Spies and lies: Whom do you believe?

Reader comments

United States intelligence officials, including Democrats and Republicans, maintain that Abu Zubaydah, a Guantanamo Bay detainee who has admitted to coordinating a terrorist training camp and fighting for al-Qaida, was a very high-ranking al-Qaida member.

In testimony he gave during questioning at Guantanamo Bay, Zubaydah claims he was not high up in al-Qaida and had nothing to do with planned or carried-out attacks against Americans (though his own diary suggests otherwise). After a transcript of that testimony was declassified, some media outlets reported this week that the CIA had mistakenly identified Zubaydah as a top al-Qaida operative. That is a curious thing to report, considering that the only source for that assertion is Zubaydah himself.

Declassified documents now show that Zubaydah and top al-Qaida man Kalhid Sheikh Mohammad made assertions that contradict CIA assertions. Many on the political left cited these claims as proof that the CIA lied and that harsh interrogation tactics don't work.

The documents, of course, show no such thing. All they reveal is that given contradictory statements between terrorists and the U.S. government, an awful lot of liberals in this country reflexively believe the terrorists.

John II - evidently you need practice reading for content. If you haven't noticed - a given - we are still in two wars. We are still giving money to stock brokers and bankers. Guantanimo is still open. FISA is still not controlling the spying on your phone calls. Geithner is still giving Republicanic stock brokers and bankers - your cronies my tax money. Clinton was a moral slug, so is Edwards, now put them with Cheney, Vittner, Foley, Abramoff, Delay get the point yet? I guess not. That is the way it is with you Republicanic ideologues.
- Robert, Deerfield

Robert (Deerfield),

Where are these Democrats with the standards that they apply to both parties?

You have not uttered a word of criticism towards the current administration.

Instead you continue to spew about the past - ignoring the fact that its all still going on.

Is it because its supported by the guy that doesn't have an (R) by his name?

Nobody believes you buddy... even you don't believe you.
- John II, Manchester

Isn't this fun. We are now seeing the monolithic moronacy of the conservative greed machine. As it turns out, most Democrats have standards that they apply to both the left and the right wing nuts. I don't approve of secrecy whether it is Obama or Butch/Cheney. I don't approve of wars against those who haven't harmed us nor continuing them. I don't approve of giving money, no bid contracts, tax breaks or cronyism not matter who does it. We have just had eight years of the worst corruption in history. I don't want it either to continue or to bring back its major cause which is greedy Republicanic conservatives who just can't get enough. The $750 billion Bush gave to bankers/stock brokers is no beginning to anything I want. Neither are Cheney's lies about why they did it. And I don't want that stuff to continue either.

Easy enough to look up & I think Penny is correct;

"Argumentum ad hominem is the logical fallacy of attempting to undermine a speaker's argument by attacking the speaker instead of addressing the argument. The mere presence of a personal attack does not indicate ad hominem: the attack must be used for the purpose of undermining the argument."

That's exactly what you did, you just laid it on Labrie to defeat his comments. Do facts matter to you? I notice you say you are polite, but does it matter if you are wrong?
- Stephen, Durham

Tom Labrie in Rochester - I feel sorry for you. Perhaps some day, with proper treatment, you just might come to discover what we call "reality".
- Brian, Farmington

Penny, Laconia:
Those who are quick to squeal "ad hominem" and other fancy latin words are usually just throwing these words around in the belief it gives them an edge in an argument. Sorry.
What is sad is that those who engage in throwing out such nasty and liberal "cool" terms such as homophobe, and koolaid, and neocon are not attacking the thrust of the message but merely attacking those who have a belief that doesn't agree with theirs with worthless prose that does nothing but cement their credentials as hanger-oner's who really don't have a clue as to what they are saying.
Keep it up. You will bury yourselves in empty rhetoric.
I don't always agree with UL, but I try to be polite in saying so.
- sandy, thornton

And all the convicts in prison are innocent as well.

P.S. The election had nothing to do with policies and everything to do with the reporting of those policies.

Virtually every policy that Mr. Labrie (Rochester) speaks of continues today... some even expanded... yet - no protests now... no negative press now... no Cindy Sheehan now... No Move On now... no cries of 'civil rights' lost now... no complaints of ignoring the constitution now...

Why? Pure partisan politics.

Say goodbye to your country... You're grandchildren - if they are allowed free thought - will blame you.
- John II, Manchester

Penny, I've not read any posts from you in the past, so I'm assuming you are unfamiliar with Tom Labrie' schtick. Sandy is correct when she asserts that Tom is an angry man. His rants never deviate from the Daily KOS talking points and his hatred of GWB and anyone in his administration is palpable. If you don't agree with Tom, you get labeled a Neo Con or a Republicon.
Tom and his fellow hard left regressives are all about demonizing anyone who disagrees with them. They like to do it in a most condescending manner also.
- Ron, Manchester

"An awful lot of liberals in this country reflexively believe the terrorists."

I see that includes a few liberals in Rochester and Deerfield.
- Rick, Portsmouth

It's also pretty funny that Tom Labrie calls Bush, et al 'Zionist tools'. Based on recent events, Obama looks to be as pro-Israel as any other president.
- Eric, Manchester

War has become so sanitary with all the righteous input by the likes of our liberal "leaders".

The best policy is not to take prisoners.
- Melvin, Keene

Sandy, Thornton -

The paper invites comments, that includes criticism, so suggesting someone not read it if they wants to criticize is completely irresponsible of you, so you are the fool. If one feels the editorial is a big fat sham, one has the obligation to say so, it seems to me. That's citizenship.

On the other hand your criticism is, "ad hominem" as they say; for lack of an argument you just attack the messenger. That's the way of the closed mind.
- Penny, Laconia

Tom Labrie of Rochester: If you are so disgusted with this paper, then why not stop reading it.
Better yet, why not stop writing hate filled, vile commentary that only serves to show the rest of the people in this state what a fool you are.

In some respects, I feel sorry for you, you must be a very angry man.
- sandy, thornton

Silly stab at the air by whoever ghost writes this baloney. Drew Cline? So sign your name!

We all know that Bush and his handlers were AIPAC Zionist tools pushing chits around a map of the Mideast for Israel's benefit. Nice try Neocons, your policies just lost the election for you. Bush probably guarantees Dems in the White House for twenty years!

So please stop with the koolaid drenched analysis out of Cheney Krapphammer Kristol Kagan Joe McQuack Cline & Co. This is America and rather than waste effort negotiating with you and your tired ideas I'll just tell you again: YOU LOST THE ELECTION.

As for trust, it is this paper that can't be trusted.
- Tom Labrie, Rochester

Some declassified docs or detainees' statements don't even begin to paint a picture. Let the politicians grandstand; let the conspiracy theorists rant; but have faith that trusted Americans (troops, analysts and agents) are working hard to keep us safe and that the folks responsible for intelligence oversight are doing their jobs.
- Mike, Hampstead

Whom do I believe? Given the choice between terrorists and the United States, I am much more likely to believe the United States rather than murderers.
- Nicholl, Manchester

You're too funny Robert.

Speaking of liars how is Pelosi doing these days covering up her lie about what she knew and when? Did she resign from office yet?

Remind us again who was president and in control of the CIA when the planning for 9/11 took place?
- Deb, Derry

Robert, you and your ilk talk of the "truth" but it seems that you are deathly afraid of the truth. The CIA lies? So let's investigate them and Pelosi and expose the truth! That is if truth really matters to you of which I have grave doubts!

The author has it exactly right! I remember a few years ago two terrorists released from Gitmo who claimed they were nothing but falsely accused farm boys and it seemed that most liberals were all in an uproar over it. Then three months later these falsely accused "farm boys" were among a group of armed terrorists who surrendered to our troops in Iraq.

Most liberals seem to forget something, it wasn't Bush that put those people in Gitmo it was our troops. Stabbing our troops in the back isn't support! I'm sure that other than the Uighurs, whom were the only ones placed there by Bush, that all of them in Gitmo are terrorists and rightfully there.
- Don Diamant, Milton, NH

The terrorists, now more have incentive to lie and try and extend their cases. They get all the rights of US citizens when it comes to trials. Yup, liberals have already forgotten Spetember 11. Whether or not an individual is guilty should be determined by a military court. Instead those indivuduals will be tried in US courts. We are now giving comfort and aid to the enemy.

if liberals are right, why won't the high and mighty obama release the documents cheney asked for?
- Michael Layon, Derry

Remember the Gulf of Tonkin?
- Texter, Newfields

And other groups (here) believe whatever hogwash our professional liars (the CIA) tell them. Instead of just jettisoning the whole he said, she said thing, or considering who has more to gain - or cover up, hundreds of years of evidence that torture doesn't result in the acquisition of truth is conveniently thrown out. That's journalism these days. That's why it is called "Faux Noise."
- Robert, Deerfield
