Police K-9 runs down man who allegedly hid drugs at doughnut shop
MANCHESTER — A police dog ran down a man who allegedly shoved a police officer after trying to hide his drugs at a local doughnut shop, Sgt. Todd Boucher said.
Boucher said Officer Scott Ardita confronted the man after going into the Dunkin' Donuts at the corner of Valley and Elm streets about 4 p.m. Saturday.
“He wasn’t there to get doughnuts,” Boucher said. “He was getting a cup of coffee when another person informed him that they’d seen a man put drugs under the counter when they saw Ardita come in.”
Boucher said Ardita found the drugs and confronted Matthew Franklin, 25, who Boucher said is homeless. Franklin grabbed the small bag of drugs, put them in his mouth, shoved Ardita and ran, Boucher said.
Ardita used a remote control to open the back of his police SUV, and his partner, Lou the police dog, jumped out and ran after Franklin, the sergeant said.
“The dog made the apprehension. They’re very well-trained animals,” Boucher said.
Franklin is charged with drug possession, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer.
