House votes to save $26M surplus for a rainy day
CONCORD – The House voted 260-81 to initially approve to put a projected $26 million surplus from the last fiscal year into the state’s rainy day fund.
Supporters of House Bill 1652 said Wednesday the bill sends the message that fiscal responsibility is back in the Concord, but opponents said the money should be used to pay off debts the state owes.
“Let’s show citizens we’re more concerned about doing the right thing not the easy thing,” said House Majority Leader D.J. Bettencourt. “The fun times are over.”
The bill’s prime sponsor, Rep. Keith Murphy, R-Bedford, said the money begins the process of rebuilding the state’s savings account.
The bill will go the House Finance Committee for further review before coming back to the House for a final vote.
