MANCHESTER — The bad memory lingers and proved to be a big motivating factor in Trinity of Manchester's 74-43 win over defending Division I champion Bishop Guertin of Nashua at home before a near-capacity crowd.

The two teams met in last season's championship game. Just about every current Trinity player was there. There were just two seniors on the roster.

“I still remember how it felt after losing the championship. We all do,” said Trinity sophomore Carmen Giampetruzzi, who helped his club get off to a quick start Friday night, finishing with 19 points, eight rebounds, three assists and two blocked shots.

“We wanted to come out and show the state how good we can play. We got some revenge, but we haven't really won anything yet. Hopefully that comes at the end of the season,” said the forward.

Bishop Guertin (4-5) didn't have a similar emotional attachment to the rematch. Seven players graduated from the title team. This squad was too busy rebuilding to think back to last year's triumph.

“They just tore us up inside,” said BG coach Jim Migneault. “Everybody picked Trinity to win it all at the beginning of the year and they are playing like they should. We played a little selfish at times. It's been a problem all year and that's not good. But we're learning and building toward tournament time.”

Trinity started strong, using quick and decisive passes to work players free on the weak side and around the perimeter. Its defensive pressure forced the Cardinals to take quick shots. Pioneer big men dominated the boards at both ends. They led by 10 after one quarter and 24 at intermission.

“It's desire, not height that produces rebounds,” said Giampetruzzi, who looks short standing beside fellow frontcourt teammates despite standing 6-foot-3.

Six-foot-6 Andrew Lauderdale was the recipient of many bounce passes down low on the weak side, netting 19 points while collaring eight rebounds. Six-foot-7 Mabor Gabriel scored 16 points and pulled down 13 rebounds. Six-foot-10 Silvere Aluko came off the bench to score five while blocking four shots and drawing a key offensive charge. Despite having his shooting hand taped, Jake Hamel swished four 3-pointers.

The Cardinals' full-court defense wreaked havoc for Trinity in the third quarter. Forced turnovers ignited a 12-2 run cutting the lead 14, but Trinity opened the final quarter with a 16-1 run and both teams emptied the bench for the final four minutes of the game.

Joseph McCarthy was BG's bright spot. The 6-foot-5 senior tallied 16 points, hitting three treys and also banked home tough shots in the paint. Logan Kesty, who once played for Trinity, scored eight points and led the club with six rebounds.

“They play physical and we wanted to attack the boards early and take control of the game,” said Gabriel. “I think we gave them more than they expected.”
