Printer fire forces Stratham school evacuation

STRATHAM – A laser jet printer caught fire on the second floor of the Cooperative Middle School Tuesday afternoon, filling part of the school with smoke and prompting a brief evacuation.

Exeter Assistant Fire Chief Ken Berkenbush said the fire began around 2:30 p.m. but was quickly put out by school workers who used a fire extinguisher.

The fire burned a hole in the center of the printer and sent smoke into parts of the school, located at 100 Academic Way. Berkenbush said the fire was limited to the printer and caused no structural damage.

Fire alarms sounded and the school was evacuated, but students were allowed to return to the first floor by 3 p.m., Berkenbush said.

Editor's note: An earlier edition of this story said the school was in Exeter. It is part of the Exeter Region Cooperative School District, but is located in Stratham.
