BG boys erupt against Memorial
MANCHESTER — Bishop Guertin of Nashua stole the momentum and defeated Manchester Memorial, 4-2, in a cold and soggy first-round Division I boys’ soccer tournament match.
The ninth-seeded visitors’ future seemed as bleak as Thursday’s weather with 13 minutes remaining. No. 8 Memorial owned a 2-1 lead and was carrying play.
But the Cardinals rallied, scoring three goals in a four-minute span, and advanced to the quarterfinal round of this single-elimination tourney. The 7-8-2 club earned a Sunday afternoon rendezvous with top-seeded and unbeaten Manchester Central.
“I’m dumbfounded. I’m at a loss for words at what happened. We make a mistake and before you know it, we’re down by two goals,” said Memorial coach Paul Ostberg after watching his 8-9 club’s season come to an abrupt halt.
The avalanche began when freshman Chris Arling swiped the ball away from Memorial keeper Gary Archambault, who had trouble coming out to cleanly collar a ball that short-hopped and skidded to his right.
“It seemed to drop out of his grasp and I stole it away,” said Arling. His second goal of the season tied the game and revitalized BG’s hope with 12:48 left to play.
The Cardinals then quickly created scoring chances. Memorial defender Dan Gilon fended off a three-on-one break. Archambault, a junior, leaped and fully outstretched his body to make a tip save, landing awkwardly on his elbow.
He couldn’t lift his arm and collect another shot. Rodrigo Mena scored on the carom, putting the Cardinals ahead with 10:46 left. Archambault left the game, needing medical treatment. JV keeper Mark Schrepfer took over.
Less than two minutes later, junior William Arling, Chris’ older brother, netted a penalty kick after being tripped up tiptoeing along the end line near the net. BG led 4-2, leaving Memorial 8:02 for a comeback.
“The momentum just kept building,” said William Arling. “We had to work hard to overcome playing on the road, ignoring the playing conditions and finding a way to comeback.”
The Cardinals took an early first-half lead on a bang-bang play culminating in Matt Feenan’s header goal.
Memorial seemed unimpressed. They came back from a one-goal deficit to earn a 3-1 regular-season win over BG.
Enzo Salvatico tied the game by bending a 30-yard a goal into the upper net corner in the first half.
Mitch Lapierre fought hard to shed two defenders in the corner to send a cross across the goal face. Connor Gerton headed it home and Memorial owned a 2-1 lead.
They were 22:28 away from an anticipated quarterfinal rematch with Central and looking for an insurance goal. Cardinal keeper Jeffrey L’Heureux saved Ryan Bannon’s bid and came out to steal a shot away from Logan Madden.
“We were in a funk. We couldn’t get any rhythm going once we got behind. I felt uncomfortable about our chances. But then we capitalized,” said Guertin coach Patrick Mulcahy.
