Pirates power play sinks Monarchs, 5-3
The Portland Pirates scored three goals in the third period and held on for a 5-3 win over the visiting Manchester Monarchs Wednesday night.
Portland (2-1-1) scored three power-play goals on the night. Manchester (3-3-0) concludes its six-game road trip with visits to Connecticut Friday and Worcester Saturday.
Portland broke a 2-2 tie with a power-play goal at 7:16 of the third period. Andy Miele pounced on a loose puck and snapped it high past Martin Jones from point-blank range.
The Pirates extended to a 4-2 lead at 10:03 when Ryan Duncan beat Jones with a wraparound goal.
Manchester cut the lead to 4-3 at 14:22 when rookie Linden Vey recorded his pro goal off a David Meckler pass.
Miele closed the game out with an empty net goal for Portland with 1:18 remaining.
The loss is the second in a row for the Monarchs, who scored just once on seven power play chances.
Trailing 2-1 to open the third period, Manchester took advantage of a funny bounce to tie the game at the 3:51 mark of the final frame.
The puck was played into the Portland zone and Pirates goalie Justin Pogge went behind the net to play it.
But the puck took a funny carom off the side boards and went right in front of the net where Monarchs captain Marc-Andre Cliche was there for an easy tap-in to a wide-open cage.
The Monarchs drew first blood, scoring 2:36 into the game on the power play. Jordan Nolan took a Jake Muzzin feed at the Pirates blue line and broke in alone, beating Pogge for the 1-0 lead.
Portland tied the game at 1-1 with a power-play goal of its own at 9:29. Nathan Oystrick cut to the net and chipped home a pass from Duncan.
The Pirates scored the lone goal of the second period to take a 2-1 lead. Oystrick struck again, beating Jones five-hole off a Miele feed during the waning seconds of a five-on-three power play.
