Rescuers aid injured hiker
CARROLL - A Massachusetts man did what he could late Saturday when he injured his ankle while hiking in Crawford Notch, but it wasn't until another hiker came upon him Sunday that he got help.
Sergio Mori, 41, of Brookline, Mass., had set out on a hike up Mount Eisenhower at about 9 a.m. Saturday, according to Fish and Game conservation officer Matt Holmes.
While descending Edmand's Path later in the day, he fell and injured his ankle and was unable to walk, Holmes said. With no cell service in the remote area, Mori "made efforts to spend the night in the woods, where temperatures fell into the low 20s," he said.
Mori was well-prepared, he said, and early Sunday morning another hiker came upon Mori and summoned help.
Just before 10 a.m., rescue teams began heading up Edmund's Path and a Twin Mountain firefighter made contact just after noon, finding Mori about 2 miles from the trailhead. Conservation officers, a ranger from the US Forest Service and additional volunteer firefighters went to the aid of Mori, assisting him in walking down the trail.
He and the rescue teams were back at the trailhead just after 5 p.m. Sunday and he was taken to Littleton Hospital for treatment.
