By GARRY RAYNO
New Hampshire Union Leader Staff
Friday, May. 22, 2009
Republican officials said Thursday morning the Governor should veto the same-sex marriage bill so legislators can move on to deal with the state budget that is half-billion dollars out of balance.

Minority rights should not be decided by mob rule. The reason the legislature is the proper body to decide this question is to protect the minority rights of gay and lesbian people who wish to marry. Civil Unions vs Gay marriage make the relationship "separate but equal" and we all know that separate is NEVER equal.
I hope that our Legislators and Senators do the right thing and successfully negotiate a bill for gay marriage that the governor will sign into law.

...You could say the same thing about two brothers wanting to marry each other. Why not? What would it hurt? They wouldn't be hurting anyone. The truth is that the same rules that forbid siblings to marry each other are that same rules that forbid two men or two women from marrying each other. If you say yes to one you say yes to the other. Society has the right to declare and enforce its NORMS. Get over it Mary. Enjoy your life with whoever you choose in a civil union, and allow us to keep America intact. This country is the only thing standing between barbarism and civility. Remember this Mary..If we lose this country..you lose your protection to express your sexuality. This is the only place where you can outwardly express who you really are. Protect America and you protect yourselves.

Suddenly, what I am really afraid of, is people like YOU who could be so ignorant and hateful to say that, religious people do not have the right freedom of speech, to say what on their minds and hearts, here in America. Our speech and our votes have EVERYTHING to do with our beliefs, religious or otherwise.
Regarding your other point that ‘marriage is not about what the Bible says’; It is a little offensive to me that you fail to clarify; American Civil Marriage has nothing to do with any religious texts, but Christian Religious Marriage has everything to do with the Bible. Right? But that doesn’t mean that American Civil Marriage laws can’t or shouldn’t reflect the moral sensibilities (whatever they are based on) of a super-majority of the population. If there is not a clear super-majority then a compromise solution (like Civil Unions) should reflect the moral sensibilities of both sides of the issue. Duh?
I forgive you. Hopefully you will be more careful with your words in the future.
- Jim, Manchester
You have to understand the difference between religious and civil marriage (between life and law). The former is your church/temple/synagogue ceremony, that says you are recognized by those in attendance as a couple, and your vow before God to life your life according to His guidance for husbands and wives. The later is a certificate from Town Hall that says the couple is recognized by the State and is eligible for certain legal rights and responsibilities.
I agree with what Eric in Manchester below says, but I’d even take in one step further. I don’t care if churches call their RELIGIOUS commitment ceremonies for homosexuals ‘weddings’ or ‘marriage’ (like the Episcopals have been doing for 20 years). I just won’t attend it. And I will not recognize an immoral relationship even if the State passes a law that makes that CIVIL relationship legal. My duty is to God first.
It IS NOT hatred or anger to oppose this gay CIVIL marriage law. It is self defense against a moral onslaught. It IS hatred and anger to try to force religious viewpoints out of civil society.

“If the legislature passes this language, I will sign the same-sex marriage bill into law. If the legislature doesn’t pass these provisions, I will veto it."
The legislature didn't pass the language.
Anything a conference committee comes up with will be less than the full amendment the Senate passed (which was what the governor set as his minimum requirements.)
He has no choice but to veto this if he is to hold true to his word.
- Margaret Drye, Plainfield
Right on! Somehow I feel that there will be less people interested in your proposal. A couple of things your posting forgot to mention. It's the "benefits" that come along with running.
Countless hate mail and e-mails, phone calls (at all hours), being targeted on opposition websites, and lots and lots of meetings, hearings, etc.
Oh yea, don't forget to tell them it's still $100 per year for compensation....
I know first hand- there's a State Rep. in my family.
All of these "benefits" will quickly reduce the candidate pool

I want this vetoed and I want Lynch and others to pay attention to much more important issues.
I would applaud Lynch if he threw the whole thing out and said it would be on our next state-wide ballot and that the people should decide for once and for all in our state. Does he have power to do that? I hope so. These idiot who are in office need to know who is boss, we are the voters. We should be deciding not them.
- L Hemy, Plaistow
Did they even follow the 2008 election? John McCain "suspending" his campaign to focus on the economy, contrasted with Obama saying he could do both at the same time was the turning point in the election. McCain was grandstanding and the voters saw right through it. The only reason why Republicans are making this argument is because they have no legit reason to oppose marriage equality, and they know that the religious arguments aren't effective in NH like they are in the south/midwest.
If they really wanted to "put this issue behind us" they'd either vote for it or not stand in the way. To claim that the only way to move onto the budget is to veto the marriage bill is laughable.
- Dan, Manchester
This has been said by others before, and obviously it didn't get through to you, so I don't have a lot of hope it will be heard this time.
But anyway:
No one is saying people can't live however they choose, with whoever they choose.
No one is trying to 'decide for them'.
No one is saying they can't be happy.
No one is even saying (that I've seen, anyway) that the civil union law should be repealed.
All we're saying is, don't call it marriage, because it isn't.
Perhaps the best thing that could happen here, though the chances are vanishingly small, would be for the government to get out of the business of defining what marriage is. It really does not/should not have that power. 'Civil marriage' is NOT something that didn't exist until some bright bulb in the government thought of it - it's merely a codification of common law marriage (which, for hundreds of years at least, was--you guessed it--between one man and one woman).
- Eric, Manchester
Could I give you some good advice? I'd give some much more serious thought about what you "teach" your children. Remember, they will see references to "our" society - whether it be in person, in the media etc. What will you say then? What will you tell them when they ask about gay or lesbians? My God, could it be true that two people do love each other - that is, other than in your "framed world" which you are trying to live? I only caution you that as a parent myself, THEY will see the difference and as years go by, they'll be doing business transactions etc. with "us." And then, it is you that will be exposed to yes, your own children, as someone who misled them all along. There are very few areas of today's business world where the gay or lesbian sector is not involved in some ways. Yes, businessmen and women, doctors, lawyers, politicians and the list goes on and on.....take my advice John, don't make the same mistakes I made years ago. You will feel as bad as I do.
- Mike, Manchester
Lastly, who the heck is Jeb Bradley siding on this isusue claiming that we ought to be dealing with the budget issue? Isn't he (at the very least!) partially responsible for the mess we are in? A word of advice Jeb, you, like the Diocese of Manchester, should stay out of this debate - your credibility is zero.
- JJ, Manchester, nh
I am tired of this debate over the right to marry. If two consenting adults want to get married, then let them. Other than that no one should have more rights over another, we should all get equal rights. If this group wants more rights than that should not be allowed. Equal rights is far different from special rights.
- k, hillsboro
- Susan Shapiro, Nashua
You are absolutely right; however, none of the issues are relevant.
gay marriage, not relevant!
cell phone texting, not relevant!
seat belt "law," not relevant!
the economy... haven't heard much about that now have you? well, besides bailing out billionaires and giving tax payer money to fix the governor's mansion in TX! yeah, THAT'S helpful!
- scott, chichester
- ed, londonderry
The issue of legal protections for non traditional couples was addressed and solved when the bill re Civil Unions was passed.
Anyone that attempts to compare the Gay Marriage issue to Slavery is ignorant at best and really should look at the definition of Slavery and what it entailed throughout human history.
Veto the bill Gov Lynch
- Paul, Bradford
Come on People...While I don't appreciate the governor's strategy, maybe it helps him sleep at night, let's compromise and get this done-and move on to other issues....Civil Rights will never go away until the right outcome is achieved....We people who insist on civil rights and equal protection before the law are serious and dedicated.
And to the Union Leader, someday, I hope you will see the error of your bigoted ways! I had hope when the Loebs passed away, but I was wrong...so far and there is always hope...that or your paper will be bought up by some giant conglomerate-

If you are truly grateful for your Life than WHY does it HURT SO MUCH, to let other people enjoy the time they have on this earth with whom ever they choose HOW EVER THEY CHOOSE TO LIVE IT? Its NOT OUR BUSINESS to DECIDE FOR THEM. They are NOT IN OUR HOME telling us how to live our lives, WHY IS IT OK TO BE IN THEIRS? Its NOT. we have to be grateful for what we have, and part of being grateful is is forgiving. If you are truly hurt by some ones decision to be with the one they love, then what does that say about your Love...? "I am not happy so why should he be? or why should she be?"` Grow up
- michelle, pembroke
In a short few days the California State Supreme Court is going to uphold our right to amend our state constitution to define marriage as being only between one man and one woman. I hope that gives the people of other states the courage to let their voices be heard. Given the chance, the people of Vermont and Connecticut and probably even Massachusetts will do the same. I am of the opinion that they will do this as soon as they possibly can - by electing state representatives who actually listen to the people instead of trying to force their own partisan political agenda on them.
I expect that Governor Lynch will veto this bill. I think he actually would like to be re-elected for yet another term, that is if he hasn't already blown it. He could rehabilitate his image by vetoing the bill. I hope he does. That would be the right thing for him to do. And I wish the House and Senate would have enough common sense and common decency to allow the people to vote on this issue rather than trying to force it on them against their will.

Also from reading the comments posted here I can only imagine what's happenning in the state house between the two parties. As for the supposed definition of marriage just remember fifty years ago the government still allowed states to BAN interracial marriages on religious grounds too we got passed it and the country didn't go into annarchy. We can survive this as well.

Put it to public vote.
You won't, because you know it'd lose. Backlash is coming next year.
- Mike R., Bedford
- Bill, Manchester
It's the gays that have a problem with the word "marriage". Correct me if I'm wrong, but weren't they already allowed Civil Unions? That offered them the protections they desire. A bigger question to me: have gays ever heard the words "power of attorney", or "living will"? That would offer them all the protection they need when it comes to heirs of estates, etc...
Veto. Let the voters decide.

Perhaps it should be made clear to you that no where in the US Constitution is the issue/idea of separation of church and state.
There is, however, the no establishment clause, which prohibits a state religion. They are not, however, the same.

Maybe if you could SPELL dinosaurs, we might listen to you. Fiscal conservatism and national sovereignty is never the 'way of the dinosaurs' unless of course you are a global Marxist like Obama. And Lynch isn't helping with this huge deficit and cap and trade SCAM he's pushing on us.
Bob -- Lynch and smaller government? Wow your capacity to delude yourself is breathtaking. He just caused a $500 M deficit we've never had before because he raised the spending by 28% in two years. And it's the Dems passing hate crimes, food legislation and all sorts of other taxes and controls... get real!
Cathy - it is not backward to oppose affirmative action and that's all this is, using sexual preference to extort money out of other people.

Let's move on to more IMPORTANT ISSUES
I swear I can't wait till next election, I've got every time wasting, useless Politician on my radar.
I don't what party your in, your done in my world. Stop wasting TAXPAYER time and do something!!!!!!
- Harry, Atkinson
Independent's just are not falling for it any more. Both Republicans and Democrats understood when Obama took over that the Republicans had botched things so bad during the Bush administration that we needed government stimulus.
Independents believe that stimulus should be short run. And the Democrats should beware about that. But for Republicans to pretend that they are not for big government, and more regulations, nothing makes that clearer than using government to choose who can marry who.
That's about as big government as you can get.
As a former Benson supporter I watched big government Republicans eat him alive, the same ones who comment in this article.
And now it's conservative Governor John Lynch who wants to keep government small enough that it will not choose anyone's marriage partner.
And the 17.5 percent increase that Republicans use to pretend that Lynch is spending wildly is a lie. It counts non-discretionary spending, much of it authorized by Republican controlled legislatures and Republican governors.
Republicans are big government trolls. They pretend to be for small government while they ram more and more and more government down our throats.
For Independent's it's once bitten, twice shy.
Republicans should show they are for smaller government. They should join conservative, small government advocate, Governor John Lynch in standing up to government when it gets soooo Republicanly big that it will choose anyone's mate.
- Bob Jean, Northwood, NH
Also, in order to take seriously all these people harping about 'the sancity of marriage' um why are they not as gun-ho about divorce? that is a far greater threat to kids and the instution than gays can every be! !!
Pull the plank out of your own eye before you look to others!!!!!

I honestly do not care if you pass it or veto--please just make a decision! Oh, and do not take a gutless approach of doing nothing (letting it pass w/o your signature). Then, get on with your most important job; OUR budget(every one of your constituants vs. select groups is affected).
- Brian, Manchester (currently Iraq)
Quick correction. Marriage is a union between a white man and a white woman. Or... a black man and a black woman if we choose to allow the black to marry.......
Do you see our point...at all?
- Kyle, Manchester
The Democratically controlled house is willing to pander to anyone on any issue that will get them more votes. Never has this issue been more obvious than now.
It was easy to look up on the State of NH website how our State Reps voted, and how it passed the house.
It most likely because of some Reps not wanting the voters to know they were agains it just didn't vote. What great representation.
And not to let Governor Lynch off the hook, the people of NH have seen how he he changes his tune to be politically correct. I'm sure he's gaining fewer votes that he's losing.
Lastly IT IS time the legeslature spent time on the budget....and to fix it, not just play with it.
For too many years the House had had a a tax and spen attitude....the problem has been you spend more than you take in. You can bet that in this economy...WE ARE WATCHING NOW MORE THAN EVER.
For those that keep touting the constitution, and trying to tweek it to you own tune.....Get a life.

- Marc, Weare
There is only one problem Marc. The republican party no longer believes in the ideals it was founded on. They may not create bigger government but they won't shrink it either. They may not raise taxes but then the democrats did that for them and they certainly won't get rid of taxes. Even those that are so pothetic it taxes you for dying or having the gaul to create a business and employ people.
Sorry but I've lost my faith but not my conservative values.

"Big government" is using political power to redefine an institution that has served the culture for hundreds of years. Even Machiavelli knew better than that; he advised princes who had just conquered another land to avoid changing their old laws and customs.
This is not a matter of remedying discrimination. What this bill does is like saying that not only must one-armed people not be discriminated against, everyone must also believe that they have two arms (or at least never breathe a word to the contrary).
But what does that matter to a government that has abolished natural law? As O'Brien says in Orwell's 1984, "If the Party wished it, I could float off the floor like a soap bubble."

You must be new here, so welcome to the united states.
If you believe that it's the republicans who want bigger government control, ask tipper gore about explicit lyrics. I guess you haven't heard about the strict gun control laws that the democrats want passed. What about "violent" video games that the democrats seem to have a problem with, too.
Get an education about the demon party before you spew your ignorance.
- scott, chichester
If what you said was true, I'd be a Democrat. It couldn't be more wrong, so I'm a Republican. I don't agree with the Republican leadership all of the time - especially the national leadership - but here in NH the difference is crystal clear.

Our Founders went to great lengths to limit Democratic institutions as they have universally and inevitably lead to Oligarchies and Tyranny.
There is not a single Federal or State Constitution that makes any reference to Democracy but a great many make reference to the small "r" republican form of government.
Democracy is after all by definition the rule by 50% +1 or in other words "Mob Rule".

Calling the relationship between two homosexuals a marriage does not necessarily make it so. Everyone knows what marriage is or is not. This is just like the hijacking of the word gay to mean homosexual. The state can call it whatever they want as far as I am concerned. It has no effect on me or my family or my religious convictions. I know what a real marriage is and is not and I will teach this to my children.
- John, Nashua
- Mike Smith, Hampton, NH

- Scott, White Horse Beach, MA
And lets not forget, when Craig Benson wanted smaller government, and vetoed the bloated Republican Legislature's budget to try and get a smaller one, it was the big government Republicans quoted in this article that fought him every step of the way. They were thirsty then for more and bigger government, and they are thirsty now for more and more government.
Republicans are not fooling anyone. They love government, and more and more and more regulations.
They are soooo liberal, they endorse using bigger government for social engineering and picking people's mates.
Governor Lynch is the true conservative in Concord. He wants smaller government, and even though he disagrees with same sex marriage, he is not willing to use big government to oppose freedom.
- Bob Jean, Northwood, NH
This debate is ridiculous anyways it is not the Governments role to dictate who can get married in a particular church or not, or who can marry who at all. If the majority wants it or doesnt want it that i what democracy is all about is it not?
Besides a church that does not want to marry people is not required to do so.
