UNH flashing professor will not be in classroom

  • LARKIN

DURHAM - A University of New Hampshire professor who flashed a mother and daughter will not be allowed to teach after he returns to campus in January, the school said in a statement issued Tuesday morning.

Edward Larkin, a professor of German, showed his genitals in a Market Basket parking lot in Milford in July 2009. UNH tried but was unsuccessful in firing him for the incident.

This spring, an arbitrator ruled Larkin's crime - he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor indecent exposure - was not bad enough to warrant firing and instead recommended a one semester unpaid suspension beginning this fall.

With Larkin set to return to campus in January, UNH said Tuesday he would not be going back to the classroom, nor would he teach or have any contact with students for a three-year probationary period.

“University officials are working to ensure that Professor Ed Larkin's return to campus in spring 2012 will not further adversely affect the university community,” UNH spokesman Erika Mantz said in a statement. “The safety and well-being of our students is the number one priority.”

“Professor Larkin's duties for the spring 2012 semester, established by the chair of the department in consultation with the dean of the College of Liberal Arts, will include his independent scholarly work, assisting with the development of online German courses to be launched in 2012-13, and assisting the acting chair of the department with administrative duties. While academic responsibilities are determined prior to each semester Professor Larkin has been notified that he will not be teaching or permitted to meet with students during the three-year probationary period set by the arbitrator.”

It's unclear whether Larkin agreed not to teach for three years. He did not return a call for comment.

Larkin's reinstatement, under the terms of the faculty contract, caused an uproar and led to criticism from the Milford police chief and numerous politicians.

The arbitrator's ruling was binding and UNH officials could not overrule it unless a procedural mistake was made, which they admitted early on had not happened.

Larkin's salary is $88,000 per year.
