Titles up for grabs in gymnastics, wrestling, bowling this weekend
Championship Saturday could be a banner day for Pinkerton of Derry, favored to win NHIAA titles in bowling and gymnastics, but nobody touches Timberlane of Plaistow when it comes to wrestling.
Timberlane hosts the Division I state wrestling meet on Saturday and goes for its 13th consecutive team title. Here's a look at the NHIAA's big day:
Gymnastics
Olivia Bogaczyk and Courtney Thompson lead the high-flying and undefeated Astros, who are heavy favorites after averaging 137.6 points per meet during the regular season. Saturday's first session (9 a.m.) at Salem High will feature Olympic-style rotations with gymnasts from Souhegan of Amherst, Nashua South, Hollis/Brookline, Spaulding of Rochester, Nashua North and Pelham. The second session (1 p.m.) features Pinkerton, Salem, Keene, Exeter and Londonderry. Last year, Pinkerton won the meet with a 136.525 score to defeat Salem at 129.675, followed by Exeter.
Several talented individual performers will compete for the all-around title, including Paige Smith of Farmington, Morgan Wallingford of Dover and Carolyn Nichols from Bishop Guertin of Nashua.
Salem coach Ginnie LaVallo said the Blue Devils must perform their best and hope for a minor miracle to defeat the Astros. Salem, seeded second, will be competing without Marrina Mayo (broken ankle). Pinkerton senior Courtney Thompson, a Level 10 gymnast, has turned in a fabulous season and will be looking to win the all-around title. Freshman Brittany Capozzi and freshman Amanda Cioli are also top competitors for the Astros, who've gone undefeated for consecutive seasons.
“Pinkerton is the No. 1 team, by far. Salem and Londonderry would need to have their best meet of the year and Pinkerton would need five girls to fall apart on the same day. That just doesn't happen. Pinkerton is just too strong,” LaVallo said.
Wrestling
Nine-time New England Regional champion Timberlane may be favored to repeat as state champs, but head coach Barry Chooljian is expecting a stern test on Saturday in Plaistow. “Pinkerton, Manchester Central and Concord all have very good clubs,” he said. “On paper, we're the best team coming into the tournament, but if those three teams combine to do well, they will make a difference.”
Chooljian's younger wrestlers are still unproven in state competition, but many of them gained important experience as the Owls won their own invitational tournament last month against top competition around New England.
Last year, the Owls defeated Mount Anthony of Bennington, Vt., by a 57-point margin to capture a record ninth New England title. They also became the first program to win four straight regional titles and six in a span of seven seasons.
Timberlane has won a state record 12 straight state tournaments (sharing the 2000 crown with Salem and Concord) and Chooljian was the head coach when the Owls won six straight Class I-M-S (1993-1998) titles.
At the recent Timberlane Invitational, five Owls were crowned champions: freshman Jake Durkin (106), senior Zach Bridson (113), junior Josh Burnham (132), junior Josh Riley (160) and senior Efrain Rolon (170). Five other Owls finished runner-up: junior Adam Corey (120), freshman Dan Scalzo (126), senior Tyler Michaud (145) and senior Luke Morrier (152).
Other top New Hampshire wrestlers to watch on Saturday are Dan Roger (120) of Londonderry, Keaton Peterson (138) of Manchester Central, Malcolm Sutton (182) of Central, Joey Fitzwater (220) of Memorial and Steve Dwight (285) of Memorial; Tanner Burke (145) of Pinkerton; Zach Daigle of Pinkerton (138).
In Division II, Hollis/Brookline and Milford will be battling it out for the title on Saturday at 9 a.m. at Merrimack High.
Zach McPherson (120) and Casey Quinn (160) will lead the Cavaliers while Joe Albina (170) and Andrew Bellantoni (285) will pace Milford.
Other grapplers to watch are Aaron Welch (106) of Manchester West, Zach Cronin (132) of Merrimack, Peter Shea (138) of Goffstown, Eric Cooper (145) of Bedford and Michael Galinat (182) of Bedford.
Pelham will host the Division III state tournament on Saturday at 9 a.m.
“Windham will be the team to beat,” said Plymouth Regional head coach Randy Cleary, who guided the Bobcats to the state title last season. “We'll be in the hunt and John Stark (of Weare) is another team to watch. They've got most of their wrestlers back from last year.”
Plymouth has won nine overall state titles. Wrestlers to watch are Josh Mederois of Pelham (120), Carleton Kleinschrodt of White Mountains Regional, Tyler Siverhus (132) of Windham, Aaron Williams (145) of Plymouth and Dakoda Simula (220) of Plymouth.
Bowling
Shawn Fitzpatrick from Stevens of Claremont bowled a perfect 300 on Feb. 4, but Pinkerton's Nick Stilian enters the finals as the state's No. 1-ranked bowler. The event will be held Saturday at Spare Time Manchester beginning at 11 a.m.
There will be three play-in matches to open the day. No. 8 Raymond will face No. 9 Keene, sixth-seeded Hollis-Brookline will meet No. 11 Laconia and No. 7 Spaulding (the defending state champs) will play No. 10 Berlin.
In the second round, No. 4 Stevens will meet No. 5 Souhegan, top-ranked Pinkerton will await the winner of the Raymond/Keene match, No. 3 Goffstown will face the Hollis-Brookline/Laconia winner and No. 2 Merrimack will play the winner of the Spaulding/Berlin match. Last year, Spaulding defeated Pinkerton 4-1 in the 2011 championship, the first year the sport was officially sanctioned by the NHIAA.
