Rude Rudy: Does he think we're all rubes?

Reader comments

If Rudy Giuliani really was just taking a cellphone call from his wife during a speech the other day, he is incredibly rude.

If the incident was staged to show what a good hubby he is, he was not only rude but he must think his audience, the National Rifle Association's convention, is a bunch of rubes.

We haven't found anyone who thinks Rudy accidentally left his cellphone on, then decided to answer it in mid-speech because he's such a swell husband. Here is a candidate who is weak on family issues. Interrupting a speech to take a call from the Mrs. might be just the sort of thing an advisor would recommend to appeal to the family-values crowd. (An out-of-touch advisor, that is.)

The former New York City mayor is touchy about his family. He is quick to dismiss questions about his family's turmoil with a "mind your own business" attitude, which is how he addressed a Derry woman in August when she asked about his children.

That is fine with us, so long as he is consistent about it. But to then attempt to bolster his devoted-husband image (devoted to wife No. 3) by ostensibly and ostentatiously taking her call and making "love you" small talk while the NRA members cooled their heels, that's too much.

Can we at least have his assurance that, should he get to the Oval Office, we won't find that heads of state have been stopped in mid-sentence while President Rudy takes another call from his spouse? Unless, of course, it's really, really important?

Pro-choice, pro-federal funding of abortion, pro-gay rights, pro-gun control, pro-divorce, Roman Catholic, NYC Italian. Ha ha ha. No chance. The only monogamous one on the GOP ticket is a Mormon. How far the GOP has fallen since the “revolution”.

The only thing worse than the awful crop of Democratic candidates are the Republican ones. I guess I have to go with Brewster and vote “none of the above”.

Ann, The Clintons are one in the same. If he is not cheating on his wife, she is cheating on the country, It is because of woman like yourself that would stay with a man who lies and cheats and I would not consider you a "victim" I would say that it is naive. Woman who stay usually pay with their self esteem.

Well folks, it's none of the above.

Rudy is not a conservative and with this phone stunt, he pulled a 60 Minutes-style 'save my campaign' attempt just like the Clintons did when Bill was caught with Jennifer Flowers.

Would there be much difference with a Rudy or Hillary in office? Please vote for a real Republican who isn't aiding and abetting the NAU, won't you?
- Jane Aitken, Bedford

Jim,
You must work for the campaign because thats some of the worst spin ever. The guy is so out of touch with mainstream America. Republicans need to pick McCain or Romney now and get after it, otherwise, the dire predictions for '08 will come true.

I am torn about Rudy. He is one of about 3 very highly qualified candidates (from either party) but .... Yes, taking a cell call for anything other than an emergency is rude but it seems all to often that this type of rudeness is tolerated. I think he should have either apologized to the NRA meeting or ignored the inbound call. I won't base my vote on this one event but will certainly remember it come election day.

So Robert, you're actually saying people should not vote for Hillary because of the sins of her husband, of which she was a victim? Sounds like you are the one who needs to get his priorities straight. Basing a decision to vote for someone on the spouse of a candidate is idiotic and nonsensical.
- Ann, Durham

Your article missed the entire point. If you knew anything about Rudy and his history with the NRA, you would understand that he was using humor as a vehicle to say he was not there to simply "phone it in"

You should be very careful talking about "swell husbands" Didn't you get the Moveon.org memo about swell husbands? It says that what happens in the private shoud stay private, even if it occurs in the Oval Office with a subordinate or involves lying to a federal judge while under oath.

Maybe Her Highness was referring to your article when she said that one needs to employ "a willing suspension of disbelief"

But is is acceptable to bring back a man into the WhiteHouse who has cheated on the woman who wants to run for president? I think that is MORE rude and disgraceful Get your priorities straight!

Senator Biden made a great observation about Guiliani the other evening during the Democratic debate. He said that Rudy knows less about foreign politics than any of the candidates for President. I am afraid that Biden is correct and in this day and time that makes for a very scary candiate.

One of my favorite candidates, who hasn't received much attention, is Senator Dodd. He is a well rounded individual and one who could actually get something accomplished.
- Mayme Trumble, Madbury

Guiliani is a disrespectful, snide jerk. How he treats voters and his fellow candidates (could anyone miss is snickering and laughing at the answers of his fellow candidates during the debates) is an example of the arrogance he will bring to the White House. And don't even get me started on his "family values." Sorry, Rudy, but letting your second wife know you're leaving her for another woman during a televised press conference takes irreconcilable differences to a new low. This country does not need a bully in chief.
