Trader Joe's confirms plan for Fox Run store

NEWINGTON — Gourmet grocer Trader Joe's is coming to the Crossings at Fox Run.

The Monday announcement created chatter on local social media sites and was confirmed by company officials on Tuesday.

It is the second Trader Joe's set to open in the state this year, with an announcement in December that the Tyngsboro, Mass., store would be moved over the border into Nashua this year as well.

The California-based “neighborhood grocery store” is known for its unique decor and products.

The Newington store at 45 Gosling Road will be about 14,700 square feet and will offer beer and wine, as well as Trader Joe's signature products, the company said in a prepared release.

The store will feature Trader Joe's signature cedar-covered walls and Hawaiian motifs, including employees or “crew members” in Hawaiian shirts. Officials said the festive decor will also include a “local flair” of art celebrating the neighborhood.

Nearby residents may also start receiving a copy of Fearless Flyer, the company's “somewhat irreverent description of a timely selection of Trader's Joe products” after the store opens.

More than 1,000 items are offered under the Trader Joe's private label, including Trader Jose's salsas, Trader Ming's fried rice, Trader Giotto's marinara sauces and specially purchased items.

The grocer purchases direct from manufacturers, not from distributors, and will take a brand name product, remove the preservatives and artificial colors and ingredients, and reissue it under the Trader Joe's label and sell it at a discount, the release from the company says.

Trader Joe's began in 1958 in the Los Angeles area and has since expanded to more than 365 “neighborhood grocery stores” in 31 states.

“Essentially, Trader Joe's does well wherever they go,” Don Mace, a representative with KeyPoint Partners, the property management and leasing agent for the Crossings at Fox Run said Friday after confirming the grocer had signed a lease to come to Newington.

Alison Mochizuki, director of public relations for Trader Joe's in Monrovia, Calif., said the company does not have a timeframe yet on when either the Nashua or Newington stores would open, except to say they are both scheduled to open this year.

She said Trader Joe's considers itself a neighborhood grocery and Newington seemed like a good fit.

“There are a lot of foodies in the neighborhood,” Mochizuki said.
