstead

When I lived in Manchester I worked a second shift at Waumbec in order to get through college. Did not know it made me a lowlife.
To the obnoxious among the protestors, you are making your opponents argument for them.In 1968 Chicago riots got Nixon elected.(even W.Loeb did not trust him)
What happened to"Live Free or Die"?
- Jack Sullivan, San Luis Obispo,California

I have a feeling this is going to start happening in Manchester as well.

If the MPD wouldn't arrest me for taking marijuana into their police station to discuss the failed drug war policies they selectively enforce, they obviously want to focus their attention on actual crimes and would likely leave smokers alone here too.

There's always the chance they would make some arrests, but that would only happen once after they realize the smokers would all plead not guilty, make the state pay for trials and then refuse to pay any fines.

This just in...420 at 4:20 taking place Monday September 28th at Veteran's Park in downtown Manchester! See you there.
- Mike Tiner, Manchester, NH

I've never smoked pot in my life, but I recognize the right of others to do so. It's their body not mine. It's time we stop trying to run the lives and finances of others. As long as people are not harming others, they have a right to make their own decisions.
- Paul, Los Angeles, CA (originally from Keene)

Are any laws being broken? If the Keene police won't make arrests, then we need to send in the State Police.

It may be a bad law, but it still should be enforced.

Don't like it? Get it changed.
- Bill, Deerfield

To those of you parroting the lines 'the law is the law', 'if it's illegal it's wrong' or something of the like....

It 1942 in Germany is was legal to kill a human being because of their skin color, ethnic origin, or chosen faith. I guess you'd be defending the actions of those who committed such atrocities too, right? After all, it was the law, so it must be right, right?
- Jeff, Springfield, VT

Legalize it under these circumstacnes:

1) No government assistance for those who smoke, including health care
2) Mandatory 1 year in jail if caught operating a vehicle while stoned
3) Mandatory 10 years for hurting someone while stoned
4) Life if you kill someone under the influence.

The same could and should go for alcohol.

Tough punishment will be the only way to stop people. Unfair? don't do it.
- CJ, Bedford

Alcohol is the drug for nice people. How would we realize how nice we are without these druggies?
- SA, DOVER

All you who comment about how stupid and bad pot smoking is for people are missing the point: True freedom includes the right to be stupid, so long as it doesn't hurt anyone else.

It's stupid for me to wipe grape jelly all over my face and run around in my front yard dancing to Glen Campbell songs, but freedom means I have the right to do that. You may feel that pot is stupid, but people should have the freedom to decide for themselves as they do with alcohol. They'll certainly hurt less people than they would if they were drunk.

Preferably, no one drinks or smokes while driving. That said, a drunk driver is deadly on the road. A stoned driver simply misses their exit.
- MJ, Manchester

LAH in Keene,

I understand that you have legitimate concerns about your kids being exposed to the protest. However, unless you don’t allow them to watch sports on TV, your kids are subjected to beer ads that tell your kids that it’s OK to drink, and drink a lot. ‘Coors Light won’t slow you down’. The new Natural Light carrier so you can fit (2) 24 packs. It is a FACT that 30% of the American public consume over 90% of the alcohol sold. These companies know who their best customers are. The ads make it seem like it’s OK to drink a lot. So you’re exposing your kids to something far worse. These are the symptoms for someone in ’rehab’ for marijuana:

Sleeplessness
Irritability
Anxiousness
Vivid dreams

Sounds like the same thing you’d get if you stopped drinking coffee.
- BH, Goffstown

Why does everyone like Greg from Manchester assume that everyone works a 9-5 shift? I am gainfully employed and I get out of work at 4pm as I'm sure many other people do. Silly argument and really has nothing to do with the subject at hand

I also wonder how many people who are against someone smoking a joint get all bent out of shape when lawmakers want a seat belt or helmet law or what they would do if their precious cigarettes and alcohol was taken from them?

Governments should have no say in what a person chooses to put into their body, whether it is grass, booze or fast food. To continue this phony war on drugs only leads to over taxation of our criminal system, gives criminals the funding they need for their more violent activities and has done nothing to stop the use of any drugs.
- Bill, Manchester

Kudos to the protesters for having the courage to raise public awareness off this issue.

Kudos to the KeenePD for responding in the correct measure.

One fingered salute to those protesters who gave the PD a hard time. The PD had the authority to react in a stronger way, but chose the higher ground. Considering that Keene is a college town, that shows a lot of restraint and understanding about what it means to be an American, and I respect the KeenePD all the more now.

Remember, the PD exist to keep the peace, not to arrest everyone for every little infraction. Otherwise, everyone would be in jail for every small offence from jaywalking to speeding one mile over the limit. If that's the kind of PD you want, perhaps Turkey or Singapore would be more to your liking.
- Mike, Manchester

Having grown up in the "Live Free or Die" state and later moved to Ma, I gotta say there seems to be alot of uneducated individuals reading this article. I'm glad to see that NH is finally looking to decriminalize pot as MA did last year. The Cannabis plant offers entire industries ways to reinvent themselves.
For those uneducated people do some research into the founding of the marijuana laws that made it illegal in the 1930's. Better yet do a youtube search for the propaganda film used by the government to pass that law called Reefer Madness. And do some homework on how those laws got put into the system in first place. Hemp was being used to produce paper at the time and lobbyists got a tax law put in place so that the plant could no longer be grown without having a tax stamp from the us government.
Secondly take a look in the mirror next time you grab a beer or glass of wine after a hard days work, or light that cigarette up because you're stressed out and need to relax, you're doing the same thing! Do you have any idea how much of your taxes are being spent on the law enforcement of minimal amounts of a non addictive substance, or keeping people in jail for possesion of marijuana. Officers should be spending their time on the large growers and sellers of marijuana and other more harmful drugs.
Never thought I'd say this but MA finally got something right that NH still can't.
- C, Salem MA

420 is not a reference to Hitler... yes it happens to be the same date but that is not why people smoke pot.... it's just a time that was picked and stuck......

Correction: Not all potheads are Losers.... in fact I know A LOT of people who have great paying jobs and go to school and are really motivated... being a pothead has never affected their goals in life

It's the same as drinking when people come home from work they want a glass of wine or what not.... well potheads like to smoke a joint.... why not... how many times have you read in the paper that someone died because of drunk driving or some how was intoxicated in one way or another? Then ask your self the same question about smoking.... you never read stuff like that.... pot does not make you incoherent..... it mellows you out...

In fact they should make alcohol illegal and make pot legal….. your risk of dying from consumption of alcohol (Liver Disorders, Gastrointestinal Problems, Heart Disease, Cancer, Neurological Problems, Diabetes, Skin, Muscle, and Bone Disorders., Reproductive Problems, Lung Problems) is far higher than smoking pot…..
- Dee, Londondery

All of you must be smoking pot because you are missing the point. We need this drug legalized for the people that need it for medical reasons. I have a very close friend well ex-fiance that I take care of and was diagnosed with Aklyosing Spondolytis look it up. Its a disease of the spine. I attacks the spine until the bones are all fused. Could you imagine waking up well if you can sleep not being able to move or just simply lie in bed for comfort the pain sitting, standing, walking, etc is out of this world. He smokes and it takes away some of the pain not all of it. But gives him enough relief so that he can relax for a bit. Now they want to take away his pain medication what the hell is happening to our health care system and for families that have to sit by like me and there is nothing to do but keep reasuring them they will get through this. It is painful for us and not fair at all. If you want to smoke pot and don't have an ailment all the power to you its your life. No one should be dictating to us what we can put in our body or not especially if it is going to help us. It all comes down to the almight insurance, government and how much they want to tax us on it. If they do make it legal I can imagine what we would have to pay for the damn stuff. I say just do as you have been doing and fight for the cause. Oh, also people do have VACATION, PERSONAL time or get out of work b4 4:30 so if you see someone out there again stop the judging that is why this country is in such a damn mess. If its bothering you then keep it to yourself. GOOO 4:30 PUFFERS!!!
- Linda, Nashua

To the 420's who want to change the law, I believe you can run for state rep and then VOTE to change the law once you are in office. You must be voting age and a registered voter.
State senators have to be 30 but a state rep only has to be 18.

Can you imagine if all us unemployed people ran for office? (According to some of the posters, being unemployed makes you a low-life...)
- Mari, Mont Vernon

It's just a matter of time until the Keene PD calls in the SOU, the State Police and Homeland Security to 'deal' with these protestors. They're just waiting for the crowds to get big enough so that they can tear-gas as many peaceful pot smokers at one time. Then they will all be hauled off in patty wagons and placed on a 'terrorist watch list'. Don't think it will happen, check back in a couple weeks!
- Alex, Gorham

I would be willing to bet this is another one of those Free State Project Stunts. Just another call for attention to themselves.
- Frank, Manchester

Pot is not the problem; it is a symptom of a need to heal a deeper problem. Why is it ok for pharmaceutical companies to have the monopoly on medicating physical, emotional and behavioral issues? Are you aware of the nasty side effects those children on Ritalin experience? How many teen suicides did antidepressants cause before it required a warning on the package?
What is wrong with a naturally growing substance being legal and available? It has been used for medicinal purposes long before there was a U.S. government.
I am greatly disappointed in our Governor for vetoing medicinal marijuana. Everyone opposed needs to spend time with people dying of or being treated for cancer. When you see first hand how pot eases the pain and helps them get through their day you may change your mind and see who the real “loser” actually is.
Legalize it and tax it!
- Kat, Raymond

J. Frost-- actually many "founding fathers" and those alike grew hemp, smoked marijuana (not sure about the opium) so your comment went down like the last roach.

I commend the officers of Keene, they made their presence visible but did not push their authority during a peaceful protest. Though I do shun those who mocked the officers... are you asking to get arrested?

These types of protests happen ALL over the country, with police presence and zero arrests... example, on April 20th of every year in Boulder park Colorado hundreds gather for a giant smoke out and @4:20pm they ALL exhale at the same time...

But it's somewhat shocking to see some of the comments here... from NH... people are still so against it... those who have no clue or have yet to study ANYTHING regarding marijuana use.
- Brian, Ashland

I have no problem whatsoever with marijuana depending on the situation. If you smoke and can hold a job and actually contribute in a positive way to society fine, but if you are like these 420 people who feel that they need to advertise the fact that they smoke and get attention this way, you clearly need to get a life and stop pushing your beliefs on other people. There are children around and there is also a middle school right up the street which has a clear view of the common. Does anyone involved realize that those kids are probably thinking about how cool it must be to be doing what they're are doing? Smoke pot if you want but please keep it out of sight and mind of children who are vulnerable. If you want a law to pass do it right, and honestly, find something better to do with your time, not only is it annoying, but you're creating traffic to back up and some people have jobs or families to get home to. I wonder how the parents of these kids feel about having their kids acting like total morons for everyone to see/read about. I would hope that the parents of the 16 year old are not proud of having a daughter who shares with the world that shes doing something illegal, thats pretty stupid if you ask me.
- LS, Keene

"Brendan, Manchester"

Well, Brendan...you don't have to smell any "crap" because you don't live in Keene. When people start sparking up on Elm Street, then you can start whining. It's a natural substance and could greatly assist in a variety of things from taxes to products to oils to everything else. Do some research people, it's not the worst thing on the planet. No deaths directly related to it, no overdoses are possible unless it's laced with a second drug...and taking the religious stance, if God didn't want it to be here, it wouldn't come from the EARTH!
- Bill, Manchester

I agree with some of the other posters here, if pot does not affect your ability to be a productive member of society, then why are none of these people working at 4:20 in the afternoon?
- Bob, Manchester, NH

Enough is enough, I could care less who smokes and who doesn't. That's not the point, the point is now 75 people are breaking the law and flaunting it. Some are even taunting the police and honest citizens. If the Keene police chief choose's not to enforce this law (or any) then it's time for a new chief. Until the law has been changed, it's still illegal. Now, if the cops arrest anyone today will it stand up in court ? If they have been smoking in the same place, in front of cops, for a week, and haven't been arrested. Will it stand up in court ? I don't think so.
- C Mac, Allenstown

Kudos to the Keene PD for keeping it civil. There's a lot of pent up frustration on many levels. Legalizing POT is only one small level. This whole event is good to read about,, no matter what side you're on, this could only happen in America. Love it or leave it,,, the debate goes one... Keep it civil.
- Tim, Derry

Tim Oliver: Did you not read the article? Officer Peloquin stated, ""All I smell is some clove."

Smoking cloves is not a crime. Unless the police have a reason to arrest someone on a crime, they can't.

I am sure that if the police had enough to make an arrest they would have.
- George, Henniker

This quote is nice Brendan:

No, but laws are laws

Yeah.. Think of all the federal laws that are wrong. Think of all the laws in the past that were wrong. Laws are Laws, right?
No harm... no foul.

How does putting a plant in your body affect others? Pot should be legal.

The police should concentrate on real crime.
(from a non smoker)
- Chris, Hopkinton

Being rude and insulting is conterproductive to the cause.
- DAVE, Manchester

Just imagine what the country would be like if the Founding Fathers had been potheads or opium smokers...eternally stoned and happy instead of aware and angry. They might not have gotten incensed at the British to the point of rebellion, they'd just have been smiling and mellow and...

....oh, right. Then we wouldn't have a country.
- J. Frost, Londonderry

Tim in Allenstown,
I agree with you. Laws are selectively enforced, and one reason for that is that there are far too many of them. It breeds disrespect for the law in general. There should be only a few laws (mostly having to do with preventing actual harm to people and property), and they should be enforced rigorously.
- Eric, Manchester

Whatever your position...please engage in respectful protest. No need for hollering and cat calls. You are just inviting yourself to be arrested that way. If you keep it up, I hope you are.
Grow up kids...I think most of you are there because you are bored or just want to follww someone elses coat tails.
I bet most of the youth could care less about any issue these days unless it serves their selfish needs.
Oh, and trhe 16 year old...grow up...you are so probably so un informed about what is or isnt good for you, you are in no position to make those decisions. Thats what parents are for...by the way...I hope the parents of this MINOR saw this and deal with it. If no, lets hope L.E. does spmething about this MINOR!
- John, Manchester

I live in Keene, and my children go to the middle school, just off of Central Square. Thankfully, at 4:20, they have long been out of school and gone home. Otherwise they may get the idea that what is being done is perfectly alright, when they have been taught otherwise, both at home and at school.
- LAH, Keene

Must be nice to not have a job and be able to gather somewhere everyday in the afternoon for some leisure time.
- ken, nashua

420 has nothing to do with Hitler AW. According to Steven Hager, editor of High Times, the term 420 originated at San Rafael High School, in 1971, among a group of about a dozen pot-smoking wiseacres who called themselves the Waldos, who are now pushing 50. The term was shorthand for the time of day the group would meet, at the campus statue of Louis Pasteur, to smoke pot. Intent on developing their own discreet language, they made 420 code for a time to get high, and its use spread among members of an entire generation.
- Jim Wilson, Manchester

How convenient, so many of the readers in here dismiss the protesters as low-life trash.

These are people demonstrating, standing up for their beliefs, and freedom to choose what they do with their bodies.

Whether or not you approve of marijuana or not, show a little respect for the individuals protesting for freedom, this is not only good for american society, the protest for freedom is one of the most american activities you can do.

How dare you pass judgement on people you dont know, just because they are different than you? Would you protest if I took away your beer and liquor?

I applaud the Keene police for their righteousness, clearly they are not as narrow minded as the one dimensional readers of this article.
- pete, portsmouth nh

People need to realize that marijuana is the most beneficial plant in the world. it is a new resource for paper, clothing, etc. Marijuana needs to be legalized.
- Patrick, Manchester

If this doesn't show the public what pot does to you, then they are blind.
College students openly smoking it. That's what their parents paid all those thousands to educate them for?
I hope that all their names and faces are on record for a long time so when they go to get a job, it will be right there for all to see that they are losers that shouldn't be hired to take a job away from a decent person. I think they should be booted out of college as well. How does that look for the college they attend?
This not the way to get your point across.
Like it or not, pot is illegal and you will be arrested for having it.
If you want it to change, then do something legally about it. Doing it this way will only tarnish your record and and reputation.
So sure- smoke em if you got em- because there are MANY others who would love to have your place in college or your job.
- Luke, Bristol

Protesting for the repeal of marijuana laws is not that dissimilar from the era of prohibition.
Back then, alcohol was seen in much the same perspective as pot is today, and many of our distinguished families (Kennedy’s) gained their wealth and eventual respectability from their flaunting of the laws.

An interesting sidebar is how prevalent the smoking of weed is in our mainstream entertainment. How many TV shows and movies show ordinary people taking a puff as a normal course of relaxation – and this has been going on for years! The movie “9 to 5” comes to mind where the women gather around and enjoy a wonderful night of bonding under the influence… and Weeds, one of our most popular TV shows and an Emmy nominee, is all about the stuff!

And when was the last time anyone read a story about domestic abuse from a husband hopped up on grass… oh yeah – he threw a bag of Cheeto’s at his wife because she ate the last Twinkee…

Let’s see… would I rather see someone numbed on weed or in a liquor induced rant… hmmm… tough choice…

It’s time to change the laws and move on. Our tax dollars are better spent elsewhere.
- Angelo, Manchester

The officers showed good restraint, most likely at the direction of their supervisors. Its time for the State Police to pay a visit to the park today though.
- Phil, Meredith

Who's driving these stoners home after they light up? there's enough poor drivers on the road straight.
Glenn,derry
- Glenn, derry

Police have their hands full dealing with violent criminals and people are worried about someone who wants to smoke a plant?

Did we not learn anything with prohibition? The war on drugs has only served to fuel the gangs just like prohibition did for the mob. So someone wants to get high, big deal! I'd rather have the police on the streets dealing with people who are out there committing robberies and other violent acts rather than busting someone because they want to get high.

I find it funny that people are so sanctimonious about someone who wants to get high but have no problem picking up that six-pack on the way home from work. After all, how many people commit violent acts because they were drunk? How many people are killed because of someone who is DUI?

Legalize it and tax it.
- Jim D, Hillsboro

Keene, what a disgrace...
- David, Merrimack

If you cannot legally drink alcohol in public, what makes these bone heads think that it is ok for them to smoke pot in public. Even if it were "legal" they still wouldnt be allowed to smoke it where ever they deem appropriate. Regardless if it is legal or illegal people are still doing it, why not do it in the comfort of your own home. I don't have an issue with what you do in your house, the issue is with it being in public. What about everyone elses "rights?"
The same regualtions would need to apply to the consumption of this substance (including age restrictions, driving while impaired etc etc.) if it were decriminalized. Give it a rest and be "peaceful" in your own home. By the way, just because someone smokes does not mean they are not "gainfully" employed either, that is a clear misconception.
- Frank, Manchester

Why is it always the police officer's fault for enforcing crime? Cops do not use force unless necessary. If you break the law, then act or resist arrest or detention, you might receive a few bumps or bruises. If you comply with their request, there's no reason for them to use force. Seems simple to me, but I have never disrespected a police officer Shame on the Keene Police Department for not making arrests. Why is it that the UL photgrapgher can photograph people smoking marijuana, but you can't smell it or even see it? God forbid someone commits a burglary in your presence? The KPD is sending the wrong message that this is acceptable. Maybe the chief needs to re-read his criminal law book, but as far as I know....this is still illegal. If our lawmakers deem it to be legal in the future, personally I have no issue with it. Maybe the NH State Police should roll into Keene, and demonstrate to the Keene Police how to enforce crime! They have let this go on far too long and I predict it will get out of hand very soon. Then, when they are forced to act, violence will most likely occur because there will be a select few who will resist any type of authority. I am sure many of these protesters will act peacefully, but there's always the select few who are attention getters. The AG's office should investigate why the police are alllowing this to take place.
- Jack, Laconia

I'm very confused. If the local police are not willing to arrest and cite individuals for pot use then when will the state police come out to enforce NH's and federal gov't drug laws? It is one thing to protest LEGALLY, which I doubt this group has a permit to do, and another to blatantly break the law protesting.
- Mike, Litchfield

To you special people who work 9-5: The next time you are out at night, please be sure to let any police officers you may see on patrol know that you think that productive citizens work during the day.

Or the next time you have to go to the 24 hour pharmacy to get medicine for your kid in the middle of the night, please tell the clerk before you buy the medicine that they are a loser for working different hours than you.

Or the next time your furnace breaks in the middle of the night, just wait until morning to call for help since you wouldn't want any degenerates coming to your house, which they must be, if they don't work the same shift you do.
- DM, Hampton

"To sit there in the middle of town and say "We're going to perform illegal acts until they're legal" is just absolute stupidity and no one will take you seriously."

Congratulations, you just described the Revolutionary War.
- Jim, Plymouth

The best way to support a non-binding resolution for medicinal marijuana use of course is to have a bunch of unemployed stoners recreationally use it in public.

As someone that doesn't care about this issue one way or the other, the story makes the pot smokers look like complete losers (especially Mr. Wood who is apparently willing to spend his life smoking on the Keene square), the cops look like wimps (I smell some cloves?, yeah almost believable), and the Keeene local government look inept (non-binding resolution on pot smoking?). Its like I'm glad its happening because its so fun to watch, and in the end, nothing will change or be different.

I was however very touched by the qoute of the young man who made a point to thank the police for being peaceful. He must be the losers public relation liaison (big word I know).
- Frank, Manchester

So is Keene a sanctuary city now?

While I personally don't have a problem with what the protesters are doing, they are breaking the law.If the police or local government are not going to enforce the law then they need to abolish it.Short of that there should have been arrests made.

Unfortunately,we have a government that selectively enforces many laws.Immigration, for example.Federal funds should stop going to any and all cities, municipalities that ignore our laws.If our political class were'nt such spineless cowards they could vote to get rid of the laws that we totally ignore, but alas, that is just wishful thinking.
- Tim Oliver, Allenstown

Peighton Bergeron is 16. She's not even legally allowed to smoke tobacco. She should have probably been on her way home to have her mother make her some mac and cheese for dinner.

What you hippies do in the comfort of your own home - fine. However, I do not want to smell that crap while I'm walking down the street.

As for the police - I may not be a Keene resident, but Keene PD should all just throw their badges way. Is anyone getting hurt? No, but laws are laws. This is a terrible precedent to set for your town.

If people want marijuana to be legalized, they can do it the right way and try to have the legislation changed. To sit there in the middle of town and say "We're going to perform illegal acts until they're legal" is just absolute stupidity and no one will take you seriously. You're just a bunch of hippies without jobs or lives.

Figure it out, Keene PD.
- Brendan, Manchester

I'm not sure why the public defender's office is there. They are paid by the taxpaers and have no business getting involved in protests. I love the passeive aggressive protestors. They mock and challenge the police and if they do their jobs they are villified! Amazing world we live in!
- Jeff, Manchester

Well, Instead of smoking Clove, near the Cops, why doesn't someone step up and smoke some pot next to the officers today. I think the officers will most likely make an arrest. Then you can be a Martyr for your cause, and fight injustice. Do me a favor, when you get arrested for violating the law, scream "Don't Taze Me Bro". I look forward to seeing it on YouTube.
- BF, Ashland

The police showed remarkable restraint and took the high road, despite the fact of being mocked by the pride of the city. The participants say they will be back each day at 4:20. Don't doubt it-where else do they have to go? I do suggest to the city that they need to address this issue quickly-otherwise your town will be branded with the issue. Consider that when you try to get families down to your pumpkin festival. Local merchants, is this what you want for you city?
- Carl, Concord

As soon as the first snowflake falls, these people will retreat back to their parents basements in a flash to resume their video game careers.

Awfully angry for peaceful potheads don't you think??? Must be the local made in NH pot!

"Hopefully us 420 smokers will be more welcoming to them next time". Quote of the day right there!
- John, Dover

It only takes a few errant individuals for ones expression to be lost. Good for those protesters that that took the high road and shame on those that were there for the wrong reasons. I'm glad to see the police did their jobs, set aside their emotions and were prepared to act only if called upon.

Marijuana is a plant. Something grown naturally by the maker of your choice. How silly it is that we waste dollars and resources by making it illegal.
- John, Dover

What a bunch of losers! Keene is not longer a place to raise a family. The police, local goverment and State goverment do nothing while these fool break the law and promote drug use.
- Tony, Keene

It's a nice place for them to get together, compare welfare and unemployment checks see if thier getting what they"deserve". I would say, pay them no mind, let them smoke until thier brains or lungs rot, LOL
- jack, Concord

Peeps, "420" is used in the "smoker's" world as a reference to Hitler's birthday.
- AW, Concord, NH

Kudos to all of those who supported this mighty cause. There will be a day when we look back upon these dark times and laugh, but for now, we must put up with these idiotic laws.
Good job also to the police involved (or not involved I should say).
Let's just hope their bosses don't decide to arrest everyone next time.
Keep up the good work 4:20r's!
- tom, manchester

When advocating for the use of a recreational drug becomes the primary focus of your life....YOU HAVE A PROBLEM. Here's an idea: Put down the bong, pick up a book, do a little studying and develop a healthier way of spending your free time, morons.
- Mark, Bedford

Losers. Grow up already. Get jobs and waste your money on better things. haa haa like bills, food, clothes. seriously, tho. grow up already. Think about the long term health risks you are putting into your body.

oh yeah ps. Why get so mad at the cops? They are doing their jobs and upholding current laws. They are not harassing or abusing you. Like I said GROW UP.
- Amy, Goffstown

""All we want is to be able to smoke pot, that's all."""

The future looks bright with such lofty goals. What a bunch of losers.
- Tim, Canaan

If the breakdown of law is going to happen anywhere, if would be in Keene. Keene is filled with Liberals who tolerate law breakers.
- Fred, Keene, NH

Hint to someone in Keene. Open a hot dog stand at the park.
- sk `, ft laud, fl

My question is what if other citizens, who are not smokers, wanted to use the park at that time. The pot smoke in the air would have made that not very pleasant for them. Granted it was only for a short period of time. And why is the UL quoting a 16 year old? What does a 16 year old know about life?

And for those of you that are speculating about what the cops "would have done," why not just compliment what actually did happen instead of just looking for a way to trash talk them. They could have very easily arrested any of you protestors.
- Brad, Bedford

The downfall of humanity right here folks.

There are far more important things to worry about than your "right" to use an illegal drug.
- Chris, Laconia

Clearly, these potheads can be described as a bunch of fools. The Union Leader shouldn't even be covering this nonsense.
- Brian, Farmington

looks like the rich kids are acting up, put the fire hoses to them, they will move on. you cant be drunk in public so how about stoned in public.
- jp, hooksett

I am going to ignore such things as any leaf burning restrictions this fall, along with a whole lot of other local laws. If caught, I will use this as a precedent, that the police are choosing to selectively enforce the law instead of applying it as demanded BY law.

Can we get the State's Attorney to look into this, or perhaps cut off their funding until they do their jobs and arrest people for having illegal narcotics?

If they don't have to obey the law, why should I obey any laws? I don't think I will.
- Frank Chauchen, Keene

"And I would never treat them how they are treating us today. I wouldn't talk to them the way they are talking to us."

Maybe you wouldn't but there are a lot of cops who would. There are stories every day about terrible, corrupt behavior from police officers. And initiating force on peaceful people for non-violent drug offenses is far worse than a few rude words.

Nevertheless, thanks to all the police officers for not initiating violence on these peaceful people yet. I wish this kind of discretion would be used more often. All these people are asking for is to be left alone. The law does not determine what is right or moral. Crimes must have victims.
- Mitch, Nevada

Thanks UL for keeping us Keene residents up on what's going on, the local newspaper is ignoring all of this while continuing their pro-Obama blitz.

Also, I wonder if the police would have arrested a peaceful protester with an open container of beer. Maybe they wouldn't have because they couldn't smell the beer.
- David, Keene

A few misquotes aside, i like this article. I'm glad the 420 smoke is going over so peacefully. The police could have made it a big issue and they chose not to, that was big of them. The whole time they were mocked and they still chose to let us go about our business. I applaud them all and i am sorry for the hostility that was projected. they didn't deserve it, and hopefully us 420 smokers as a whole will be more welcoming to them next time, after all it seemed to me almost as if Peloquin, despite the hostility towards him because of what he represents, was there is support of us.

Remember all are welcome, and your support is appreciated even if you don't smoke. 4:20 at the town center.

Noah Wood
- Noah Wood, keene

Legalizing Marijuana......... thats what America needs, more dumbing down of its citizens.
- Gus, Manchester

As a participant for the past 4 days, I disapprove of the actions of a few at the gathering today. There was no need for yelling at the cops or drivers. At the same time, I don't blame them for being angry at these cops, who if we hadn't been so many and organized, would have probably used violence on us. Look at Andrew Carroll, he simply held up a bud of cannabis and was kidnapped by the police and thrown in a cage.
- Evan, Keene, NH

"The number 420 is a code used by police officers to indicate the presence of marijuana."
This is not true. The most accepted origin of the term 420 is that it was used by a group of students at San Rafael High School in California to represent the time they would meet in a local park to smoke.

*** Editor's note: The origin of "420" is unclear. The statement that it was police code has been removed from the story. ***
- Scott, Bedford

4:20 on a thursday. . .I guess these "protesters don't have jobs.
- EriK, Manchester

Wow, Rich Paul is really hardcore...he will smoke up to protest...unless he thinks the cops will be around, since he doesn't want to get arrested.

Most people who are gainfully employed and are productive members of society are at work at 4:20 in the afternoon. Guess that's why these people can smoke up on public land at that time.
- Greg, Manchester
