First lady Michelle Obama and the wife of Vice President Joe Biden will be in New Hampshire Sunday to highlight efforts by Granite Staters to support members of the military and their families.

Michelle Obama and Jill Biden are expected to appear together at an event in Manchester, said Adjutant Gen. William N. Reddel, commander of the New Hampshire National Guard.

Biden is expected to appear at the eighth annual Operation Thank You, an appreciation for service men and women, at the Redhook Brewery in Portsmouth. The event, which is open to the public, raises money for the Chaplain’s Emergency Relief Fund in New Hampshire. That event runs from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Details have not been finalized for the Manchester event, which will take place in the early evening. But it will be hosted by the White House spouses to honor National Guard and reserve families.

In April, Obama and Biden launched Joining Forces, an effort to involve all sectors of society — schools, churches, non-profits, the business community — in the support of military members and their families.

“I feel really privileged that they are coming,” Reddel said. “We believe we have, I’m not saying the best model, I’m saying a great model. I’m hoping they can see value in the model we have.”

Obama and Biden have traveled to other communities to talk about Joining Forces, and a White House website lists volunteer opportunities for civilians in their communities.

Less than 1 percent of the country’s population is in uniform, Reddel said.

Reddel said the visit to New Hampshire will highlight the New Hampshire Deployment Cycle Support Program. The National Guard uses the program to support families of Guard members, reservists and active-duty warriors who are deployed.

Support can include financial, social and behavioral health.

“We take care of our warriors,” Reddel said.
