Wildcats shocked by UVM

DURHAM — This time, Vermont stole two points, not just one, from the University of New Hampshire hockey team.

The Catamounts got a game-tying, extra attacker goal from sophomore forward H.T. Lenz — him again — with 13.3 seconds left in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Then senior defenseman Drew MacKenzie put a backhander past UNH goalie Casey DeSmith at 1:38 of the extra session to stun the Wildcats, 4-3, in front of 5,233 at the Whittemore Center.

“There's not a whole lot of talking (in the locker room),” said sophomore defenseman Eric Knodel, who scored a goal and had an assist for the Wildcats. “Everybody's pretty disappointed with that loss. We just couldn't finish them off. We had them where we needed to in the third period and couldn't put another one in the net.”

The loss snapped a four-game unbeaten streak for the Wildcats and dropped their overall record to 12-15-3 and mark in Hockey East to 9-12-2.

“That's really disappointing on our part,” said UNH coach Dick Umile. “We gave the game away. We should not have let them back in the game.”

At midweek, the Wildcats talked about wanting some revenge for what happened to them in Burlington back in November.

Instead, the struggling Catamounts shocked them again. Only worse.

Back then, Lenz scored with 1:20 left in regulation and Vermont stole a point from the Wildcats with a 4-4 tie.

On Friday night, the Catamounts snuck away with two points.

The teams meet again at the Whittemore Center tonight at 7 for UNH's last home game of the season and Senior Night.

“We need two points, nothing else,” said sophomore forward Kevin Goumas, who scored a goal at 9:16 of the third period to put UNH up, 3-2. “It's coming down to the wire and it's tight for playoff spots and we definitely need two points.”

UNH remains in seventh place in the Hockey East standings, two points behind sixth-place Providence. The Friars used Merrimack resident Tim Schaller's goal to tie Northeastern, 1-1, on Friday night.

The Wildcats are three points ahead of eighth-place Massachusetts and four ahead of ninth-place Massachusetts. The top eight teams make the playoffs.

The Catamounts bring up the rear with a 6-22-1 overall record, 3-18-1 in Hockey East. They snapped a seven-game losing streak on Friday night.

Down 2-1 since late in the first period, Vermont tied the game at 2-2 on a Michael Paliotta goal at 8:31 of the third period.

Goumas and the Wildcats took just 45 seconds to respond and take the lead back.

But it wasn't enough.

The Wildcats outshot Vermont 12-6 on the way to a 2-1 lead after the first period.

Junior forward Scott Pavelski showed nice patience and beat senior goalie Rob Madore with a shot just under the crossbar on the glove side 7:18 into the game. Kevin McCarey and Knodel assisted.

The Catamounts took just 35 seconds to tie it when defenseman Paliotta's shot toward the net deflected off Lenz and past DeSmith on Vermont's first shot of the game.

UNH took the lead back with a power-play goal with 49.9 seconds left in the period.

The Wildcats worked the puck around the perimeter until Knodel teed up a shot from straight on and beat Madore. Jeff Silengo and Trevor van Riemsdyk assisted.

DeSmith, the freshman from Rochester, finished with 17 saves.

Madore made 30 saves for the win.

Four of UNH's last five losses, all Hockey East games, have come in overtime. Three have been at home.

“Especially in the second half of the season, we've been in this position a lot,” Goumas said. With those overtime losses, there are a lot of points we could be using right now.”
