Intervenors in a proposal to build a large wind power project in the North Country say they're worried about what the project will do to the landscape and economy.

Granite Reliable Power has applied to build a 99-megawatt wind park in Dummer, Dixville, Odell, Millsfield and Erving's Location in Coos County.

Next week, the New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee will begin about two weeks of hearings on the $275 million project in Concord. Seven North Country residents and three organizations filed by the Sept. 18 deadline to intervene on the project, which gives them an opportunity to participate in the proceedings.

Millsfield Selectman Wayne Urso filed to intervene on behalf of the residents of his community.

"The citizens of Millsfield want to totally stop the wind farm project unless we are involved in every aspect of the proposed wind farm," Urso wrote.

Jonathan Frizzell, an abutter from Colebrook, said he simply wanted to be able to receive mail and be placed on the service list.

Appalachian Mountain Club described a "long-standing interest" in wind power, citing policy on high-elevation lands. The project would "directly affect the interests of the organization and our members," wrote Dr. David Publicover.

Lisa Linowes of Lyman wrote on behalf of Industrial Wind Action, saying that the organization is concerned about the impact of the project.

The NH Wind Energy Association also filed, saying it has an "interest in orderly development" of power in the state.

Sonja Sheldon of Millsfield said she is an abutter to the project and was "never informed" by the company of its plans. She filed to intervene and wanted to ensure her rights.

Jon Odell of Lancaster, a retired educator and outdoorsman, expressed concern for wildlife and indigenous fish.

Robert and Kathlyn Keene of Jefferson also filed separately to intervene, voicing similar concerns.

Hearings

What: The New Hampshire Site Evaluation Committee will hold two weeks of hearings on Granite Reliable Power's request to build a 99-megawatt wind power facility in Coos County.

When: The meetings will begin at 9 a.m. on March 9.

Where: 21 South Fruit St., Concord. The committee plans a one-day public comment session at the end of the hearings, but no date or location for that meeting has been set.

"I believe that each citizen of New Hampshire has a duty and responsibility to balance our growth against the importance of preserving our natural resources and rural spaces," she wrote.

Clean Power Development LLC, which has plans to develop three biomass plants, including one 25-megawatt facility in Berlin, also filed. They have an application, filed in February 2008, to connect into the power grid. While the company did not oppose the wind park, it stated it had a "substantial interest," one of the criteria for inclusion as intervenor.

The applicant objected to some of the requests.

The committee, however, agreed to allow partial or group-intervenor status and allowed Clean Power Development to be a full intervenor. The applicant did not object to AMC's request.
