SALEM -- An area man died this afternoon after being accidentally run over by a co-worker's SUV while he was underneath the vehicle looking for problems.

Police have identified the victim of Wednesday's fatal accident in Salem as 75-year-old Nicholas Camuso of Seabrook.

Camuso was transported to Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Mass., with life-threatening injuries this afternoon, said Salem Deputy Police Chief Shawn Patten.

A medical flight was called to bring Camuso to Boston for further treatment, but he died before he could be transported, Patten said.

At about 12:40 p.m., Camuso was talking with a coworker, 51-year-old Linda Nault of Derry in the parking lot of 287 Lawrence Road in Salem, said Patten. The pair were discussing problems Nault had been having with her Ford Expedition and Camuso offered to help, said Patten.

While Nault went inside the building to get her car keys, Camuso climbed underneath the SUV to look for problems, Patten said. When Nault returned outside, she got in her vehicle and moved it, not realizing Camuso was underneath, Patten said.

The Salem Police Accident Reconstruction Team remains at the scene for investigation. Patten said preliminary reports say neither speed nor impairment contributed to the incident.
