Supporters of Congress' proposed government takeover of health care, including Rep. Carol Shea-Porter, have taken to claiming that they are on "the right side of history."

The LaBarre verdict: Jury gets it right
THE JURY in the Sheila LaBarre trial ignored clear and convincing evidence that LaBarre was insane. We applaud them for it.
The state prosecutors in this case also deserve a big hand. They did an excellent job explaining to the jury the difference between mental illness and criminal insanity. There is no question that LaBarre suffers from serious mental illness. And there is no question that she is not criminally insane.
LaBarre's contradictory explanations of how her victims died, her attempts to cover up the crimes, and her history of playing insane to get out of trouble revealed two key facts: she knew she had done wrong, and she was crafty enough to concoct elaborate ruses to evade responsibility.
The jurors deserve credit for keeping their wits about them during this emotionally taxing trial. Staying focused on the facts, they refused to be swayed by LaBarre's sob story or by the defense's attempt to confuse insanity with criminal insanity. Their good judgment has sent an extremely dangerous killer to prison for life. Well done.
They also deserve credit for enduring such an ordeal on our behalf. Years after torturing and murdering two innocent young men, Labarre spent six weeks torturing these 12 innocent jurors. Those poor citizens suffered through one of the most horrific trials in New Hampshire history. They had to listen to recordings of LaBarre's victims being tortured and abused, graphic details of LaBarre's perverted sex life, and haunting tales of sex abuse, sadism and murder.
When it was all over last Friday, the jurors showed that they had not fallen for LaBarre's manipulations. They wisely found her guilty. Again, well done.

Janna - while everyone has a right to an opinion - you obviously didn't watch the trial or hear the evidence. Not only did she admit to killing them, she taped herself threatening the doctor with how she will manipulate the legal system to keep him from kicking her out. How many people in jail for murder are "normal" or "sane".. no normal sane people kill people. However, Sheila knew exactly what she was doing and she tortured these men, who died to excape the pain.
She deserved the death penalty. Unfortunately, neither victim that has been identified - because we all know there are more who will never be identified - were a police officer. Only then could we have the pleasure of ending her life as she so deserves.

Every-one deserve a fair trial, what I would like to see is anyone who appeals, will have to pay all court cost if there appeal is denied. We should not half to keep paying when there found guilty for the second or third time. I'm sure the appeals will dwindle in numbers if there we charged the cost.

To Janna of Manchester; How can you be that unintelligent to feel sympathy for this despicable animal. Pls note she cannot be considered a human being as the difference between animals & man is a soul and conscience. Obviously she has none...I thank God every day that she has been stopped from lengthening her trail of victims. Perhaps, you would feel differently if she were your neighbor & you heard the screams of her victims.

This is getting out of control. LaBarre this LaBarre that..... I am so sick of reading and hearing about the sadistic woman that it sickens me. After tax payers money and endless fees are racked up I hope she is just a bad part of a chapter in life that either rots in jail or gets what she deserves in jail. Maybe she can bunk with Pam Smart!

sorry this woman had no chance her this case was all of the news and papers for the last 2 yrs she is a total nut case and she was clearly insane at the times of the crimes and once she came to she realized what she had done and was like a scared little kid i feel so bad for her and hope her appeal gets her better luck she needs to get help not prison time and if she is not insane then why do they have her at the psychiatric unit in the prison then....

Thank you for your article regarding the jury in the Sheila La Barre trial. Just as Sheila LaBarre sifted through the ash remains at her farm, we carefully sifted through the evidence presented to us and worked very hard before we reached a verdict. One note, there were a total of 18 jurors for most of the trial, 17 at closing arguments, and 16 through the verdict. They were an amazing group of professional, respectful individuals who worked diligently to come to the decision we reached.

Kudos to the state for their fantastic job! And I agree, if a self confessed murderer wants an appeal, then she should pay the costs. Lebarre received her day in court and she had a fair trial. Yes, the law firm did their job, but what new evidence will change the outcome? In the opinion of a lawyer, such as everyone deserves to be fairly represented, everyone also is entitled to their opinion; without inane judgement . What a coup for the firm that beats out the system in NH and wins that elusive "Insanity" judgement!! Think about it!

Boy that BOB AHERN really knows his stuff! Are you a lawyer Bob?

"Let the Denner law firm pay to financial costs to redeem their failed reputation, not the citizen's of NH". What a comment! Regardless of a persons criminal background and how heinous a crime is our constitution allows for the defendant to be adequately represented. This law firm did the best they can under the circumstances as they have a duty under the law to be an advocate for their client, no matter what the clients mental state is.. That's the way our system works. They are bound to provide the best defense possible. They did their job.

I agree with your feelings and commentary. Now that Lebarre's attys are appealing the process, let's hope they are *patriotic* and take on the entire cost of the appeal, including those of the state. Ms Lebarre has taken more than she deserved from the state of NH's citizens. The sole reason for the appeal is because this law firm wanted only to win a landmark case and be the first to win the *insanity defense* in the state of NH. Let the Denner law firm pay to financial costs to redeem their failed reputation, not the citizen's of NH. Let NH use the money for a worthier cause.

You're obviously missing the point, Jack Lance. Have you ever served on a jury for a DOUBLE murder trial? I think not. GET A CLUE!!!
- BENNY, Tilton
How very strange that an American (presumably) citizen would find it appropriate and necessary to applaud an American jury for doing its job by following the law. This is an insulting, ignorant, and unpatriotic essay, and its publication so close to the 4th of July makes it all the more bewildering.

I agree with your editorial. LaBarre was a scheming, evil woman who got exactly what she deserved. Accolades to the jury that ensured she would not get away with murder. Justice has prevailed.
