ATKINSON - A local woman died Wednesday in a 'freak' accident, Police Chief Philip V. Consentino said.
Consentino said Virginia Alexander, 80, was getting out of her car after parking it in the driveway of her 45 Coventry Road home Wednesday morning.
The car started rolling and struck her as she was trying to stop it, he said.
A reconstruction team from the Salem Police Department is trying to determine if she was run over by the car or if she was killed by striking her head on the driveway's pavement, the chief said.
'We don't know at this point,' he said. 'It appears it was just a plain freak accident.'
The car rolled out of the driveway, went across the street and hit a tree, he said. Her husband, whose name is listed as James in phone records, was in the car as the accident happened, Consentino said.
'It was a horrifying thing,' Consentino said.
The couple had lived in the home about 10 years. Virginia Alexander was taken to Lawrence General Hospital in Lawrence, Mass., where she was pronounced dead.
