With win, Bedford one victory from American Legion World Series

OLD ORCHARD BEACH, Maine — One win away and two chances today to grab it.

Bedford Post 54 is within reach of its first-ever American Legion World Series berth after eliminating Worcester East Post 201 by a 3-1 score Sunday at the double-elimination Northeast Regional at The Ballpark.

Ryan Mossman gave undefeated Post 54 its third complete game in the tournament and Pat Parker drove in two runs while scoring another to set up a championship showdown today (first pitch set for 1.p.m.), with once-beaten Whitestown (N.Y.) Post 1113.

Should Bedford lose that game, the teams would play again at 7 p.m.

The upshot? Bedford is that close to heading on to Shelby, N.C., where the ALWS will get under way this week.

“We’ve been dreaming about this all season,” said Mossman. “If we do not make it, then it’s a failed season for us. This is the best team I’ve ever played for.”

Said Parker, “I’m really excited. We’re going in undefeated. I think we have a good team. I think we can do this and make it to North Carolina.”

Mossman battled Worcester’s Kyle Brenner to a 1-1 draw through four innings.

Bedford scored in the top of the first, after Brenner struck out Mike Skilton, who reached first anyway when the ball bounded away from catcher John Boyd.

Skilton was later doubled in by Parker.

Worcester answered right away with a run in the bottom of the first by taking advantage of a pair of Bedford errors.

The first of those allowed Joe Consolmagno to reach safely with one away.

Consolmagno made his way to third, then scored on Ysander Figueroa’s grounder to second.

Bedford threatened again in the second inning, when Joe Maher singled, Matt Woodmansee walked, and both runners moved into scoring position on Mike Laflamme’s infield out.

However, Brenner buckled down and retired the next two Bedford hitters.

“Their pitcher was very good,” said Parker. “He threw strikes and had a nice little slider that kept us off balance.”

Mossman found himself in a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the bottom of the third, escaped unscathed when the Bedford infield turned in a slick double play on Steve Flynn’s sharp bouncer to shortstop Ian Urquhart.

“I think I just lost my composure a little bit,” said Mossman, who hadn’t started a game all season. “I lost my focus. I didn’t rely on my team as much, and was trying to do too much. I settled down, and it was real good.”

Worcester turned a double play behind Brenner in the top of the fifth, but with two down, Bedford was able to string three singles together, with Parker knocking in Skilton to make it 2-1.

“I just tried to get the ball in play,” said Parker. “Just trying to do a job up there. I’m the ‘four’ hitter, so I’ve got to do things right.”

Bedford led from then on, and added an eighth inning insurance run when Parker ran home from second on a passed ball and throwing error committed on the same play.

“We’re very confident,” said Bedford manager Tim Conway, “but we can’t be too confident. We’ve still got one more game to win. We’re not there yet.”

No, but closer than they’ve ever been.
