Helping back home: A hand for military families

Think of all the dirty, thankless and dangerous tasks our military personnel are doing overseas right now. From digging ditches and building roads to tracking and fighting the Taliban, not a day goes by when Americans in uniform are not giving their all to both keep us safe and, in the process, make life better for the people of Afghanistan and Iraq as well as numerous other places in the world.

Meanwhile, their families back home sometimes struggle to complete all of their household chores. It can be hard when mom or dad is overseas for months.

To help out, some thoughtful people have gotten together to offer free lawn care and snow plowing services for military families who have a member serving overseas. With winter about to set in, you know what that means. And so do the plow drivers who are joining this cause.

“We’re proud to lend a hand to help our local military families who already carry so much on their shoulders — the last thing they should be worrying about is digging out after the next snowstorm,” Dale Squires of Belknap Landscape Co. told this newspaper. Squires’ company is just one that has joined the New Hampshire Landscape Association’s Snow Care for the Troops program, a thoughtful initiative in the great New Hampshire tradition of neighbor helping neighbor.

It’s nice to show your thanks by coming out to the Veterans Day parade and waving a flag. It’s better to pitch in and help out a military family that needs it. If you know of any families that have a member serving overseas and need help clearing the driveway on snowy days, well, you could plow or shovel it yourself. Or you could let them know about this project. The phone number is 1-888-611-2956.
