One of three robbers who burst into a Berlin apartment Wednesday night died from a single gunshot wound to the chest, authorities said yesterday.

According to authorities, Nathaniel Stringfield, 23, of Berlin, was shot after he and two others showed up at the first-floor apartment at 616 Third Ave. Wednesday about 8 p.m. with handguns and assaulted the man and woman who live there.

The male resident retrieved a handgun and then shot two of the three people.

"The best I can tell you is this was a robbery," said Senior Assistant Attorney General Jeffery Strelzin. "It's a home invasion because they went into someone's home and forced their way in."

Authorities yesterday released the identity of a the second man who was shot. Christhian Bodillo, 28, is believed to be a Berlin resident, said homicide prosecutor Jeffery Strelzin, who is overseeing the case. He said Bodillo is in serious condition at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon.

A hospital official last night said no information was available about Bodillo.

Bodillo was found at 827 Western Ave. -- about a third of a mile from the shooting scene -- where he possibly lived.

A third person remains at large, and New Hampshire State Police and Berlin Police are working to identify him and find him, authorities said.

Strelzin would not identify or describe the person. Police have said the person was not armed, and Strelzin said police have no specific information that would lead them to believe that the general public is in danger with the person on the loose.

Strelzin said no one has been arrested. Authorities expect to release the name of the two residents of the Third Avenue apartment in a few days, he said. State police finished searching the apartment late Thursday night.

The couple are free to return, but they have not done so, he said.

Both have been cooperative, he said.
