Portsmouth police searching for man who robbed market
PORTSMOUTH – Police are looking for a man who robbed the Tedeschi convenience store at gunpoint early Sunday night.
Police Sgt. Kuffer Kaltenborn said officers responded to the store at 642 Islington St. at 5:16 p.m. after receiving a report of a lone robber who pointed a handgun at a female store clerk and demanded money.
The clerk was standing behind the counter at the time and complied with his demands. She handed over an undisclosed amount of cash to the robber, who covered his face with a red bandana and a black hat, Kaltenborn said.
The clerk, who was not injured in the robbery, was the only employee working and no customers were inside the store at the time of the hold up.
The robber fled on foot and at some point removed the bandana and hat, which police found in an area about 150 yards behind the store, Kaltenborn said. No weapon was located.
A police canine was brought in to track a scent from the area where the hat and bandana were found, but Kaltenborn said the dog was unable to find any new leads.
The robber was described as a tall white man in his 20s with a muscular and stocky build, weighing about 210 pounds. In addition to the hat and bandana, he wore dark blue jeans, a dark “puffy” jacket, Kaltenborn said.
Detectives continued to process the scene for digital, physical and forensic evidence at 9 p.m. Sunday.
Anyone with information on the robbery is asked to call Portsmouth Detective Sgt. Rich Webb at 610-7671. Anonymous tips can also be made by calling Crime Stoppers at 431-1199 or (207) 439-1199.
