House votes to reject higher speed limits on Winnipesaukee
CONCORD - A move to boost speed limits on one section of Lake Winnipesaukee was soundly defeated in the House today, 276-75.
Senate Bill 27 would have allowed boaters to travel at a speed of 55 miles per hour in daylight hours in the 14-square mile Broads section of the state's largest lake.
Opponents of the higher speed limits said residents and businesses in the Lakes Region like the speed limits that were put into place two years ago.
Limits are uniform across the entire lake, at 45 mph in the daytime and 30 mph at night. Those who want to maintain the limits say they have made the lake safer and quieter.
Those who wanted to boost the legal daytime limits said it is a matter of being fair to owners of large boats, as well as protecting personal liberties the state should value.
Senate Bill 27 passed the Senate by the thinnest of margins, 13-11.
