Teen says she was stopped by man posing as cop
CANDIA — A teenage girl driving on Route 27 late Friday night was stopped by a man claiming to be a police officer. The girl quickly realized he was not a police officer when he asked her to step out of the car without ever asking for her license or registration.
Candia Police Officer Dan Gray said the girl was stopped by a dark, four-door sedan with no light bar, but with blue and white flashing lights that possibly came from the dash, around 11:20 p.m. on Friday on Route 27 near the Hooksett line.
The man, described as about six feet tall, medium to thin build, with dark hair and sideburns asked the girl three times to get out of the car, but never asked for her license or registration.
Gray said the man pulled on the girl’s seat belt as if to check it but did not physically touch her. Gray said the man became "assertive" when the girl refused to get out of the car. She realized the man was not a police officer, locked the door, rolled up the window and drove away.
The incident was reported to police on Saturday.
Gray said a resident witnessed the stop and confirmed that it was not a Candia police cruiser that had the car pulled over.
Gray said the man appeared to be wearing a badge.
He said there have been no similar reports he is aware of in the area. He said anyone unsure about being stopped in a dark, unpopulated area should slow down, drive to a well-lit area and call 911.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to call the Candia Police Department at 438-2318.
