UNH poll: Sununu v. Shaheen is now a close race

A University of New Hampshire Survey Center poll shows the U.S. Senate race is up for grabs. Democrat Jeanne Shaheen's lead over GOP incumbent John Sununu has all but disappeared.

Sununu had trailed the former governor by 12 percent in the center's April poll. He closed the gap to 4 percent in a July 11-20 survey, which has an admitted 4.3 percent margin of error. The race remains volatile, as just 22 percent of the 475 likely voters surveyed are firmly committed to a candidate.

First-term U.S. House member Carol Shea-Porter continues to trail the man she ousted, Republican Jeb Bradley. The Democrat is 6 points behind the former 1st District congressman. She leads Bradley's main competitor for the GOP nomination, John Stephen, by just 6 points -- even though most voters do not know much about him. Shea-Porter's favorability rating has slipped to 35 percent, an unusually low score for an incumbent.

In the 2nd District, U.S. Rep. Paul Hodes continues to increase his favorability rating and holds solid leads over two potential November opponents, Jennifer Horn and Bob Clegg. Neither Republican is well known in the district.
