Roads to nowhere: Stimulus dollar magic

Errors in compiling federal stimulus figures continue. The latest example: A new report on stimulus-funded projects invented dozens of new congressional districts across the country.

Last week Recovery.gov, the official stimulus Web site, showed that Kansas has 14 congressional districts. That's more than Virginia, which has nearly four times Kansas' population. In reality, Kansas has only four districts. The site listed projects in Pennsylvania's 65th and 96th districts. No state has more districts than California's 53.

The Josiah Bartlett Center's Grant Bosse first reported on Monday that Recovery.gov showed six congressional districts in New Hampshire. We have two. Bosse on Friday announced his intention to run for Congress in the non-existent "00th District," which was listed on Recovery.gov.

The Obama administration blames the foul-ups on clerical errors by stimulus fund recipients. Maybe, but that doesn't explain why, for example, a $49,900 project listed for Kansas' phantom 36th congressional district could not be found anywhere in the state, according to the Witchita Eagle.

If this were the first and only stimulus-related error, it might not be cause for alarm. But this follows other even worse howlers.

In June, President Obama claimed that the stimulus bill had "created or saved" 150,000 jobs. It wasn't true. A CBS News reporter noted, "The President's top economic adviser readily agrees those 150,000 jobs come from an estimate. So why does the President present the figures as fact?"

Earlier this month, the Associated Press "found that more than two-thirds of 14,506 jobs credited to the recovery act under spending by just one federal office were overstated because they counted pay increases for existing workers as jobs saved."

The AP reported that the administration told local recipients to count the raises as jobs saved.

We have an administration that has been caught red-handed misleading the people about the number of jobs saved. Its own Web site is slower and less accurate than a privately run alternative site set up to track stimulus dollars.

And the people administering the program don't even know that there's no such thing as an 00th congressional district.

As Sen. Judd Gregg said last week, these people can't even keep count of their own spending projects; why in the world would we trust them to run health care?

YOUR COMMENTS

Heard those extra NH congressional districts belong to ACORN in 2010...
- Mae, Plaistow

Those fiscally responsible Republicanics at it again. Some 30 out of 140,000 projects have been found to have been entered in error. Those errors are being fixed. When did we ever have a Republicanic that could count waste except when it has been laundered through their pockets? This is the same kind of crap as about voter fraud and union intimidation. Since the thirties there have been 34 cases of union member intimidating other workers to force them to join unions. In 2008 alone there were 34,000 workers fired for suspected union organizing activity. And then the joke about voter fraud and tort reform this last is less than 1/2 of one percent of the money spend on health care.

Well Tex ole boy you didn't answer with any substance, not that I was expecting any. Hey Tex please answer these questions:
* Who owns most of our debt?
* Who is quickly buying up US real estate faster than Japan?
* who can sink us but selling all the bonds they hold?

If you think we are leaders in technology you are a fool. Please tell me Sony, Nikkon, NEC, Samsung etc are behind us in technology and you say you work for a technology company? our dollar is weak and it is a pure buy vs.make decision based upon price my comrade!
- Paul, Candia

Typing a little too fast in my last post. What read "...rather than purchase a few well constructed, durable products made overseas." should have read "... rather than purchase a few well constructed, durable produce made in the US." I'll proof read better next time.
- Texter, Newfields

Paul, Candia,
The company I work for sells high tech devices which cost in the several thousands of dollars each. When the value of the dollar is high in relation to other currencies, especially the Euro, foreign manufacturers will purchase OEM hardware from manufacturers located in the Euro zone vs the US. When the dollar is weak, they seek out US manufacturers, whether it be the company I work for or others located stateside who make similar products. Since many of the consumers of the devices we make are located or based overseas with US production plants, our products are more attractive to them when the dollar is weak. Like any other industry, we have had layoffs, but I've been just as busy quoting product for when demand returns, and for new products for five or ten years down the line. If things were as gloomy as some say, that activity would have dried up.

I can't answer all of your comments, but I can tell you that China will continue to laugh at the US as the balance of power has shifted, and will continue, in part due to the fact that so many Americans are more than willing to sell their country down the tube in order to buy cheap baubles at the likes of WalMart, the Christmas Tree Shops, etc. rather than purchase a few well constructed, durable products made overseas. Read any high tech related publication and see the announcements being made of US companies entering into joint ventures with Chinese companies who are government entities, and tell me that in ten or twenty years the Chinese won't be beating us at our own game with technology they were given by us, or stole from us. How does that grab you?
- Texter, Newfields

Um, Russ, where are you getting your facts from? Must be the same place that Obama is getting his "facts".

The Stimulus Bill was touted as being absolutely necessary to turn around the recession. Many in your little world things are all rosy but for most of the country we are still in a major financial crisis.

As far as Republicans crying what about me-me-me: it's great that a handful of single mothers are still employed but it is hard to be too excited when your colleagues are being let go on a weekly basis and you can only hope that you are not next. Sorry, but when it comes to feeding my children, it is all about them.
- Karen, Auburn

All you people should stop your complaining. Not one person has had to pay one dollar in Fed. tax. sence Obama has come into office not one. In fact my pay check has has went up. GM is now in the process of paying back the money with intrest. This is just a normal old out-dated Republican call. That is all they have had to stand on for 40 years.
If you don't think the stimulus money has not helped save some jobs maybe you should ask some of the single mothers that are still working because of the money. But as usual with the Republicans ( what about me-me-me-I-I-) It has always been that way and will always be that way. Never forget the Iraq was. $1,000,000,000,000 and counting. I think only the Republicans should have to pay for it.

Didn't the Obamaites especially the czars put on the congressional reprimand block and caused CEO and key workers heads to roll when the auto makers, bankers, financial industry, and mortgage industry made "mistakes" that caused our economic woes? Why aren't some czars and "clerks" as well as our CEO facing the same fate that they imposed on those who were similarly incompetent? Oh, I forgot it is because they can't be impeached until there is balance back in the branches of government, and they are doing their best to ensure that can't happen; because they will have turned us into a socialized country and there will be no republic to protect. :( This is not about Republications, Democrates, etc. it is about soicalism, communisum, and marxism change being brought into our Nation--Obama has put the word out that he and his are going to change the world and redistrubte the wealth of our coutnry and equalize wealth globablly. Check out his appointments--who he did not get approved by the Senate as required--nor did he respond to a request to do so by (D) Senator Bryd. If we had a balanced representation at least in congress then there might be some checks and balances possible. Regardless people write your "repsenstatives" with your concerns and objections.
- Janet, Londonderry, NH

Hey Texter, nice alias by the way!

Let me lay something out there for your consideration:

* a weaker dollar means inflation.
*inflation means higher interest rates.
*higher interest rates means less income to spend.
* your emperor's healthcare bill means more taxes, less services ( notice the mammogram and pap sprear restrictions form gov't panels lately?) and less discretionary income.
* China laughed at us when your emperor was there.
* Japan called his bow insulting.
* the majority of the stimulus is for manual labor on highways and oh lets not forget Peolosi marsh mice or Muthay's airport runway!.
* where are these jobs once the snow flies?

So Texter, nice nickname btw, please tell me what products your company sells and at what price and how many people have been let go so I can apply!
- Paul, Candia

Dear Congress - please end the session and go home, you've done enough damage the past 4 months.

When you folks come back in January, don't do anything - please!!

We're going broke with all the waste on spending!!
- Harry, Atkinson

thank you liberal spenders. The TARP (from the Bush era), Stimulus from obama and the generally foolish spending of congress over the last several years is going to create one thing without fail, inflation. Not jobs, inflation, which is really a way of saying your hard earned money is going to significantly decrease in value. Not a single country in history has practiced such fiscal stupidity and had their economy survive. The stimulus was just a way for the democrat party to spent lavishly on their campaign contributors and blame it all on bush.
- Michael Layon, Derry

It is good to see the UL going over the stimulus funds with a fine-tooth comb as they are being spent by a Democrat-run government. Too bad they didn't go over the money spent in Pakistan or Iraq or Afghanistan with a fine-tooth comb as they were spent by a Republican-run government. Hmmm. I wonder why they didn't then?
- Steve B, Derry

I guess it is true if you repeat lies long enough they become true. How many people do you think who read the information on the administrations website have the ability or will take the time to verify what is posted?

Remember the same population whose responsibility it is to verify this information before they believe it, is the same population who failed to ask what hope and change actually meant. I can still hear Obama claiming he is not a socialist during the election as the population ignored his associations with known socialist groups and more importantly failed the simple task of looking at his short lived voting record in the senate. Another clue is when an elected official fails to vote because doing so might give him or her away. Considering they do get elected to make a choice a no vote is the perfect form of deception for any future plans they may have.

Then we can add in all the votes groups like ACORN throw into an election by people who can’t seem to find a way to get to a polling station because something else other than who runs the country for four years is more important. How many of them do you think know anything about those running for office? And this falls in with our nation’s willingness to throw personal responsibility out the window in favor of entitlement.
- Deb, Derry

Back in 2006 the UL put out an article on a Sunday edition with a quote by a woman in Amherst who said she was embarrassed to be a Republican.
After seeing the effects of spending $787 billion dollars and unemployment going above 10% and the latest recovery.gov fiasco, is anybody out there embarrassed to be a Democrat?
- Chris, Merrimack

I can understand clerical errors happening in a task of this magnitude. But to invent new Congressional districts in most states - come on - even the most junior computer programmer knows how to deal with that one. But to have the effrontery to count pay raises (Yes, some states used stimulus money to grant pay raises to existing employees) as a "job saved" is not only dead wrong, it should be more aptly labelled as fraudulent use of (MY) Government money.
- Sandy, Thornton

A report on TV said they paid $18 millon for the on-line software to have people inter the data into the system.

As a software developer I can tell you for that kind of money it should have edits to verify the inputed data is valid.
- Frank, Lee

You cannot and should not believe anything Obama says. The guy is a liar. He says whatever is expedient at the time in advancing his cause. Obama is 100 percent for Obama. If you believe for one second that he has the interests of this country or its citizens at heart, then you were one of those naive voters who got suckered in with his smoke and mirrors campaign show.
- Brian, Farmington

What a politician that did not come through on their promises. This is the same complaints heard after every election - state or federal. It gives the losing side something to complain about until the next election. It has always been this way and always will - it's called politics. Elect me and I will then do what I want to advance myself - it's a job.

I am no fan of all this $$ being spent, when the road is paved the jobs will stop. If these "leaders" would buy a $0.59 pen, repeal NAFTA and set some tariffs they could actually create real jobs. This country built the rest of the world up, now it is time to rebuild this country.
- Jim, Loudon

Perhaps the Democrats so called “economic stimulus legislation” came with a hidden asterisk (*) defining what they consider the definition of the word “jobs” is?

“Jobs” = we’ll just make it up as we go along. Then again we don’t actually read the legislation before passing it in the first place.

Of course “economic stimulus” is just the latest politically correct misnomer for the regurgitation of the Progressive-Leftist blueprint of TAX, SPEND, REDISTRUBUTION & DEBT. And as history has shown, it has little to with actual economic growth, and everything to do with an out-of-control power hungry big government take over of the free market system.
- Mac Wade, Newmarket

Hey, a weak US dollar makes the products my company manufactures here in NH more attractive to foreign buyers, so don't go knocking it too hard. How about making the Chinese revalue their dollar, or better yet, stop going to WalMart and buying items made in China?
- Texter, Newfields

I believe Judd Gregg voted for the stimulus so he should shut up about health care. He has no credibility.

I bet these "errors", a lot of them anyway, will turn about to be money that was outright stolen. The phantom districts probably make it impossible to trace.
- Kevin, Rindge

I realize the Obots will whine about the mean UL op-ed again, but lets face it, either the administration is inept in its reporting out what has been done, or it is lying, I suspect a combination of both. This was the second report that had these types or errors. After report #`1 came out you would think that the things would have been cleaned up. I also suspect the general lack of respect the democratic party generally shows towards middle america and the intelligence of average Americas come into play here.
- jeff, goffstown

How do I declare myself a Congressional District so I can get some of this money?
- Dave, Ashland

Honestly you could could write an editorial a week on the inpetness of the Obama's administration. If the UL wants a real challenge writing editorials, see if you can find a subject that has been sucessful, accountable or transparent over the course of the past eleven months. The devalue of the american dollar, increasing the national debt to over 12 trillion and beer summits cannot count.
- Sydney, Londonderry

Like most Democrats, they make statments of claimed fact and then you have to prove that they lied. The lie gets the headline and the truth is buried. Epping has 2 so called shovel ready projects and we haven't spent a penny yet (state approvals holding it up). How many jobs are we going to save 100? I can hardly wait for "10" and "12". Get the conservatives back in charge. W/the increased unemployment and not a good prospect for jobs who will pick up the tab for all these entitlements? Wait a minute I got it this is all Bushs fault. Forever, thats what the Dems say. Oh ya, I forgot to mention the likely doule digit inflatioin because of all the government spending. Now that is definately Bushes fault, ask a Democrat.
- Michael King, Epping

The last sentence says it all: "why in the world would we trust them to run health care?"

"Figures don't lie, but liar's figure." Not to mention, Obama calls all of this a "side issue." I call it all more accurately, a pack of lies in an attempt to outright deceive Americans.

I wonder how long were going to let this pack of liars stay in office?
- judy, bradford

People make clerical errors all the time. (I can't even find "Witchita" on my map!) What is happening here is a feverish attempt to show results of the "stimulus program." Of course, when you print up new dollars and fritter them around, new economic activity happens. That is not the same as prosperity. The jobs we could have created if the productive sector had had that money--the jobs that won't be created next year as the Fed tries to fight the inflation caused by "stimulus"--can't be counted or listed. But jobs created at gunpoint is a zero-sum game--there must be a loser for every winner.
