GOP calls for more boycott pressure over Nevada caucus
As part of a series of jockeying moves, Nevada Republicans last week moved their date to Jan. 14, within four days of New Hampshire's Presidential Primary.
Secretary of State William Gardner says that could push the Primary here into December, because state law requires it to be seven days ahead of any similar election.
Jennifer Horn, director of We the People, said the state has to work together to protect the Primary and support Gardner.
“This is bigger than any one candidate, bigger than any one campaign bigger than any one party,” she said.
Horn said voters can sign a petition on “Boycottnevada.org” to express support for Gardner. She also urged them to call their favorite candidate and tell them to boycott the Nevada caucus until it is moved back 72 hours.
Five candidates have said they will boycott Nevada - Jon Huntsman, Newt Gingrich, Herman Cain, Michelle Bachmann and Rick Santorum. All but Huntsman attended the Nevada debate aired on CNN Tuesday, however.
Horn did not criticize those who went to Nevada after pledging a boycott. She said they, “took advantage of national platform to speak to as many voters as possible.”
Among those joining Horn were GOP candidate for governor Ovide Lamontagne, former GOP chair Jayne Millerick, Cornerstone Action director Kevin Smith, New Hampshire Liberty Caucus chair Andrew Hemingway, Senate President Peter Bragdon. Speaker of the House William O'Brien and House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt were not able to attend, but sent statements of support.
State Republican Party chair Wayne MacDonald, who last week said Gardner did not need to react to Nevada, changed his tune a bit today. He said in a prepared statement “ultimately, the GOP supports whatever steps Secretary Gardner takes to enforce our law to ensure that New Hampshire's primary is first by a week.”
Lamontagne said he's with Gardner, and thinks he will eventually prevail.
“I'm not a betting man, but if I were I'd put my money on Bill Gardner,” he said.
Most speakers said they have not settled on a single candidate in the GOP primary yet. They did not say the boycott issue would be a deciding factor in their final choice, although Bragdon said it would be a significant factor for him.
Smith said Huntsman, “got it right” by boycotting the CNN debate. He said “people reward those who work hard in New Hampshire.”
Hemingway called the whole situation a “travesty,” and expressed “disgust for the political gamesmanship currently happening in the Republican party.
He said Mitt Romney, who owns property on Lake Winnipesaukee, has yet to deny that he was involved in Nevada's decision to rush in behind New Hampshire.
“If this is the level he will go to as a candidate, what level will he be willing to go to as President? I shudder to think.”
Romney spokesman Ryan Williams sidestepped the question about Romney's role in Nevada's decision.
In a statement, Williams said "It is up to each state to determine the date of their primary or caucus. Gov. Romney will compete in every nominating contest across the country, regardless of when they may be scheduled, so long as New Hampshire retains its first in the nation primary status."
