SB 500 critics not renominated to parole board

BRETTON WOODS - Gov. John Lynch nominated former Commissioner of Safety Dick Flynn and former State Rep. Donna Sytek of Salem to the Adult Parole Board.

Colin Manning, press secretary for the governor, said “the governor is excited to bring in two people with a wealth of criminal justice experience.”

The two will replace Gregory Crompton and Alan Coburn, both outspoken critics of Senate Bill 500, which has since been repealed.

Crompton believes he was not renominated because he was critical of the holes in SB 500 and the lack of parole board input as the law was being drafted.

SB 500 mandated all offenders be released within nine months of their maximum term to the community under supervision and that parole violators only be returned for 90 days. Last month, the governor signed legislation that gives the board more discretion.

Crompton said he contacted the governor's office about whether he would be re-appointed and received word from his office yesterday and was told the governor “wants to go in a new direction.”

Manning, when asked if the decision was payback for SB 500 criticism, cited the credentials of the nominees.

Sytek authored the state's Truth in Sentencing Law and Flynn was Commissioner of Safety for about 35 years and a former Dover police chief, Manning said.

A confirmation vote could come as early as Aug. 24.
