State officials mull billing family to find missing son

HAMPSTEAD — State officials are considering billing a family for the $15,630 it cost to find 9-year-old Devin Frenette.

“That’s still being discussed, to be honest with you,” said Maj. Kevin Jordan of the New Hampshire Fish and Game Department. “We’re still considering our options.”

Devin disappeared for about 30 hours on Oct. 17, prompting a massive air and ground search involving nearly 300 members of law enforcement and volunteers. Devin was found by the owners of a nearby home, where he was sleeping under their bed with a carton of ice cream and a bottle of water.

He disappeared again eight days later and was found by volunteers hiding in a tree.

Jordan said officials usually consider billing after any search.

“The cost very quickly rises to a good deal of money,” he said.

Should the Fish and Game Department recommend billing the Frenette family, the matter would be forwarded to Attorney General Michael Delaney for consideration, Jordan said.
